Craftyhj | 51 comments Hi, I have lately resurrected my teenage love of the Golden Age of Crime and came upon a reference to this group while reading a review of The Case of the Gilded Fly. I am always on the look-out for a new mystery so I am hoping that I will find lots to enjoy here.

I live in the South East of England and as the daughter of a librarian I have been inhaling books since birth!

Hi Craftyhj and welcome to the English Mysteries Club!

Oh yes, Edmund Crispin is a firm favourite with some of us, and we recently had his classic The Moving Toyshop as a group read. I see you are also reading a book by Cyril Hare, so do check out our current group read of An English Murder LINK HERE. It's proving very popular! 😊

Have a browse and join in wherever you like.

Maurice Breslow | 26 comments Hello, everyone. My name's Maurice, I live in Canada (I do know Red Rose tea), and I'm happy to join you in the group. I've always loved English mysteries, ever since I first thrilled to Wilkie Collins's "The Moonstone" as an undergrad. Then Agatha Christie, Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine, Conan Doyle... I look forward to getting to know the members, and to joining in the discussions of the monthly reads. I'm happily into February's "A Nice Class of Corpse."

message 626: by Tiziana (last edited Feb 02, 2023 06:21AM) (new)

Tiziana | 200 comments Hi, my name is Tiziana, I'm 51, born in Vienna and living in Italy.

English is not my mother tongue but I usually read English written book because I have a wider choice and many, too many books are not translated into my language.
... I beg your pardon for any errors in my text :-)

My favorite reads are mysteries, I started reading Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle when I was 11 years old and I never stopped to read mysteries.
I love classic detection, but also modern cozy mysteries with a historical setting (1st and 2nd World War, Victorian, Regency, medieval, 18th century ...), lately I've become passionate about mystery-romances.

I like to switch genres from time to time by reading children's classics, biographies of historical figures and fiction novels with the background of real historical events.
I also really like the stories of art thieves, espionage and adventure.
I hate dramatic love stories and I like happy and humorous ones instead.

Even before books, I have always loved animals, nature and sport.
In my life I have done dance, artistic gymnastics, more than 20 years of martial arts (kung-fu, kick-boxe, wing-chung), swimming, running and fitness.
Now the aches and pains of age limit me a little, but I always try to get moving.
I have had several cats and dogs that I have loved deeply and will always carry in my heart. I now have 3 cats that I adopted last year from a shelter and a little dog who needs a home is coming soon.

I love to draw and do creative works to decorate or use for the home.
I'm single, not by choice but in my life I've never met the kind of man I love in movies and books...probably my standards are too high.
Wishing you all a great day and thank you for letting me participate to the group. :-)

Hi Tiziana and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club". I'm so glad you found us, as we read all the sort of books you like! My first two mystery authors as a young teenager were also Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle! The stood me in good stead. Your English is very good!

I too have a rescue dog - a sort of shepherd dog come husky from Romania - and have had many cats in the past. I love them all very much 😊 I hope your new little one settles soon.

message 628: by Helen (new)

Helen (helenfrominyocounty) | 10 comments Hi Tiziana, and welcome. Your English is excellent. Your aches and pains. .. I can relate.

I'm a fan of historical mysteries; you might like to look into the "Historical Mysteries Lovers" discussion group here on NG. Lots of book choices there.

message 635: by SamSpayedPI (new)

SamSpayedPI | 3 comments Hello all; I'm Stephanie, but you can call me Sam for the purposes of Goodreads. Despite the moniker, I'm much more of a fan of English mysteries than hard-boiled detective fiction.

I disdained mysteries as a child and teen, but caught the bug at university. I read Arthur Conan Doyle, of course, and I was told that the writings of John Dickson Carr were similar to P.G. Wodehouse, so I picked those up, but once I read Dorothy Sayers I was a goner.

I am retired and live in the U.S.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 13 comments Hello fellow British mystery lovers. I am an avid fan of the British mysteries of the Golden Age, and certainly, some of the more recent ones as well. I see that I have several good GR friends who are also members.

I am not a group read kind of person but will become active in the other topics and hope that I can learn about authors I haven't read yet and also contribute my own favorites. I will now go have a hot cup of PG Tips tea and prepare to enjoy myself. The game's afoot!!

message 639: by Helen (new)

Helen (helenfrominyocounty) | 10 comments Welcome, Jill. Also a fan of British mysteries, especially historicals. Lots of them set in the "Golden Age" time frame, so they follow the trope.
