Abigail Tattersfield | 1 comments Hi! I’ve only just found this so apologies if the thread is slightly dead/im late to the game.
My name is Abi and I live in the south of England, although I am from the midlands originally and have spent a good amount of time in Wales.
I live with my partner and my golden retriever (Rupert) who we love to pieces. I used to horse ride a lot and work on a farm. I have a HUGE soft spot for animals.
I’ve always been a big reader, but after some burn out at uni, I have only just started getting back into reading for fun. I have fallen back in love with british crime novels, especially the classics like the Marple mysteries.
I have discovered a few new authors and have been exploring different titles from across the sub-genres and writing styles!

Hi Abi and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club"! I'm English too, and love big dogs - we currently have a (mostly) Romanian sheepdog. I hope you like it here and look forward to getting to know you. You're definitely in the right place if you like the Miss Marple mysteries! 😊

Rebecca | 12 comments Hello, my name is Rebecca. I’m an avid reader, especially of UK detective books. I am looking forward to discovering new authors and books.

Hi Rosemarie!
Thank you for the welcome! I appreciate it.

Rebecca | 12 comments Sorry Rosemarie! Somehow I managed to mess that up. Thank you for the welcome.

message 815: by Tina (new)

Tina | 1 comments Hi, I'm Tina,

I love distance running (I'm quick but need to be quicker) and reading when I'm resting.
I'm not into fantasy, sci-fi and the outlandish, I'm finding my way around the real world. Good, fact-based, fiction is not off the table.

message 816: by Hazel (new)

Hazel | 1 comments Hi Everyone, I'm Hazel. If I'm not working (in a water sports centre), I'm on the water, or in the water, (unintentionally a lot of the time) or reading. They're a strange lot, the on the water set. You can get soaked through on a water ski, yet should you fall in, the first thing asked when you come ashore is, "Get wet, then?"
My favourite books are thrillers that make good sense and books that I can learn from.

message 817: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 382 comments Hi, Tina and Hazel! Welcome to the group!

message 818: by Ellie (new)

Ellie | 1 comments I'm Ellie, a nurse and I work in a care home for the elderly. Fortunately for me, I have a room - I'm usually on call - and so, food is cooked for me, I have no need to commute and I've little interest in the television and Bedford's main library is a fifteen-minute walk from my work.

I read: Thrillers, Thrillers, Thrillers, and also, Thrillers.

Hi Ellie. You seem to have the perfect place for an avid reader. Our library used to be closer to the other side of town. A few years ago, it moved into a new building just down the road from me. I’ve been in heaven ever since. It’s good to meet you.

Joe Turcotte | 6 comments Hi! My name is Joe, and I'm an avid fan of all kinds of mysteries. I just finished a Sherlock Holmes marathon and thoroughly enjoyed Doyle's whole collection. I'd like to get into Agatha Christie's works next (although The Brothers Karamazov on my bookshelf has been tempting me for some time). Nice to meet you all!

message 824: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 382 comments Hi, Joe. Welcome to the group!
The Brothers Karamazov is an amazing book, but you can always read a mystery if you need a break from it.
That's what I read when I want a fast fun read-I pick a vintage mystery.

message 825: by Werner (new)

Werner | 257 comments Joe, I echo Rosemarie's welcome!

Interestingly, one plot strand in The Brothers Karamazov actually does deal with a murder mystery. Some readers and critics think of it as an early example of the mystery genre (although I personally think of it as general fiction that has mystery elements).

Hi Joe and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club"! I hope you enjoy it here, and find lots to join in with. 😊

Your choice of English mysteries is core to our reading; we have a golden age or classic mystery once every other month as a group read, alternating with a more modern one.

message 828: by Neer (new)

Neer Hello everybody. I love mysteries and so am glad to have discovered this group. My favourite era of mysteries is The Golden Age and Anthony Gilbert is my favourite of all writers of that time. Looking forward to the discussions.

John Hardy | 5 comments Hi, I'm from Brisbane, Australia, retired. I read a lot of English mysteries. Started with Conan Doyle, then Agatha Christie, then whatever I could find in the library.
I don't like some of the modern books, especially if there is excessive violence, or they are too dark.

Hi John and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club"! Your reading is core to our group, so I think you'll find it just your cup of tea. I hope so anyway. Just join in wherever you like, and have fun 😊

message 833: by Wanda (new)

Wanda Pedersen | 5 comments Hello! A Canadian reader here. I've enjoyed Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, and Dorothy L. Sayers. I also greatly enjoy Richard Osman's Thurday Murder Club books and Mick Herron's Slough House series. When not reading mysteries, I also consume a lot of fantasy and science fiction, so I am a dedicated genre fiction reader. 😊

Robert | 1 comments New member here. I tripped across the group while reading goodreads comments on An English Murder, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Former English major and psychologist. I listen to books rather than read the print versions, because i'm constantly using my eyes on the computer for other things. I look forward to joining in discussions of whichever books i can find on audio. Glad there is such a discussion group.
