i read the first one years ago... do you guys think it would be easier to pick this one up? i don't actually have the first book anymore of i'd reread. I've wanted to read the rest of the books I just don't want to be lost.

I'm not sure. Sometimes it's easy for me to pick up a book if it's been awhile since I read the first book and sometimes it's not as easy.. Like Prodigy - - it's been so long since I read Legend that I couldn't get into Prodigy. I'm going to have to re-read the first.

If you wanted to re-read city of bones though - there's a feed for the first book.. starts tomorrow.

Same here. This week has been busy.

I prefer going at my own pace but some people like to read together. Which is why I always ask.

Yeah - too many books lined up this week for me. But after this week it calms down a lot. So I will definitely try to finish by the end of the weekend :) I already have the second book ready to go though so I can jump right in.

I haven't started this book yet and I don't think anyone else has yet either.

FINALLY! I finished City of Bones and I'm about to start this one. Hopefully I won't get sidetracked reading this.

I'm planning to start this tonight, maybe tomorrow morning.

Chapters 1-7 (Part I)

So far I'm liking this book. However, we still have a lot to read.


(view spoiler)[I was surprised that they threw Jace in a cell in the Silent City. Although, he should have known better than to be a smart a**. I hope that Clary's mother isn't unconscious for too long. Although, it won't surprise me if they drag that out. It was nice that Clary finally let something happen between her and Simon. Since Simon has liked her for a long time. It will be interesting to see how long that keeps up. (hide spoiler)]

Up through chapter 4

I feel like I've read so much, then when I look, it's only been 15 pages. Still, this book is great.

(view spoiler)[Valentine using that young warlock for a summoning was cruel. But of course, that's who Valentine is. Cruel to a fault, with no care but for himself. I'm liking the fact that Jace is denying his true parentage. He wants nothing to do with Valentine, yet can't say that he hates him. Maryse shouldn't have expected him to do so. But I see why she did it now, she was trying to get him out before the Inquisitor came. The Inquisitor seems scarier than what Maryse was. I don't like her. She seems to know how much power she has and is set on showing others what she's capable of. Full of herself much? I wonder what/who is missing that Jocelyn isn't waking up. What will she say when she does? I don't mind the relationship between Simon and Clary but just a second ago she was still depressed about the fact that Jace is her brother and now suddenly she's okay with Simon? I think it's too soon for that. (hide spoiler)]

I'm through chapter 8, and so far I really like it. (view spoiler)[I didn't think Simon would become a vampire so soon. Also, it's funny that Magnus had never seen a vampire reborn before. I don't like Jace right now, maybe later in the series he will be more likable, but I feel bad for him. The way most of the adult Shadowhunters believe he's helping his father is sad. He's a jerk but not evil. Also, it really disturbing that Jace and Clary want to be a couple even though they're siblings. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 8-13 (Part II)

(view spoiler)[As we can see the Simon & Clary thing didn't last long. Not surprising since she still has it bad for Jace. Valentine told Jace that he was doing this basically for the greater good. We all know that is a lie. I'm not sure yet How I feel about Simon being a vampire yet. I guess it will just take time. (hide spoiler)]


Question: Am I the only one who doesn't like Jace? He comes across as such a jerk.

I just finished this book yesterday! Really like it. I still somehow don't believe that Jace and Clary are siblings. Nope.

Nope, I don't like him either. My friend kept talking about him saying how amazing he is, I don't see the appeal.

Up through chapter 7

(view spoiler)[I don't think it's fair that Jace is basically being blamed for his father's deeds. And now with the sword taken, Jace looks guilty. Valentine is sick and twisted. A real father of the year. But really, for all the Silent Brothers to be murdered, that was harsh. They were practically mutilated. What on earth does Valentine want with the sword? I can't help thinking about comparing this to Harry potter, the elder wand, the resurrection stone and the cloak of invisibility once owned by one person makes that person the master of death. There are three Mortal instruments correct? Do the three of them together serve some purpose? The sword allows someone not to lie? (I don't see how that would help Valentine. People fear him enough not to be stupid by lying to him) The cup creates more shadowhunters, what is the third item and what does it do? (although, that probably won't be answered in this book) (hide spoiler)]

I've finally started! I changed it up this time and I'm listening to the audio book for this book. It's not the same as reading, but I've gotten used to her voice now.

