Cheryl | 1168 comments I have a suggestion: The Forever War by Joe Haldeman (published in 1974) It’s SF that won alot of awards.

On the list!

Cheryl | 1168 comments I ran across this book while perusing my library's online catalog, and thought I'd mention it here:

Naked Came the Stranger by Penelope Ashe

Here's the Wikipedia page link:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_C...

It's a trash novel written in the 1960s by a group of talented writers, purposely written poorly to show that sex sells and the public will buy trashy books. I don't know how entertaining it is, so I hesitate to nominate it. It's probably kind of hard to find, although Amazon has it for Kindle for $11.99. I just thought this group might be interested to hear about it.

Sarah's library has it as an ebook and while mine does not, it is available with a free trial of scribd. So it's doable if you wanna give it a try Cheryl! Not sure what other folks' libraries have in stock though.

For some reason, I didn't get a notification for this post. I just saw it now, as I went to the group page. Buggy Goodreads!

I will leave it up to you, Adelaide, about whether to add Naked Came the Stranger to the nomination list or not. I was also able to find it on Internet Archive for free, but you have to log in and read it on that webpage, no downloads (You can make a free account by clicking on Sign Up in the upper right corner and then be able to create bookmarks as you read.) Here is the link for the book: https://archive.org/details/nakedcame...

I really don't know if it's worth reading (in a fun way), or just a literary curiosity. I'll be ok with whatever you decide.

message 59: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1168 comments OK, here is a book nomination that's probably easier to find:

Tom's Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce

It's an award-winning children's book from 1958 about time travel. It looks interesting and has a good rating on Goodreads.

Putting it on the list!

Cheryl | 1168 comments I got a notification for this thread saying Jay posted here 14 minutes ago. However, I don't see the post here. I hope there isn't a bug with posting.

Jay, if you did post perhaps you can re-post it so that it shows up like it should.

Cheryl | 1168 comments Some suggestions:

Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock (1984)

Lace by Shirley Conran (1982)

Faerie Tale by Raymond E. Feist (1988)

China Mountain Zhang by Maureen F. McHugh (1992)

THANKS CHERYI!

message 64: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 199 comments not sure if I, or anyone, suggested these.

Naked in Death - J. D. Robb, aka Nora Robert's. One of my all time favorite series. 1st book published 1995, romance/murder mystery genre. And for the love of all things holy, do yourself the incredible favor of getting the audio book. Susan Ericksen makes the book come to life, and her voices for the characters are perfect.

Moonheart - Charles de Lint. You love Peter S Beagle? De Lint is just as good. And he throws in Native American and Romani beliefs, as well as English traditions. He has novels and short story collections, can't go wrong with any of them.

Thanks Kelly!

message 66: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1168 comments I wasn't sure where to post this info, so I'm posting it here. You may or may not want to add it to the list of nominations.

Benighted by J. P. Priestly can now be found at Project Gutenberg. Here's the link:

https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/73673

This book is a gothic mystery and was made into the 1932 film The Old Dark House, with Boris Karlof. The film can be found for free on YouTube and is a favorite of mine.

Cheryl | 1168 comments Adelaide wrote: "This looks great Cheryl!"

The movie has long been a favorite of my brother and I. It’s very creepy, but also has some funny bits with eccentric characters who live in the old dark house. I hope the book is good, too.

message 69: by Cheryl (last edited Jun 26, 2024 03:48PM) (new)

Cheryl | 1168 comments Some possible book nominations:

- Replay by Ken Grimwood
(1980) Science Fiction
- The Drowned World by J. G. Ballard
(1962) Science Fiction

message 70: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1168 comments One more:

Summer of Night by Dan Simmons
(1991) Horror

Will you be posting the message threads for the November book? I know you are probably busy, so I don't want to rush you.

message 73: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1168 comments Two nominations:

- Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor
(1944) Historical Fiction/Romance

- When Gravity Fails by George Alec Effinger
(1986) Science Fiction

Kelly | 199 comments So, it's a lot early, but for a Halloween read, how about The Dracula Tape by Fred Saberhagen? Dracula is a seasonal classic during this time, so let's hear about the events from the OTHER party? lol

I am adding some more books to read and was going to add Forever Amber until I realized it was 900+ pages. My brain is having a hard time holding on to any books right now. I'm gonna save this until next winter.

message 80: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1168 comments Adelaide,

You don’t have to select Forever Amber at all, if you don’t want to. I know it’s long, and not everyone likes a long book.

message 81: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1168 comments Looking at the future reads, I cannot find the Noh Mask Muder at my library, nor on Internet Archive. My library does have The Tatto Murder Case and The Informer by this author. I might read one of those, instead, to get a feel for the author's writing.

message 82: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1314 comments Mod
My library has the informer, so I'll switch to that!

message 83: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1314 comments Mod
Sarah's library doesn't have The Informer. I'm just gonna add The Informer to the Noh Mask, and folks can read whichever one they want.

Good idea! I may or may not like the Noh Mask, so I don't want to buy it. Buy if I really like The Informer and the author's writing, I might change my mind. Either way, it's a chance to sample this author's writing.

Kelly | 199 comments (looks at the upcoming books and does happy dance!) I'm really looking forward to some of these. June's author I haven't ever read, so this will be interesting. And a Cadfael book in my birthday month! I loved that tv series so can't wait to dive into the books. :) I'll even think about giving the Danielle Steel one. Really not my kind of book, but what the hey, the rest of the ones look to be very interesting :)

message 86: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1314 comments Mod
I've never read a Danielle Steel book, but we've been pleasantly surprised by an author before. This club is a lot about discovery. If it doesn't work out, then no biggie.

message 87: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1168 comments Adelaide,

Could you please list the stories found in the December upcoming book The Open Door and Other Stories of the Seen and Unseen by Mrs. Oliphant? I can't find this book in my library or online for free. Maybe I'll have luck by looking for the individual stories online.

Ok, going on Amazon I found a reading sample of the book which includes the list of stories. They are:

The Secret Chamber
Earthbound
The Open Door
The Portrait
Dies Irae
The Library Window

All of these stories can be found free online as stand alones. I found them all on Internet Archive, most of which are downloadable.

I figured that we would all read the Open Door and that the other stories would be optional. December is a busy month for a lot of people. In the UK there is a tradition of ghost stories around the holidays. We shall be British for a month. Or British adjacent.

Cheryl | 1168 comments I would like to nominate a children’s book:

Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt (1975)

It’s been a while since the group read a children’s book, and this one looked interesting.

Cheryl | 1168 comments I would like to nomnate a Western:

God's Country by Percival Everett (1994)

This was originally published in 1994 and then re-released in 2024, after the popularity of the author’s book James.
