Growing Things and Other Stories by Paul Tremblay

Review
I don't know whether it's because I'm not a fan of horrors and/or short-stories though there have been times that I love a horror story or a collection of short stories but I just didn't find any of these stories memorable. I did manage to remember some but my overall response to this book is

description

I was curious about the feature title, "Growing Things", and wondered what it could be but it was nothing particularly dazzling. Stories are dark and some quite weird but I always find that's what horror stories are like. Still, there was none that was particularly engaging though I did appreciate that rounding at the end (that is the last story also refers to the first).

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3099 comments 20.10 It's a Mystery (Elizabeth(Alaska)'s Task)
Behind Dead Eyes (DC Ian Bradshaw #2) by Howard Linskey

Review
Quite a bit of time has passed since I read the first book and perhaps the same amount of time has passed between book 1 to the beginning of book 2. The trio has gone their separate ways and yet different line of enquiries brought them back together in this instalment.

A faceless unidentifiable body of a young girl was found some months ago and the police was still unable to determine her identity. An ex-councillor's daughter has disappeared at around the same time (no, it's not that easy!). A meeting of a councillor, a prominent businessman, and another businessman who is also known as the head of a gang. And to top it all off, a convicted murderer persisted that he is innocent and wished for Tom Carney to look into his case. A tough case load for Tom and his mates but they're up for it. Their search for justice, however, may not end up the way they'd like it to be...

The beginning was a tad complicated as there are numerous lines of mysteries plus with the 3 POVs (alternating even within chapters denoting by gaps between paragraphs), it took a bit of time to get used to. However, after a time, the story flows on seamlessly and the end ties everything up well.

I'm sorry, Kelly. The Letters task applies to the title only, and including the subtitle is the only way to get to 21 letters for this one. I don't see another RwS task, unless at least half the book takes place in one of the cities for 20.5. As Rockefeller spent his youth in Cleveland, this is possible, though perhaps not likely.

We'd like to salvage the read for you, though, especially since this is such a long book. I don't know if you are doing Blackjack, but even if you don't plan to read 10 titles for it, you could use it here. It qualifies for

Heart 5 (US states)
Spade 6 (600+ pages)
Club Jack (has a J or a K in the title/subtitle)

It would get 5 points for the Not a Novel style, for a total of 20 points.

Let us know what you want to do.

Keeper: One House, Three Generations, and a Journey into Alzheimer's by Andrea Gillies

In 'Keeper', Andrea Gillies summarises her discoveries as a layperson researching Alzheimer's disease alongside a description of the gradual decline of her mother-in-law.

The neurological information is interesting if worrying, while the situation of this family of seven (three children, two parents, two grandparents) in their large house on an isolated stretch of Scottish coastline veers from depressing to terrifying. I wouldn't want to be any of these people - the children are starved for attention as the dementia-suffering grandmother insults them and takes all their mother's time, grandma and grandpa have been uprooted from their life and friends in the city and now have to watch each other becoming more and more isolated and disabled in their different ways, Dad is desperately trying to escape into his work, and Mum Andrea is going quietly (or sometimes loudly) crazy with all her responsibilities. The whole thing comes across as a ghastly mistake.

The moral of this tale seems to be: don't try to care for someone with Alzheimer's in your home, or if you must, at least make sure it's someone you cared about in the first place, not your husband's adoptive mother that you never had anything in common with. And if you are afraid of getting dementia yourself, as I am, don't read this book, well-written and fascinating though it is. Read something more hopeful, like Contented Dementia.

Slaves in the Family by Edward Ball

So engaging. The author narrates the audio version of this book and does a fabulous job. This heavily researched, Pulitzer prize winning history of the Ball family and the slaves who were forced into laboring on the rice plantations owned by the Balls. Mr. Ball describes the mixed reactions that he got to his research project--ranging from people who wanted nothing to do with him to those who ended up going back to visit the old plantation sites with him. He seems to have really engaged the project to try to figure out not only the history of the people but the lasting effects that slavery has had through the generations.

Highly recommended.

