Welcome! Please Introduce Yourself Here

Hi Eryn and welcome to the English Mysteries Club! I'm so glad you found us, and we look forward to seeing you in the current group read, and wherever else you like too! Have fun here 😊

My name is Mihaela and I really love English mystery books and series. There is something special with it.. Agatha Christie was my favorite writer. I also like P D James.
I am curious and excited to find out about the discussions in this group. Looking forward to attending your meetings.

I am presently re-reading a novel by Agatha Christie and I am a fan of PD James!
Hi Mihaela and welcome to the English Mysteries Club! You have picked two great authors there! We've just finished a group read of Agatha Christie's Evil Under the Sun and have had group reads of P.D. James too!
Do have fun exploring the group and join wherever you like 😊

Multumesc mult. Thank you so much, very kind of you.
I really enjoyed P D James's An Unsuitable Job for a Woman with Cordelia Gray investigating. And The Private Patient also.
I'm now considering to read Cover Her Face. Looks like is one of the most appreciated P D James book. Have you read it?

Thank you so much.
Sorry I missed Evil Under The Sun... What book is now to be reading?

Cu placere! Don't hesitate to read Cover Her Face, PD James' first detective story (1962). There we meet a much younger Adam Dalgliesh.
The title comes from a line in The Duchess of Malfi and Other Plays by John Webster. The same line, "Cover her face. Mine eyes dazzle; she died young," is also of importance in Agatha Christie's Sleeping Murder!
I also enjoyed reading An Unsuitable Job for a Woman. There, a novel by Thomas Hardy is mentioned, while The Duchess of Malfi is part of The Skull Beneath the Skin.
PD James, like Agatha Christie, was very knowledgeable in classics!

I'm Mike Horwood, recently joined and a bit slow in saying, 'Hello All'. I'm reading The Zig-Zag Girl at the moment. I used to read a lot of detective fiction: Agatha, of course, and P D James, Ruth Rendell, and a host of others, then I stopped for many years and have just started again. I favour crime fiction where the writer provides all the necessary information to solve the mystery in the course of the narrative, and where facts and the behaviour of the characters are believable.
I write fiction and poetry myself and have just published my own first detective novel: see the Authors' Promotions thread.
Looking forward to reading with you and exchanging views.

Hi, Claudia,
Many thanks for your suggestion, I really appreciate.
Cover Her Face is on my favorite list for sure. Now I am dealing with The Zig Zag Girl.
There is so much to read... And not enough time for this unfortunately. But the good part of commuting for job is that it allows you to read on bus, tube or train.
Wish you a good day.

Hi, Joan,
One of my favorite writers is Edgar Allan Poe. I would love to re-read The Murders in Rue Morgue anytime. And his short stories.. A master of horror fiction definitely

Hi Mike,
I've just been reading your helpful comment on our read of The Zig Zag Girl and wondered why I didn't recognise you ... so here's a proper welcome!
Welcome too to Michael! I hope you both enjoy our group and find lots to join in with here 😊

Thanks, Jackie - looking forward to meeting like-minded readers/writers.

Hi Michael, nice to e-meet you. I lived 'on-and-off' in the South of France for 5 years recently and I have drawn on that experience to include Cannes and St Tropez in my latest mystery thriller set in the 1950's. My protagonist sails aboard a classic sailing yacht that also appears in 'And God Created Woman' starring Bridget Bardot (who is still alive and living in StTrop.) Do you live anywhere near there?
Hi Colm, and welcome to the "English Mysteries group"! It's interesting to hear you worked in the publishing business, and great to have another England-based member!
We are focused on reading, and have a group read each month alternating between more contemporary and golden age English mysteries. I do hope you will be able to join in some of these. There are also many more folders where we discuss various authors.
As a courtesy to our members who additionally write, we do have a "promotions" folder (which I know you have already discovered). There's a beta readers thread too in that folder. You are welcome to share about your writing there - and let me know if you'd like a writing tips thread, perhaps - but not anywhere else, thanks!

And welcome Lady! Somehow I missed your post - I am sorry! We are very glad to have you with us, and I look forward to chatting with you.😊

I'm in Glasgow, Scotland. Thank you for letting me join your group. I'm now reading every night. The TV went out the window (not literally - I'm not strong enough for that). The library here is free to join - yippee. I'm trying to read travel, history, historical fiction and thrillers - I'm hoping to find fact-based thrillers/suspense.
Also, please be my friend. I have a room, unfortunately, in a very rough neighbourhood and socialising is no longer in the day-planner.

😆 Hi Bianca, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club"! I hope you like it here, and find plenty to join in with.
You might like our current read of The Zig Zag Girl by Elly Griffiths LINK HERE
It's not fact based, but I'm finding the setting of Brighton in the 1950s really convincing, and the magic/conjuring side is really quirky. Then next month (soon!) we begin a golden age mystery, which is said to be very good!
I'm happy to send you a friend request 😊

I'm a student from Britain. I've never been overseas and I'm wanting to read about life at all points of the compass.
Hi Mandy, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club"! I'm from Britain too, and live in England, where all the mysteries we read in this group were written, both golden age and modern. I hope you enjoy your time here with us. 😊

Thank you for making me welcome. I'm flitting between books just now: wanting to read of other countries but, deep-down hankering for a good mystery/thriller/ suspense. As bedtime reading, I find those books exactly what is needed.
Ah, then be sure to check out our current group reads 😊 We change the book each month, to make sure we have a good variety!

I'm a surveyor, I own a sea kayak, live within a stone's throw of the briny and luckily work in coastal surveying.
I yearn for fiction that asks me think: join-the-dots, figure what is happening, where the plot is taking me.
Hi Mark, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club"! And Goodreads too. You're definitely in the right place for puzzles in your reading, so I hope you like it here.
I'd love to be in my caravan on the Dorset coast right now, but the all year round you must experience some squally weather ... great to have a job in that field though 😊

At present I'm, unfortunately, marooned in a big city of Scotland. Where I'm living, it's not safe in the evenings. I will head south as soon as I can but, for now reading is what I'm at. It would be good to make friends.
Hi Jenny, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club". I'm glad you found us. We are a very friendly bunch here, so have a browse and join in wherever you like 😊
