Iza Brekilien (izabrekilien) Hello, I'm Iza from France - I live in Burgundy, work in Paris, dream of moving back to my dear Brittany in the future.
Thanks to my sister who loves it too, I grew up reading British literature. When a teenager, I read all the novels Agatha Christie wrote, I also have a deep fondness for Arthur Conan Doyle in general and Sherlock Holmes in particular.
I recently started reading Ann Granger's Lizzie Martin novels and am currently reading The haunted hotel by Wilkie Collins (so far, it's more a gothic story than a mystery).
I'll be happy to share my love for British mystery novels with you :)
PS : Oh, I almost forgot, I'm a librarian, by the way.

Christina B | 4 comments Iza I liked your introduction so much! Iza sorry to be ignorant, is there a French mystery tradition similar to the Golden Age in England and if so, any recommendations? Introducing myself since Iza inspired me not to be shy: I'm American (Maryland), writer for a teachers/nurses union that represents some librarians (yay librarians! People do not understand how much you do to hold schools and communities together). Big fan of Arthur Conan Doyle, Christie, Sayers, Allingham, Tey, some of Ngaio Marsh, Patricia Wentworth. Would love any suggestions along those lines!

Hi Iza and Christina, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club". I'm so pleased you introduced yourselves here, and hope you find lots to join in with. With those favourite authors, I'm sure you will :) So just look through the threads, have fun. Happy English Mystery reading to you both :)

Iza Brekilien (izabrekilien) Thank you Christina and Bionic Jean !
The first "golden age" French writers that come to my mind are Maurice Leblanc (Arsène Lupin is his main character, I read all his books when I was a teenager), Gaston Leroux (the journalist Rouletabille), Emile Gaboriau. I'll look for other names if you want ;)

message 309: by Christina (new)

Christina B | 4 comments Thanks Iza! I've heard of Arsene Lupin, maybe I'll start with Leblanc, I really appreciate the recommendations!

Iza Brekilien (izabrekilien) Thanks Michaela :) Very different "régions", but both are full of historical references. When I moved to Burgundy, I found out it was full of serial killers, lol !

Can I add Simenon's Maigret? I think they qualify, in that they're so delightfully, ponderously French (although written by a Belgian), and yet have been adapted so often for the English market (most recently a series with Rowan Atkinson in the title role) that they almost count as English mysteries.

...almost forgot the point of this thread. I'm Phillip and I joined this group when I only recently discovered An English Murder by Cyril Hare and realised how little I know. Geographically, I also form a portion of the French contingent, and I write to you now from Paris.

First of all welcome P.J., and I hope you enjoy the "English Mysteries Club".

I'm sure many members here enjoy the Maigret mysteries :) Do you know, I had always assumed they were written in French, but since Georges Simenon is Belgian, as you say, I'm now wondering if they were written in Flemish.

Just let me know if you' like a thread devoted to French, Belgian and Dutch authors who write in the English style. Otherwise we have our "authors in translation" thread :)

I appreciate the opportunity to clarify - Simenon was indeed of the French-speaking variety of Belgian, and may well be the most prolific writer in the language, certainly during the twentieth century.

Eric Larrey | 8 comments Dear all,
I am a French writer and reader, passionate about history, especially the XIXth century. Hercule Poirot and Sherlokc Holmes were my first favorite characters, creating a special link with british mysteries.
I have a more than 30 years career in research and technology innvovation, an other link to XIXth century where so many techniques have born.
Mixing all of that, I went to writing. I am publishing in France my third novel involving one of the most famous british detective, I mean Sherlock Holmes. I tried, with all humility, to keep the Conan Doyle style.
The first novel has just been translated.

Glad to read your posts and to share our passion.

All the best for you

Eric

Monique Boodram (moniqueboodram) Hullo everyone!
I'm a US student and blogger interested in Sir Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories (currently attempting a thorough reread of the collection). Aside from that, I try to learn from the experts and write my own stories as well (but my drafts usually end up in the trash...work in progress...)
Also on the agenda: finding new reads and book pals.
I am so excited to meet and share my interests with you! Cheers!
~Monique

Hi Sam, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club". You've been rereading some great authors! I hope you find lot of threads to join in with, and plenty of recommendations from our readers. Just scroll through and have fun :)

message 331: by Mary (new)

Mary Pagones I'm so happy to find such a lively, active group on Goodreads!

Sherlock Holmes has been my passion since age eleven, and I am always rereading the canon. I have an embarrassingly in-depth knowledge of all the Holmes stories and novels, and more opinions on them than is probably healthy!

Victorian sensationalist fiction has been my other love for just as long as Holmes, including Wilkie Collins, the Bronte sisters, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and anything creepy and gaslit. I'm also a great fan of Agatha Christie, particularly the Poirots. I also love the adaptations of both Holmes and Christie.

Hi Mary, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club". I could repeat your post as being true for me too :) Lots of us here love those authors, and this month should be a great one for you. Our monthly group read is Hercule Poirot's Christmas, and I'm sure Adrian will be happy to welcome you to his ongoing buddy read of all the Sherlock Holmes stories, especially if you are also an expert. Hopefully you'll have lots to discuss :)

Please take a look at our author folders, and other threads, and jump in wherever you like!

Have you watched the crime series "Whitechapel" on TV? It is set in the part of London where Jack the Ripper killed his victims but in the present day. It can be quite creepy.

message 348: by Phillip E Maynard (new)

Phillip E Maynard | 6 comments Hello everyone! My name is Phil and love to read all sorts of things, but my favorite is the English mystery genre. I grew up reading and rereading Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, Wilkie Collins, and Agatha Christie. Over the years I developed such a love for the English mystery writers that I even limit my television watching to Britbox and Acorn lol. I enjoy Colin Dexter’s Morse novels as well as Caroline Graham’s Barnaby. I live in a small town here in central Ohio called Delaware, in a lot of ways it reminds me of some of the quaint little villages and towns in my English mysteries. I’m definitely a UK wanna be, there’s just nothing better than my pipe, a cup of Yorkshire tea and a good, page turner of a mystery by the fire. Looking forward to learning, reading and sharing with fellow fans.
