message 1: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments I would like to put together a horror anthology of all goodreads authors and publish it through Amazon. We can pick a theme. Anyone interested?

message 2: by John (new)

John (frayerbanac) | 336 comments Definitely

message 3: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments Cool. Good. Any ideas on a theme? I don't want to just go ghosts, zombies, vampires, etc. Need something better.

message 4: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Coming up with a theme that isn't used much would be good, some of the themes have been run into the ground.

message 5: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments Exactly. I want it to stand out, but just the same it has to be something that people will know and want to read. Any suggestions?

message 6: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Horton | 324 comments Are there any other details currently? Compensation? Plans for editing and cover art? How are final stories going to be chosen?

message 7: by John (new)

John (frayerbanac) | 336 comments Suspense has a wide spectrum. One could write a suspense story around anything...

message 8: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments I figured once we had authors wanting to do it Shaun we could discuss and work out all the details together to make sure it I fair and everyone agrees. Before I went that far I wanted to see if people would be into the idea. I think it would be good way to showcase a variety of authors

message 9: by S. (new)

S. Parrish | 11 comments Interested. I have several weird short stories.

message 10: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Sci-fi horror, body horror, mythological horror, plant horror, noir horror, b horror, giant monsters, good old fashioned dark fantasy/sword and sorcery ala Karl Edward Wagner and Robert E Howard, plagues.

message 11: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments I will take any suggestions you have.

message 12: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments hmm...what about something cross genre, like horror set in fantasy - sword and sorcery horror or something like that. That could be interesting

message 13: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments What about "the turning"? horror stories of metamorphosis? could be how they turned into a vampire, or a zombie, or a werewolf, or a killer, or a hunter, or something far more imaginative. just an idea

message 14: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Yes, that would be interesting.

message 15: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) There are quite a few zomb, vamp and were anthos and novels however, i know I've had a hell of a time getting mine piucked up. Sword and Sorcery might draw more inrest.

message 16: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments I like that because it can span different genres and leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

message 17: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments Well, that's the thing. It's not specific to those things. Different authors can take it different places. I know personally, I would try to take it somewhere that I don't think anyone else will. I like to do that. Then it will also give us a great deal of keywords when trying to sell it lol Of course, if you wanted to, you could make your story sword and sorcery. It could be how someone was turned into a goblin, or a mage, or anything.

message 18: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I'd be up for contributing.

message 19: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Turning Point: The Moment Everything Changed might be a good title.

message 20: by R. (new)

R. Adrianus | 2 comments Definitely. I'd be excited to contribute.

message 21: by Ashe (new)

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) I'm interested in hearing more details.

message 22: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments I'm definitely interested. Also western horror could be an interesting topic as well.

message 23: by Quentin (new)

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) | 175 comments I'd be willing to contribute, especially if western horror, but I'd be willing to write in any genre, it could be a good chance to write something that may be a little different.

message 24: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 16, 2014 05:32PM) (new)

I just finished my first novel and am looking to an agent/publication. Otherwise , I will publish it myself. I have had a few short stories and some poems published once upon a time as well. Does this make me an 'author'? Because if it does, I would love to contribute to this anthology.

I would enjoy writing something pertaining to the theme whatever it might be in the end. Before I go to sleep, I am going to ponder some ideas theme-wise; I will see if I might come up with any which are unique and inspiring. However, "Sword & Sorcery" is a lovely idea.

message 25: by Ashe (new)

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) I'm diggin all tthe S&S love.

message 26: by Quentin (new)

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) | 175 comments I practically learned to read on Conan comics, so I'm all about the S&S

message 27: by Ashe (new)

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) What's not to love?

message 28: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments Still scarred by my dog eating my Conan comics....anyway, a horror magazine I was looking to contribute to just did a western horror themed issue. Did sound interesting, but Do you all not like the turning point idea? it has so much potential. Your story could be western or sword and sorcery. it can be totally different for each other. Star...you sound author enough for me :)

message 29: by Ashe (new)

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) I dig the turning/changing theme.

message 30: by Zach (new)

