The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World by Melinda Gates
I read this because my bookclub picked it. It's fine. There's nothing wrong with it. Obviously, the message is good. I'm glad that the Gates Foundation is doing important work. But I didn't find much here that I didn't already know. The book talks about her own journey from traditional gender roles to a deep understanding of why it's important to empower women. But I'm already the choir on that, so she didn't have to sell me (and I'm not sure that reading her own thoughts would sell me if I weren't already convinced).
I did enjoy the personal chapter where Melinda talks about ways she worked to create equality in her marriage and how she and Bill have tried to balance all the different parts of family, work, children, etc. But overall, her description is less useful to working women than, say, Michelle Obama's similar description in Becoming.
As authors reading their own books go, Ms. Gates does a fine enough job. Since it's a personal story, it's nice to hear her read it and it made some of the passages a bit less grating because she read them with real emotion. But, like many authors, she isn't all that familiar with audiobook narration and has a hard time not sounding like she's giving a speech instead of bringing a book to life. The cadence for each is somewhat different and this comes across more as a long speech/lecture than an audiobook.

The Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham
This is such a well written and compelling novel. I could barely put it down! I am a fan of Maugham, and this is him at this best. The characters are so well drawn you feel you could recognize them on the street. Maugham inserts himself literally, as the omniscient ‘author’ and this technique could not have been more effective. I can’t imagine this story being told any other way. The dialogue is sparking, and yet natural. The story itself is a very interesting exploration of America/Americans after WW1, and through the Depression. They are a very specific subset of wealthy Americans, who either were related or grew up together. That said, the majority of the novel takes place in Europe. Through the characters, Maugham (obliquely) examines the American Dream, social class, wealth and spirituality. 5*
Chapter 1, part X (13%) - "I found them sitting over a cup of tea." Ch. 4 (46%) 'He noticed the tea things. 'I'll have a cup of tea,' he said."

Murder Lo Mein (A Noodle Shop Mystery #3) by Vivien Chien
100% set in Cleveland (Ohio)
Review
I do truly enjoy this series more than any other cozy mysteries because it features an Asian protagonist who just loves her food! Does she sound exactly like me? Well, yes! lol Except that I'm probably not as brave as her or maybe not as curious as she is...
Lana Lee, once again, found herself embroiled in another murder mystery. As her restaurant's chef & friend, Peter, is participating in a noodle contest, one of the judges was murdered. Winning contest could push Ho-Lee Noodle House's popularity in Cleveland and this murder also happened on her patch! As much as she wanted the win, what's more important was keeping her friends and family safe. Whether she wanted to or not, Lana is going to solve this case!
I love how Lana' family provided comic relief and Detective Adam Trudeau, her romantic interest, is just to swoon for. Her friends are stout and loyal but I think, most of all, it just shows Lana's generous heart in having such friends around her. I'm definitely continuing with this series even if it's not my usual cup of tea although it's a bit hard seeing that I'm always salivating about the food but I can't go out to get some hot & sour soup right now!

The Night at the Crossroads by Georges Simenon
Detective Chief Inspector Maigret was sitting with his elbows on the desk, and when he pushed his chair back with a tired sigh, the interrogation of Carl Andersen had been going on for exactly seventeen hours.Seventeen hours! With this sentence, one can picture the scene. Surely the ashtrays are overflowing. Shirts are wrinkled. I could almost see the stubble of growth on the chins of both men. And for Maigret, I could almost smell defeat. No, I thought, not defeat!
The scene of the murder itself is at the Three Widows Crossroads, where a man has been found shot at point blank range in the car of Monsieur Michonnet, but the car is in Carl Andersen's garage. At the crossroads, there are three houses and a gas station. The Carl Andersen of the interrogation lives with his sister in one of the houses. Another is occupied by Monsieur Michonnet and wife, while the third is occupied by the owner of the gas station, Monsieur Oscar. The traffic at this out of the way place is a bit heavier than one might expect.
This is very short - fewer than 150 pages. I found it more cinematic than I remember most of the Maigret books I've read. As it was first published in 1931, I found it appropriate that I "saw" this as a Grade B film in black and white. I'm probably wrong, but for me it was 4-stars.