I loved the pictures in this book. I loved the idea of this book. I'm willing to continue the series just because of how inventive the concept is.

Unfortunately, I didn't love this book. I thought the writing was uneven and the effort to use the photographs ended up interfering with telling the story. I wanted more real character development. Jacob discovers what's happening, and gets better over time, but he felt more like a ten year old than a teenager.

I was planning to read this book out loud with my ten- and eight-year-old kids, but the beginning was too scary for them. Which is too bad, because this book ended up reading more like a middle-grade YA than like a crossover book.

The Mysterious Mr. Quin by Agatha Christie

I was very pleased to find that Hoopla has an audio version of this collection of short stories. I have a copy of this book, which is in such a fragile state that I haven’t been able to read it for years.

The main characters in all of the stories are Mr Satterthwaite and Mr Quinn, although Mr Quin often has a very small role. Mr Quin’s appearance indicates that something is going to happen. He is the ‘supernatural’ element in the stories. Mr Satterthwaite has spent his life being an observer of human nature, and his acquaintance with Mr Quin heightens his ability to separate the wheat from the chaff to solve mysteries or crimes. I really enjoyed listening to these stories. Mr Satterthwaite is wealthy and an art patron, so he moves in both those circles. There was some really fun characterization (particularly the bullying Duchess); and some interesting locales.

If you are a fan of Poirot or Miss Marple, you might find this collection a little unusual. However, if you would like to try some of Christie’s short stories this is a well written collection that is worth reading. I also would recommend the audio book as read by Hugh Fraser – he added a lot with his various accents. 4.5*

Valerie Brown | 3269 comments 10.9 Trilogy

All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy

I see that other reviewers (and Wikipedia) compare McCarthy’s writing in this novel to Hemmingway. I suppose upon reflection, I can agree. However, I did find his writing in the first part of the novel turgid. I stuck with it though, and in the end I do feel rewarded, in that I am interested enough in the main character, John Grady, to want to read the rest of the trilogy. As well, I appreciated McCarthy’s loving description of the country that Grady rides through by the end of the novel. There were times I felt I had to suspend disbelief given the epic journey and all that went along with it was being undertaken by 16 year old boys. I guess this book is many things though: a (very hard-core, dark) coming of age story, a nostalgic look at a very different and lost time, a romance, and a story of someone trying to figure out their place in the world. 4*

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments 10.10 Group Reads

The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa

I chose this group read because it was available digitally from my closed library. The story is a bit syrupy for my tastes...but not an unpleasant read. A road trip around Japan....told from a cat's point of view. The cat's owner needs to find a new caregiver for the cat....and the reader meets some of the owner's friends and family. A few secrets are revealed along the way as well.
I have two cats of my own... and although I have an attachment to both of them....I don't think it is as expressive as the relationship here. Plus...my cats most certainly would not do well traveling in a car....and if they ever went outside (which they don't), I can't imagine them walking with me or coming when I called. LOL
Two stars....only because I don't want GR to add similar books to my recommended lists.

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3099 comments 10.9 Trilogy (Tien's Task)
His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire #1) by Naomi Novik
book 9 of series includes note that it is "The final adventure…"

Review
Such a clever alternate history tale! There was no such thing as Aerial Corps during Napoleonic Wars IRL, of course, but in an alternate universe, there were dragons...

description

An exciting opening with the British Navy taking a French frigate as prize with a surprising find of a dragon egg on board. However, it is about to hatch with no land being in sight. The dragon must be harnessed immediately upon hatching, however, and so, with his sense of duty to country, Captain Will Laurence became the chosen handler. He never expected, however, that a dragon could prove to be such a sentient & intelligent being as Temeraire. As the country is faced with immediate invasion by the French, they are both swept into hard work & danger in defence of country.

I loved the relationship between Temeraire & Laurence. It's total bromance with a number of lines being that corny, if you didn't have context, you'd think you were reading a romance novel. Sweet, humorous, and it really just warmed your heart. Aside from this blossoming relationship, there were a few other surprises in the story and the last 1/3 was truly a thrilling action-packed so it was mostly an enjoyable & entertaining read. There was only that I felt a little conflicted with the battle and dragons being hurt & killed though I can't really explain the reason without spoilers so I'll just leave it at that.