Zach Bohannon (zachbohannon) If you decide to go with the western idea, I have a 6,000 word story I could contribute. Sounds like S&S may be the ticket though :)

I would also be careful about staying away from zombie and vampire stuff just because it's oversaturated. Go look on Amazon and see the books in those genres not doing well. Good marketing and a GREAT cover can get you a long way. And with multiple authors, marketing should be good. I'm just saying if most people want to do that or you do, just do it. The stories will be different just cause each author has their own perspective.

message 31: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments Well, I got a few authors from other threads too. Now we should discuss some details, like maximum word count?

message 32: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments I just threw the western horror idea out there cause Amanda had mentioned several sub horror genres. Perhaps people can decide what type of horror they wish to do and then Chisto can organize it from there.

message 33: by Amanda (last edited Dec 17, 2014 09:45AM) (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Chisto's main idea was a turning point book, where we all write whatever we want to write with the point being that it's the character's point at which they turned into whatev ver it is they are. It could work for western, S n S, vamps, weres, killers etc.

message 34: by Ashe (new)

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) I got an idea for something but i'm still chewing. Also, a kickstarter for the collection would probably be the best way to go.

message 35: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Kickstarter or IndieGoGo would be an idea, yes.

message 36: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments That is definitely an idea. I was thinking of trying to hit up someone at this website and see if they would sponsor it. We could put the goodreads logo on the book and it would be all goodreads authors and advertising for them as well

message 37: by Ashe (new)

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) I think you'd have to get the site's permission to use their name and logo for promotion.

message 38: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) I'd write a letter to GR to see if they would be interested in that.

message 39: by Dean (new)

Dean Edwards (deancedwards) | 10 comments Hi everyone, I'm interested too. Less keen on zombie and vampire stories being in the anthology, but if the stories are truly exceptional ...

Turning idea is cool, but maybe it could be more focused to make us think more and work harder in order to generate more unique stories.

Also, it would be good to ask more readers what they want to read, in addition to what we writers want to write. Perhaps we could get a poll going.

So, yeah, definitely interested. Will try to come up with some ideas.

message 40: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments Dean, the poll is a good idea. When I was in highschool I asked all my classmates to write down what scared them. Then I took the most reoccurring themes and worked them into a story together which had the desired effect.

message 41: by Charles (new)

Charles Garard (goodreadscomcharles_garard) | 44 comments DARK NEIGHBORHOODS Paranormal novel (Kindle or Cloud Reader)

Alex Jacobs interviews Dr. Harper Paget

Alex: "By the way, Harper, I understand that you lost some loved ones before you ever came to Atlanta."
Harper: "Yes. I lost my wife out in San Diego, California, and, later, an Indonesian lady friend in China. Both were killed by these entities to get at me."
Alex: "Where did this all start?"
Harper: "Centuries ago. Since ancient Greece with the lamiae and the kuntilanak in Indonesia. They came to Atlanta, to the DARK NEIGHBORHOODS, because we may have brought them here."
Alex: "Where did it start for you?"
Harper: "In a little farmhouse back in Illinois. Some of my friends think we brought them to this dimension through the Ouija board. I think they have been wanting to come to this time and place because they have been enemies of my ancestors for centuries. They know about my publications that try to warn the world about them."
Alex: "And they want to stop you, of course."
Harper: "Yes. And if they do, we will have many DARK NEIGHBORHOODS."

message 42: by Ashe (new)

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) Dude, we're talking about putting together an anthology not promoting our own books.

message 43: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments Yeah. That's why I didn't respond. Anyhow...so do you think we should have a minimum or maximum word length? I think if we get a lot of contributors we don't want the book to be 1000 pages.

message 44: by Ashe (new)

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) Definitely a maximum.

message 45: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) At JEA we go with 3-10,000 words. works out pretty well.

message 46: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments 10,000 sounds fair. I'm not very good at writing much shorter than that.

message 47: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments 10,000 words? can it be under that amount?

message 48: by Quentin (new)

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) | 175 comments I would think the minimum could be pretty low? If you can write a good story that's really short, that's a bit impressive in itself.

message 49: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) I think 10 K is the max.

message 50: by Ashe (new)

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) Yeah, 10 is max.
