Welcome to Onyx and Ivory Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on March 4th and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each week we will be reading by chapters. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

Since we planed starting it on the 1st I started it then and read 5 chapters. I haven't read it yesterday and today, but I'll continue reading it tomorrow.

My thought so far are: It's more wordy than I'm used to, at least used to actual reading because I mostly listen to audibooks, but I like it. I want to know more about the thing between Kate and Corwin, but also I want to know more about them as individuals. I'm already sure Del is going to be the character whose appearances I'm going to look forward to.

Also, poor Pip 😢😢

As long as you guys finish in March before the thread is closed, whatever pace you finish at is just fine😊

I'm already at 30% and I'm so interested in the story. I feel like I haven't read something that I enjoyed so much in some time.

Oh, I started it on the first too! But my pace is kinda slumpy haha

Totally agree, poor Pip, that was sad :'( I'm glad Pip died so fast and not when we're in the middle of the book.

Yeah, I'm enjoying it too! In fact the last two YA books I read had a bit stupid MC. I'm glad Kate THINKS and doesn't do things to put herself in danger. I like the characters, and even if the story isn't set yet, I'm really interested in them. I love that they knew before so the romantic plot won't be a "love at first sight" story, which I despise a bit.

I'm on chapter 9 right now. I'm looking forward to their meeting after Corwin woke up. And I love Dal and his jokes, winking at both of them when talking about the other HAHAHA

Btw, I want one of those moonbelts so I won't have any monthly issues hahaha

The characters are great :D I don't know whose chapters I like more because I enjoy things from Kate's perspective and from Corwin's. And I agree, it's good that they already know each other and that there's a conflict.

I'm not that much ahead of you. Last night I finished Part I. I don't know if I'm going to read today, because I feel tired, but we are not that far from each other's chapters and I'll catch up. Yesterday I had to stop myself from continuing it because I didn't know on what chapter you are, and I didn't want to go too much ahead. It was a good thing the first part of the book ended 😅

I just finished chapter 15.

Some thoughts I had since I began part II till the end of chapter 14 (view spoiler)[
Somewhere among those chapters I started thinking about the daydrakes and I have some suspicions. Everyone assumes or is sure that the daydrakes are controlled by the Rising, but I don't like Edwin, I guess I'm getting a bad vibe from him.

The first time we encountered them they attacked Corwin and his caravan (the attack on that family could or could not be by the same creatures), and there was a pack. But now only one supposedly attacked Edwin... why only one. Plus, he's making decisions instead of the king and I guess he's liking it, so why wait for the sign to appear when he could just get rid of Corwin before that and not fight him...

I like that Corwin and Kate made up :D
Also, what will happen with Kate now that Master Raith sensed her using her magic?
And where's Dal, he's not so much present in these chapters I read 😢 I want more Del. What are your thoughts on him and Signe? I really hope they won't end up together, I like them as individuals and only one love relationship is more than enough. (hide spoiler)]

This book really have Serpent & Dove vibes~ (Plus the sweet buns) The story isn't as funny, but I'm really enjoying it.

I don't know why but I suspect that Bonner is gay? And Signe and Dal... I think they would be together some time? Not much, I don't think they are fond to long relationships haha

I like both Kate and Corwin, that they made up but have a bit of nostalgic for each other. Now that I finished chapter 15 I'm intrigued about what would happen next.

[spoiler]That's a good one but I think it's really the Magists that control the drakes. They hate wilders but I think they are far worse that them. I really want to read more and know about it... Surely now that they found the drake's jail. UGH Need to reeead! [/spoiler]

Oh, good you are not close to the end 😂 I got into a slump on Friday, I think, and I haven't read much of this and I was kinda afraid that I was soooo behind. I read 19 chapters, and hopefully I'll read some today.

Honestly, I haven't thought much about Bonner except that he may be an idiot for using magic to make the weapons and now that they are in Norgard... things don't look that great to me.

i'm starting chapter 18 right now~ I' so slow peaced and I have to study and I think I have some activities this weekend... though they may be cancelled because Covid.
If I do read more it would be on Sunday I think... so you go to your own pace and I'll catch up!

