Is he known internationally or not? This is "Simons Cat" - a popular cartoon here, with short animations too. This is the moment before ... 😃

Dan Cogan | 2 comments Hi, I'm Dan Cogan, a new member of both Goodreads and this group. I don't know how much I should say about myself. I'm an author as well as various other things, some of which I'm proud of, others... not so much.

I fell in love with the English mystery genre round about the turn of the Millennium, when I chanced upon a copy of an old book called My Foe Outstretch'D Beneath The Tree by V. C. Clinton-Baddeley. The title led me interestingly to the poetry of William Blake, which I had never read, but heard about from my more "literary-minded" older sister.

And that in turn led me to Agatha Christie's Endless Night (also taking it's title from a line in a Blake poem) which despite its authorship was not really a mystery - at least not to me (I figured out by the second page who would be killed and who had "done" it).

Anyway that's how I got started on English mysteries. I wouldn't call it my favourite genre. Let's just say that it's one of my favourites.

Hi Dan, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club".

What an intriguing introduction - and it's high time we had something by V.C. Clinton-Baddeley as a group read. Maybe when we next collect nominations for our golden mystery read you can suggest one? That will be in about a month's time. At the moment we are nominating for a more modern mystery, LINK HERE if you would like to join in (but not your own - sorry - but all the best with them!)

I hope you like it here, and please join in wherever you like.

Catherine (catjackson) | 5 comments Hi everyone. I'm glad I found this group as I love all sorts of English Mysteries. In college (many years ago) I read through the entire Miss Silver series to escape after a lot of studying. I'm new to this group, but have been a Goodreads member for a long time.

message 861: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 382 comments Welcome to the group, Catherine. I discovered the Miss Silver mysteries a couple of years ago thanks to goodreads. They're fun!

Hi Catherine, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club".

Have you spotted that we're reading a Miss Silver book at the moment? (Perhaps that's what attracted you!) Anyway do join in if you like LINK HERE

and any other threads you fancy as well. I hope you like it here 😊

Yes, that was one of the things that initially grabbed my attention. The library list is one of the other reasons I joined. And, that you still have set group reads.

Oh yes Catherine, a new one every month, and we alternate between the golden age and something a bit more recent. 😊

message 866: by Holly (new)

Holly Anne | 5 comments I am Holly from US/UK (london but American) I love Golden Age of Crime, really any book 1915-1965. I have read a lot of them and keep getting sucked into getting more from the British Library collection which were out of print but they republished that are often not that great, but I love them anyway.

message 870: by Vic (new)

Vic Lauterbach | 2 comments I'm Vic Lauterbach and almost all the fiction I read falls into the mystery category. (About half of my reading is non-fiction.) I favor police procedurals, but I'll try any title that seems worthwhile. I avoid mysteries with serial killers (now a cliché), heavy psychological elements, supernatural, or science fiction elements. Basically, I lean toward books that adhere to rules of the Detection Club (1930). I am working my way through the British Crime Classics series.

Our next group read will be a golden age mystery, so do feel free to nominate one you'd like to read with us during March, if you like! LINK HERE

Rashi | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm discovering this group in 2025 and it feels as if I've found my commune. I grew up reading Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes, the Father Brown mysteries and others and I've always been on the lookout for similar book series.
I'm so excited to discover more titles and have amazing discussions with all the wonderful readers here.

James, and Sherlock Holmes (I'm an author of Holmes pastiche stories). I also enjoy other mysteries, but English Mysteries are my favorite. Looking forward to participating in the group.

As every month comes there are fewer and fewer pennies in my pocket: I’ve only myself to blame, I voted…….. Staying in is actually more enjoyable than I first thought: books, books, and more books appeals.

Please friend me.

Helen James | 1 comments Hi everyone. I'm Helen from the small and sunny island of Bermuda - we're a British Colony, not part of the Caribbean, and located about 700 miles off the coast of North Carolina. I'm an avid reader - Agatha Christie is one of my all-time favourite reads so this group felt like the perfect home for me! I have 2 grown-up kids and a jack russell, Harvey, who keeps me company now I'm an empty nester. Looking forward to getting to know the group and thanks for having me.

Helen

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) | 17 comments Hi Jean, and everyone. I hope my first sentence here was not a grammatical mistake.

Anyway I like many things English, American, and Japanese. I also tend to read Russian literature etc in French. I don't like native French Literature for reasons I won't go into here, but I like the language itself.

I have seen Richard Osman twice in Would I Lie To You. He is very smart. Anyone who shuts Lee Mack up is a winner in my book.

Hi Nic, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club". I'm so sorry I didn't see your post before now!

It's great to have another English member - and I love your country! We spent just 3 weeks touring both islands about 25 years ago (gosh - that was a shock to work out!) and would happily have emigrated if it hadn't been for all our animals.

I hope you like it here, and find plenty of ideas!

Sierra M King | 1 comments Hi everyone
I'm from Dublin and have just finished writing my first book Seal of Love. The story is set mostly in Scotland on the Isle of Mull. Brian and Eilish meet on a dating app in florida and then travel to Scotland to meet Brian's mum. And that's where the capers begin with Brian disappearing, politics, witches and close friends.

Hi Sierra, and welcome to the group! I hope you like it here, and do join in with some of our group reads and so on.

We have friends who moved to Mull, so stayed there a few times. It's a beautiful island for sure, and we loved visiting Iona and the other uninhabited islands offshore, such as Lungha with its wonderful bird life, and watching puffins - and looking at the extraordinary geology of Staffa and Fingal's Cave from the boat. Great place to set your novel.

We also had a holiday in Dublin many years ago, and what comes back to me from that are the friendly pubs (though I don't drink!) and the stunning calm of Glendalough. What a lovely place to live!