I'm slowly not liking him more and more as well Hannah.
Also I'm not liking the Inquisitor.

I'm just glad that I'm not the only one who doesn't like him.

Chapters 14-19 (Part III) & Epilogue


(view spoiler)[It did not surprise me that the Inquisitor tried to pull something. Although, I can understand why she would be hurt. However, revenge isn't the answer. In the epilogue Clary was told that there is a way to save her mom. I really hope they can and most importantly I hope they do not drag it out too long. I was also surprised when I found out that Luke was in love with Jocelyn.(view spoiler)[ (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)]

@Sara (view spoiler)[I honestly thought that when they found out they're siblings it'd be 'game over, move on to someone else' Clary has Simon and even though she forgot about him and put him through an emotional roller coaster, he's still there for her. Jace can get anyone he wants. I skipped most of the description of that kissing scene at the Seelie Court. I couldn't read it. I'm HOPING that you already read that part and I didn't ruin that for you. (hide spoiler)]

up through chapter 13

(view spoiler)[The Seelie Queen was tricky and cruel. Weirded out by Jace's need of wanting to be with Clary. At least she realises that that is a no no. So now we know what Valentine wants with the sword. One man shouldn't have that much power. It's destructive. Simon as a vampire seems cool, I like it. I want to know now, what was Jace's decision? Is he fore or against his father? As it was said in a previous chapter. Valentine only believes there are two sides. Those that agree with him, and those that don't. (hide spoiler)]

an added thought (view spoiler)[I don't like the fact that everyone's pushing Clary down. They have no faith in her. It's like 'Don't go out there without us, you'll die.' She has shadowhunter blood in her, it's natural. And how can she learn if they keep coddling her? thank you, rant over. (hide spoiler)]

@Caron (view spoiler)[No no, don't worry I read that part - that's where I got super creeped out too. I couldn't really skim over it too much since I'm listening to the audio book. But I felt very awkward listening to that scene. It was even awkward-er (yes I know that's not a word, but I have no other owrd to describe this part haha) that Jace STILL wanted to be with Clary when he was in the bathroom about to shower.. he was offended that she thought it was weird! And now that Simon's a vampire, I guess that's game over for all of Clary's relationships - even though Simon still wants to try to make it work? (hide spoiler)]

up through chapter 19 & Epilogue

(view spoiler)[The Inquisitor to me is very Umbridge-like. Not even close to being on my list of favoured people. Clary and Jace have talking out of turn in common. I guess it runs in the family. Sure, she was trying to stop the Inquisitor from taking Jace, but saying anything could only make the situation worse. A fearlessness rune? Nice! For a moment there I thought that Jace putting the rune on Alex made Maia more fearful, turns out it was only Agramon. SIMON DEAD? NO! But alas, SIMON LIVES! I was so worried there. Simon became my favourite character. Valentine said he can see other people's feelings, though I think Clary is right, he can't feel them himself. They call people like that Sociopaths rights? Magnus! I feel for him. It's like he and Simon should have gotten along well. Because it clear how he feels for Alec but Alec is still hung up on Jace. So sad. Valentine once again turning his children against him by trying to draw them in. The amount of times he was shocked made me giddy with excitement. And once again SIMOOOOOON! But he lives. He's dead-but-not-really thing is going to give me a heart attack. I'm guessing Jace's blood really helped. They broke up...but I guess the whole 'If you love something, let it go...' situation is in play. I totally LOL-ed at the werewolves arguing about who would win in fight. Dumbledore or Magnus. WOAH! That ending. So yes, now I can't wait to find out what the spell is/was and what Jocelyn will say when she wakes up. I'm having way more feels in this last part of the book than I did in the beginning. I got annoyed at how long I was taking to finish it and then bam! it ended so amazingly. I loved it. 5/5, yes! Since everyone is finishing this book. We need to decide when we want to read book 3.

I'm okay with starting next week? Towards the 20th perhaps? I don't know about others but I'm taking part in 2 more buddy reads

I'm okay with waiting for a week or so.. I have a few books lined up right after this one and I don't want to feel overwhelmed.

I have my copy already. So, whenever you guys want is fine by me. I do have a buddy read on the 24th. Other than that I'm free.

I'm at 89%. :) I want to read all your spoilers, but I don't wanna ruin the ending for me. So close!