Casanova's Chinese Restaurant by Anthony Powell
I remember in my early teens being fascinated by the title of this book on my mother's shelves and trying to read it. What a disappointment - I thought it was going to be funny, and it was just a lot of very long dinner party conversations. I didn't get very far.
This is book five in the sequence. It's 1936 (except for a brief prologue set some years earlier, introducing the eponymous restaurant and the new characters for this book), Nick has been married for a year or two, and this book looks at marriage - but not Nick's. We see couples at second hand. In the background is the abdication of Edward VIII and the Spanish civil war.
Anyone who has got this far in the sequence should definitely read this one. I thought it was one of the best. But don't start here - I'd recommend reading them in order, so the style can grow on you.

The Good Husband of Zebra Drive by Alexander McCall Smith
This is exactly the right book to read just now during our COVID stay-at-home time. It is always like visiting with old friends, who are good people. As with the other ‘No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’ books the pacing is gentle and the problems (mysteries) require common sense. Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni tries his hand at detecting, and finds out that Precious Ramotswe makes it look easy. Charlie (one of the apprentice mechanics) and Mma Makutsi make life decisions that have unexpected ramifications. As well, Mma Ramotswe takes time to enjoy the scenery and season, which adds to the delightfulness of the book. 4*

Now in November by Josephine Winslow Johnson
Marget Haldmarne is the middle of three daughters living with their parents on a mortgaged farm in middle America during the Great Depression. A neighbour’s adult son comes to help on the farm, bringing both joy and pain for Marget, but no help can prevent the ever more oppressive drought and the sense of doom that comes with it.
This was a debut (and almost an only) novel, first published in 1934, that won the Pulitzer prize. The language is beautifully poetic, celebrating the landscape while evoking the feeling of being trapped in the middle of nowhere with people who don’t understand, and nothing to hope for but survival at best.

The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul (Dirk Gently #2) by Douglas Adams
Review
Kate is running late for her flight to Oslo, only to reach the check-in desk and find herself waiting behind 1 big man who has no ticket. No credit card. No chequebook. No passport. When suddenly the world turned orange...
Dirk is slow to wake and when he does, he realises that he is hours late for a meeting with a client. When he reaches his client's home, however, there were police cars and emergency vehicles all over the front yard. Oops, guess he's not just late!
I actually enjoyed this book better than the first book which I found a bit confusing. This book features some old Norse gods which are, as usual, their entertaining selves. I think these 2 books can also be read as stand-alone. And no need for read-the-book-before-you-watch the Netflix adaptations because aside from the protagonist, Dirk Gently, and the basis of his 'holistic detective agency', these stories are widely different.

The Miracle at Speedy Motors by Alexander McCall Smith
I thought it would be a good thing to continue basking in the niceness that is “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’ series. Of course, there are a variety of problems to be solved – one of which was unpleasant and I was worried a recurring character might be written out! However, it all worked out in the end – thank goodness. I realize these are characters in a novel, but I like the recurring characters and many (most) have had ups and downs in their lives, so I like occurrences to be more positive than not. There are many things to like about these novels, and I think I particularly enjoy how Smith has created what could be real people. They aren’t suave super-heroes, they are ordinary people trying to make a living and make a better life for themselves and their families. 4*

Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey
I read this only because a real-life book club (I can't say in person anymore, but a group of us meeting on Zoom!) wanted to read it -- and they all wanted to read it before they watched the TV show! I didn't even know there was a show - though I enjoyed the book enough that I might even watch it some day! The premise is complicated, but basically we're in a time where humanity has colonized Mars and the Asteroid Belt, and has outposts beyond. An incident - a ship falling off radar and everyone in it seemingly dying - sparks a cascade of events involving Jim and his team, who work on a water hauling ship but step up in this new world order, and Detective Miller, a burnt out Asteroid Belt cop. In many ways this is a classic space opera type of book - lots of details around how gravity affects life, the nitty gritty of space travel, and plenty of action. It's also really well done in terms of character development and pacing - it was a page turner and I definitely cared about the people involved. It took me 50-75 pages to get into it but then it was smooth sailing - and I suspect I'll pick up the next books (maybe I'll try to snag them before the summer season starts!!).