Chapter 21 I have a weird/stupid feeling because Kate took Signe's whatever it is. It wasn't nice to take it, especially if she hasn't seen it before, there's a reason she didn't see it. I think it's something very important to Signe.

Chapter 22 Damn :O Hale was not who Kate thought he was or who we were told he was.

Chapter 21 Oh yeah, I think it would have consequences x.x But I'm not really worried about that. The mess would be that there are no rubies now and it would be a good payment if needed.
I want to know what Corwin-Kate relationship would change from now on after they almost sex scene. I really like that the story it's not just about their relationship, but both of them have other things to think about.

Chapter 22 I didn't think Hale didn't had lovers. If Kate's mother wasn't involved with her it was for something, and it was an arranged marriage as they said. And it's normal that Kate really idealized his father.
I like that Kate discovered the Rising, but I'm not sure they have to have her as leader. Isn't Raith enough for that?
Now that we know more about Hale's powers I have a theory about what would have happened between he and the king. More or less.

Well, it doesn't say they want her as a leader, it says they want her to take her father's place among their ranks.

What's your theory?
I'm thinking, Hale was powerful with his magic and he could control humans.. so he tried to change the kings mind, the king sensed it and:
a) Hale tried to take somehow that knowledge from the king so that he could still be close to the king;
b) He on purpose scrambled the king's brain so that he couldn't tell anyone Hale was a wilder.

my theory is that Hale got into the king's mind and he interchanged minds somehow (?) so when Hale attacked it was really the king attacking Hale. So then, Hale's mind got back to her fathers body but not the king's. That's why noe it's like an empty shell. But I don't have all the pieces yet to prove it...

Ooh then it probably she would be a spy near to prince Corwin...

oooh, that's a nice theory :D

I have a good feeling about this book, and it seems that nothing wrong could happen to the characters. Maybe that's why I'm not really... hooked to it?

Chapter 30: OMG Kate finally told him. I didn't know if Corwin would be furious with her, but I'm glad he changed all the things to know something they both NEED to know. Let's see if my theory is good or wrong.

I know what you mean. I like it, I enjoy the writing and the characters, but there's something missing. The danger of Drakes and now Kate discovering Kiran don't feel like real danger to me.

I don't think I'm going to finish it today. I'm still not in a reading moo, but I plan to finish part two. Currently, I'm on chapter 29.

Wow chapter 32, at least the beginning with Corwin. I think the stakes are high enough now for me to be more interested what'll happen. It's just bad it's at the 80%.

Gosh, Edwin is so gaah.. I don't have the word for it.

I finished it!

Things did get a bit "at the edge of my seat", but at the end it still felt a bit easy? That may be my fault because I thought the thing with Edwin would be solved in this book. All in all, I enjoyed this one.

What are your thoughts?

I'm about to read chapter 34 but wow, I failed completely with my theory hahahah

It was a good theory. I was surprised by how things played out and I don't know if it's because the revelations are surprising or maybe because I got relaxed with this book and didn't expect much from it that I was surprised with the discoveries.

Hmm, maybe.. Honestly, I've been mostly listening to audio books and that goes pretty fast by, but with actual reading it feels that pages go so slow. I finished this fast because things did get more interesting towards the end and I couldn't just stop in the middle of action :D

I didn't expect most of the things either, but I liked them! I suspected of Rendborne because he was the only kind minister XD Usually the corrupted ones (irl too) are the ones with the best smile...

The last part was SO interesting. I did expect that they arrested Kate, but not that Rendborne was creating an army and not that he was almost a God. I really liked that the uror mark had magic. I expected it when they said the uror sign and the king were bound together. It reminded me of Kate's powers.
Also the part where Kate killed Vikas... ugh. It would mark her, I think.
But what about the uror trial? They will continue on the next one or Edwin will win because Corwin had fleed? XD

Oh, god. I just saw the message. I don't know why I haven't seen it earlier.

Hm, I haven't thought about the uror trial... Edwin will probably say that Corwin is a traitor and get the people on his side that way? who knows.
I can't get my hands on the second book for now 😢 and it's a shame.

oooh me neither. I have to wait (voluntary) until the quarantine is over to pick new books, but I have hundreds to read so I don't mind.
