Thanks Rita. I have a hold on The Moving Toyshop. I am second in line. If I get it by April, I will join in.

Susan | 606 comments Debra, it's a good way to get your feet wet. When I was first in this group years ago, Jean and I did a buddy read of Inspector Morse mysteries and I was hooked.

I loved that extended buddy read :) I ended up reviewing all the Inspector Morse novels!

message 155: by Barbara K (new)

Barbara K Oooo... Wish I'd been part of the Morse buddy read. During the course of 3 full house moves in 5 years I had to let go of many of my old paperbacks, but I clung to the Morses. :-)

Thanks Susan. I am now next in line to get The Moving Toyshop, so I should be able to join the buddy read. And I will look into the Inspector Morse mysteries.

There's no reason why we can't do something similar, Barbara, if you get two others interested in the Buddy Reads Requests thread :)

Have you still got your Morse-keteers' cape Leslie? ;)

message 160: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 1664 comments ;) I wish now that I had bought the books instead of borrowing them from the library. Not that I need more books...

message 161: by Susan (new)

Susan | 606 comments I'd like to do it again, Jean, if you can think of someone besides Morse. I found it an incredibly satisfying experience.

Hi Susan - Well it looks like we might be revving up for an ongoing marathon read of Dorothy L. Sayers's novels ... and maybe Agatha Christie's too, if you fancy either of those :)

I'm loath to start too many projects off at once; building slowly and steadily seems to work best. But it would certainly be good to bear it in mind and maybe discuss with others in the buddy reads thread?

message 163: by Barbara K (new)

Barbara K Sayers sounds good to me as well. Unfortunately I haven’t held on to my Peter Wimsey paperbacks but that won’t stand in the way of my participating.

Has anyone else joined "English Mysteries" recently? Or been in the group for a while, and would like to make contact?

message 165: by Delia (new)

Delia Hi, my name is Delia. I enjoy mysteries, Agatha Christie and Elizabeth George are a couple I have enjoyed. Although some of Elizabeth George is too disturbing for me to read in the evenings. I also love JK Rowling’s Strike series and an awaiting the next one to come out! Looking forward to reading with the group!

GeraniumCat Hi, I'm Jodie, and I live on the English-Scottish Border. Lots of people here have mentioned authors I love - Golden Age ones in particular but also some more recent writers (I'm slightly disappointed that Catriona McPherson's excellent Dandy Gilver series doesn't meet the criteria, as it's set in Scotland). I'm not keen on grisly, but am a bit of a stickler when it comes to historical accuracy or American English when it ought to be English English, so be warned, I am likely to rant (but politely, of course, because I AM English)...

France-Andrée (iphigenie72) | 386 comments Hi,

I’m from Quebec, Canada and I’ve never been to the UK and yet... I’ve been there since I was a kid, first with Agatha Christie and then with other authors, but nobody equals Poirot for me.

And Jean, I’m so glad to hear from someone who has the same favorite author as me! I always get weird look when I say Charles Dickens is my top one especially here, I think. Thank you for the relaunch.

I live with my two cats Pertwee and Kai, work for a communication union and am in my late 40s.

message 176: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 382 comments Hi, France-Andrée! Welcome to the group. I have never been to the U. K. either, except in books. I live in Toronto, so we're neighbours.

message 177: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 262 comments Welcome France-Andrée! Agatha Christie is exceptional, though I´ve already been to the UK in reality too! ;) Have fun here!

Hi France-Andrée, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club". YAY, another Dickens fan. He is the only author who can make me laugh uproariously, and then make me cry, sometimes within just a couple of minutes :)

Lots of us here love Poirot too, and we have a special thread for Agatha Christie. I'm sure if you browse through you'll find lots to join in with, so have fun!

And I do love your avatar :)

message 179: by France-Andrée (new)

France-Andrée (iphigenie72) | 386 comments Don’t know how to quote from the ipod.

But my avatar is my left arm tattoo and the name of my cat gives away who’s my favorite!

message 180: by France-Andrée (new)

France-Andrée (iphigenie72) | 386 comments The name of my cat (Pertwee) and sorry I also don’t know about editing and the cat so named was being sick in the bed so the last comment went awry.

Sorry for being off topic.

message 183: by Werner (new)

Werner | 257 comments Hello, all! I'm Werner, age 67, a librarian at Bluefield College (a Baptist college in the mountains of southwestern Virginia), and an avid reader who's been on Goodreads since Feb. 2008. More to the point for this group, I've been a fan of British (and American) mysteries since I was a grade-school kid, having been introduced to the genre by reading some of Doyle's and Christie's works. (My customized Mystery-Crime Fiction shelf is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list... .) Jean and I are long-standing Goodreads friends, and she encouraged me to join this group; but truthfully, I didn't need much encouragement. :-)

Because I already have so doggone many books on my own to-read shelf, and get so little time to read, I probably won't join in many of the group reads, if any. But I do hope to contribute to some of the discussion threads!

Hey Werner, it's lovely to see you here in the "English Mysteries Club" - welcome! You may find several mutual friends here already, which is always nice.

Your mystery reading sounds well-grounded, with those authors, so I have high hopes that you'll find lots here to interest you. Any group or buddy reads are optional, so no need to worry there.

Also, many of us may find our reading plans thwarted, when public libraries are closed for the time being. I should think our to-read shelves of books we own may steadily reduce ... maybe that's a good thing!

Enjoy the group and have fun!

message 185: by Werner (new)

Werner | 257 comments Thanks, Jean. Will do! :-)

message 186: by Susan (new)

Susan | 606 comments Hi Werner,
It's great that you joined us. You might want to consider doing one group or buddy read a month. The discussions are fun and it's such a good way to find new authors who might appeal to you. I have found some of my favorite authors that way.

message 187: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 262 comments Good to see you here too Werner! Hope you´ll sometimes find time to join in!

message 188: by Werner (new)

Werner | 257 comments Thanks, Susan, Rita, and Michaela!

Unless they're short books, I generally only get time to read a couple of books in a month. Then too, I usually take part in four annual group reads in groups where I'm a moderator and feel an obligation to participate; and in another group, this is the first year in which I've been asked to take on responsibility for a 3x a year common read. Adding in an annual challenge in another group, occasional review copies and things I want to read on my own, my reading plate is pretty full! That said, I might join in a read here sometime. Who knows what the future holds? :-)

message 192: by PattyMacDotComma (last edited Mar 28, 2020 07:01PM) (new)

PattyMacDotComma I'm here! I read mysteries but may have to be pulled into line now and then if I talk about one that isn't English. I expect there must be guidelines here somewhere that I haven't read yet, but I'll go check out the homepage now. :)

I should mention I'm in Australia and read mysteries from all over the world.

Hi Patty! I'm so pleased you joined this group :) LOL, no "pulling into line" here, although our focus is definitely on the English style. When I rewrote the group's blurb, I tried to reflect what members read and discuss.

We do have folders for other countries though, and one thread may particularly interest you; in fact it's ready and waiting for your first-hand input :)

Just have fun in the group!

Hi Jack, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club". I hope you find lots to join in with here.

I am English myself but fortunately know a little American slang, so although I did a double take at "doxie lover", I then realised you were talking about dachshunds. We call them "sausage dogs", which is a little disrespectful, but then just google "doxie meaning in English" and you'll see why an English person was quite so shocked! LOL!

Happy reading :)