Quicksand by Nella Larsen
Some may think this not as interesting or powerful as her Passing. I don't remember enough of it to feel that way about it and this one is fresh. I think it is just as well no one took my blood pressure over the first half. The racism, both white and black, was enough to make me angry. It makes me angry that race matters to anyone. It makes me mad that our government asks about race on the census. It makes me mad that voting exit polls know which groups are likely to vote how. And there is more, of course. Why can't each of us just be a person?
Part of the problem for Helga Crane was that she was of mixed race. Again, I railed that she had to be any race at all. Helga had a hard time finding her place in the world. This feeling that she didn't fit anywhere was compounded by being female. This was not as overt as the racism and I think my reaction to what Larsen gives the reader in this latter section is influenced by history. In any case, I found the second half of the book quite compelling.
Because the book stirred so much emotion in me, I'm giving it 5-stars. I realize this might be generous.

Just Visiting (Crocodile Spirit Dreaming #1) by Graham Wilson
Review
A recommended read from a friend and I'm sorry I didn't quite enjoy it. I guess I expected something different from a 'mystery' book. The opening chapter sets up well and I got curious but then the rest of the novel is more like a romance novel but not quite. I guess it could've been more like psychological thriller but there just wasn't enough things happening. I was kind of a good vicarious way to travel around Australia & especially in the outback BUT I was bored, tbh. Fairly good ending even if I questioned why she did certain things. That last few paragraphs was a little bit dramatic, I think... I'm not keen to follow up with the series.

The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano: Written by Himself by Olaudah Equiano
This is an amazing book. Yes, it is hard to read at times because of the long sentences and paragraphs that were standard in books of the era (published 1789), and one might disagree with Equiano's religious views. But the story of his capture by a rival tribe somewhere in inland Benin, his sale several times within Africa until he reached the coast and was sold to European slave traders, then being bought by a sea captain to be educated and trained as a sailor, is nothing short of amazing.
After a time he was allowed to trade between the Caribbean islands on his own account, saving enough money to buy his freedom. But it wasn't easy. No master wanted to let go of such an intelligent and useful man. And he also had to face the constant dangers of sea voyages.
Equiano made the most of every opportunity that came his way. His persistence in the face of incredible odds is inspirational.

Lexile 1030
Catherine Sloper is a quiet, none-too-bright heiress who is an obvious target for a fortune-hunter, as her father clearly sees. But Catherine is inclined to think the best of everybody, so when said fortune-hunter makes a play for her, she's easily taken in - encouraged by her very silly aunt.
I surprised myself by loving this one! The introduction said that Henry James was emulating Balzac here, and if so, that must be a good thing, because it's one of his best-paced books, and remarkably short. Except for the first chapter, which tells us very little, it's all character, dialogue, and plot. I couldn't put it down - after that first chapter, I read the rest in one sitting.

Trent's Last Case by E.C. Bentley
Published in 1913, this is often cited as the original golden age mystery. Amateur detective and journalist Trent is sent to look into the death of a millionaire financier, who had a beautiful, unhappy wife and two male secretaries. Trent quickly becomes hopelessly entangled, but he is still the person with the best chance of solving the mystery.
I did guess who'd done it, but only with the advantage of having read dozens of later crime novels, and proceeding on the basis of "it won't be anyone obvious, so who's left?" I had no idea of the why or how.

The Stone Circle by Elly Griffiths
Well, I’m caught up as far as I can go at present in this series! That is practically unheard of.
We are back to familiar territory, the Norfolk coast, for this instalment. I think that makes for a stronger story (than the last book). This series relies on interesting and compelling characters and their continuing interactions/relationships. I really appreciate how Griffiths unfolds her character’s stories. The plot of this novel harkens back to the first in the series – when Ruth and Nelson first met. For a while it looks like there is a copycat criminal, but it becomes more complex than that. This series has made me quite interested in this part of England. There is so much incredibly old human history in this part of the world, which is very different from where I live. The mystery is solved, but we are left hanging because Ruth is on the cusp of making an important life decision. 4*
