This is an unusually book in that it combines prose and poetry, but in a different way than that of a typical epic poem. The story centers on a group of British soldiers fighting at the Battle of the Somme in France during WWI. The story is based upon the author's own experiences as an infantryman in the war. The book also includes several pages of footnotes to accompany the story which are considered to be a contnuation of the poem-story. Parts of the book are quite beautiful while other parts are more difficult to understand, as there is frequent use of slang and colloquial language.
