All things, I love about the series, as well & as for the latter, I have suggestions regarding "the mask threatening," as those kinda people have other issues that would distract them long enough - to get away! 🙄

Drz | 17 comments I thought this book was for the fans of this series. I am a huge fan of the series and have read all of the books at least once. Having said that I do have some that are my favorites. They tend to be the ones more focused on the personal relationships then the case itself. I loved this book as it showed the progress of the characters and the relationships so well. This is definitely not a book for someone new to the series as I can't see how they would like or appreciate it.

I agree, DRZ. It would be difficult for first time readers to appreciate the nuances in the character development.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments I agree. I believe some of the books in the series can be read as a standalone, most, like this one, builds on the previous books. The characters have changed so much, it is important to know their past.

ElectricOutcast (electicoutcast) | 639 comments Getting back on topic...am I the only one who was scared shitless at Eve finding the dead cat?

Seth - You are not alone...actually, you may be in great company.
And I gotta say I was holding my breath on the plane ride...I've never heard of a "drop" landing.

I loved the book, and agree with so many of the comments that it was wonderful to see the 'characters' as much as we did.
It's turning out to be one of my favorites. MDy

Barbara "Cookie" Serfaty Williams (goodreadscomcookiew1801) | 1573 comments I was not scare but I was p### off, I am animal lover and do not like hearing about someone hurting one. I know it was not She's cat because he is not a outdoor cat.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments You are not alone. I wasn't sure how he could get to Galahad, but the message was clear. It took me a few paragraphs to relax though. I have cats and dogs of my own.

Actually, I think Blade Runner may have done that first but I don't know

Oh, I hated what he did to that poor cat. It was even worse when we met the women giving him foster care.

What do you think about the team allowing Roarke to fight it out with Lorcan? Were you surprised Whitney let that happen?

The very personal rivalry and antagonism between Roarke and Lorcan, reminded me of the rivalry between Batman and The Joker. If there's one thing about Lorcan and The Joker, they do not give a shit about who they kill or what lives they ruin, they only do it for the fun of it.

Roarke and Batman, the similarities I find with those two is that both of them were motivated by death. Roarke with his mother and adoptive sister, Bruce Wayne with the death of his parents. Roarke obviously has killed in revenge for the death of Marlena and there used to be a time where Batman killed his villains in the early comics. But as time goes on, both Roarke and Batman have a don't-kill code that they adopted through various circumstances.

Roarke and Lorcan fighting each other was the result of Roarke wanting to deliver revenge for not only Lorcan ratting him to Patrick and almost killing him, but him even thinking about killing his wife, his father-figure, and his cat. He lost his temper but was obviously sane enough to make it your run of the mill street fight.

But one thing I think was missing at the tail end was an opportunity was missed to let Lorcan finally understand that Roarke doesn't hide behind cops, especially Eve, he's instead part of a group of warriors who fight for justice. Justice that was initially robbed from him when he lost his mother and Marlena. Because let's face it, Eve and Roarke are warriors for justice and Roarke has obviously won over the hearts of Eve's squad, making him as much a part of the badge as they are (if it makes any sense.)

Finally, I would like to comment on Whitney stepping back, but I really don't have anything to offer right now, but someone else will.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments This was Eve giving Roarke his Oberman moment. He needed to deal Lorcan personally. He didn't to put his hands on him and make him pay for his deals with Patrick Roarke. I don't think it was the ratting him out as much as Lorcan knowing and bonding with Patrick Roarke on killing Roarke's mother.

Roarke deals with people going after Eve often. I don't think that would make Eve step back.

I think Roarke needed to close the chapter on this part of his life. It didn’t seem so much about his bonding with Patrick but how he went about doing it in such a cowardly way. He took the one thing that meant something to him at that time, his copy of Yeats, and used that to almost get him killed, just to make points with Patrick. And, he went after Roarke’s family. Beating him in a man-to-man fight was his way of showing him he hadn’t won anything at all and now Roarke’s done with it.

Whitney let Roarke do what he wanted to do himself but couldn’t. He was managing his own demons from the murders he handled with Feeney that haunted him. Roarke going at Lorcan exorcised demons for many in that crowd, especially Whitney.

It was an extraordinary moment.

Thanks for doing this comparison, Seth. I can indeed see some parallels between Roarke and Batman/Bruce Wayne! It’s a bit harder with Lorcan/Joker as there was nothing charming about the Joker and Lorcan was a chameleon. However, they shared so many other characteristics.

Good analysis Jonetta

ElectricOutcast (electicoutcast) | 639 comments Have any of you noticed how many heads Eve turned by getting out of left field ideas.

Example: being the one to suggest an auto search so she and Roarke could sleep?

Or how about her actually dealing down a sentence on the jealous husband?

ElectricOutcast (electicoutcast) | 639 comments I've officially come to the conclusion that Jenkinson is the John Munch (Homicide: Life On The Street, SVU) of ugly neckties.

Thanks, Lynne!

Seth, that’s a fun thought.

I do understand the Oberman reference, but I think the more accurate character reference I'd use personally is Juliana Dunne from Reunion.