I truly love this book. When first read the book in 2008, I rated it 4 stars. Now, upon rereading I give it a full 5 stars. I spent the last few chapters with tears in my eyes. Things I love about this book: the joyful spirit Anne exhibits in all she does and her appreciation of the beauties of the world, the wonderful way L. M. Montgomery built characters that I could recognize as if I really knew them, and the wholesome moral to the story. Yes, it is what we would now call young adult literature and it is filled with tropes found in stories for young girls. Its pattern is familiar and some might think of it as cliche. IThe book is wholesome rather than shocking and relies on the happy orphan girl stock character. Anne like Jane Eyre before her, or like Heidi, Rebecca or Pollyanna, brings joy to those around her and the whole cast of characters is better for her adoption. The entire book reminds me of my grandmother. My grandmother Irene was born in 1901 and much of her story resembles Anne's. Although not an orphan, grandmother lived on a farm with her elderly parents and attended a one room school house. She also had a childhood beau who became my grandfather. It is a sentimental story from the early 20th century that is joyful and comforting.

Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. The character and the story were packed with layers and loops of ideas and time. But the story was still easy to follow and had a light touch, even when talking about serious topics. Lillian would be an interesting character to meet and have a lunch with. I particularly liked how she said she was born in 1900, because 1899 made her sound so ancient. And I enjoyed her walk through the city, her determination, and her approach to the changes in her life and the roles she held in it. The way her emotional past and society's conventions are tangled up felt very real.

Fear of the Dark by Walter Mosley

I was happy to see a spot for this book in this season’s tasks, but I’m sad as well – now I’ve finished this series (really a trilogy). I have just loved the Fearless Jones novels, and this one was no exception.

The actual narrator is Paris Minton, and the story is told effectively in first person. Fearless is his true and steadfast friend in the complex and uncertain world of early 1950s Compton. Paris is a small(ish) man and a self-admitted coward who would rather spend his time in his bookstore, reading. However, trouble often seems to come knocking on his door. In this case, in the form of his ne’er do well cousin (Ulysses/Useless) and a young woman Paris had a fling with. The knock on the door that forces Paris to action is from his Aunt Three-Hearts, who comes up from Louisiana to find her son, Useless. He and Fearless have to figure out where Useless has disappeared to and that involves figuring out exactly what racket he was involved in, and who with.

You really feel like you are in Compton/LA of that era, or at least it seems authentic to me. I like that the characters are racially diverse, and even though racism (on the part of the police) was a very real thing Mosley doesn’t overdo it – it’s just part of everyday and affects the decision making of Paris and Fearless. It is a well written addition to the mystery-noir genre. 4*

I'm sorry, Marie. The MPE for this title doesn't have any subtitle, so it doesn't work for 10.4 High Five.

How Right You Are, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse

This book was just the tonic for a forced stay at home. Bertie Wooster and Jeeves have been on my radar for some time, but this is the first one I’ve read. I picked it from Hoopla’s list of bonus borrows randomly, under the mistaken impression that it was a mystery. Of course, it’s not; it’s humor. It really was funny, and I had a lot of ‘laugh out loud’ moments while listening. Once again, I chose an audio book and I would recommend it. The reader did the voices well, and I think it added a lot to hear it told in an upper crust accent. There are silly antics, mistaken identity, best laid plans (that don’t work out), a fake butler, tea on the lawn, cocktails and a feisty red-head – all in a large country house. In other words, all the makings of a farce. It was very well done and enjoyable. I’m definitely looking forward to my next ‘Jeeves’! 4*

=>If you have access to Hoopla they are having a promotion(?) for 'a limited time' (which I think at this point is until the end of April) where you can borrow items from the 'Bonus borrows' titles. They won't count against your monthly entitlement. You may have to dig to find something you like, but there seems to be a lot of choice.
