Who would have thought that we would be called upon to serve our country by staying home and reading? Oh well, now is our chance to prove what we are made of. We are now taking nominations for two discussions; Books published Prior to 1980 or books published After 1980. We will accept nominations for seven days or until six books have been nominated in each category.
As always, nominations may be of any genre but must have a theme that can arguably be defined as southern.

Nominations received so far
Pre-1980

1. A Diary from Dixie: A Journal of the Confederacy, 1860-1865, by Mary Chesnut
2. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, by Tennessee Williams
3. The Land Breakers, by John Ehle
4. Now in November by Josephine Winslow Johnson
5. What My Heart Wants to Tell, by Verna Mae Slone
6. Knight's Gambit, stories by William Faulkner
Post-1980
1. Wayfaring Stranger, by James Lee Burke
2. Burning Bright, by Ron Rash
3. Promise, by Minrose Gwin
4. The Moonshiner's Daughter, by Donna Everhart
5. Hill Women: Finding Family and a Way Forward in the Appalachian Mountains, by Cassie Chambers
6. The Past Is Never, by Tiffany Quay Tyson
It appears that the Post-1980 nominations are full and that we have room for one more Pre-1980 nomination.

Stay safe everyone. Wash your hands and send in your nominations.

Tina | 485 comments Post 1980 - The Past Is Never Tiffany Quay Tyson

A compelling addition to contemporary Southern Gothic fiction, deftly weaving together local legends, magical realism, and the search for a missing child.

Winner of the Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction, the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize, the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Fiction Award, and Mississippi Author Award for Adult fiction.

Siblings Bert, Willet, and Pansy know better than to go swimming at the old rock quarry. According to their father, it's the devil's place, a place that's been cursed and forgotten. But Mississippi Delta summer days are scorching hot and they can't resist cooling off in the dark, bottomless water. Until the day six-year-old Pansy disappears. Not drowned, not lost . . . simply gone.

After years with no sign, no hope of ever finding Pansy alive, Bert and Willet have tried to move on. But as surely as their mother died of a broken heart, they can't let go. So when clues surface drawing them to the remote tip of Florida, they drop everything and drive south. Deep in the murky depths of the Florida Everglades they may find the answer to Pansy's mysterious disappearance . . . but truth, like the past, is sometimes better left where it lies.

Perfect for fans of Flannery O'Connor and Dorothy Allison, The Past Is Never is an atmospheric, haunting story of myths, legends, and the good and evil we carry in our hearts

Vicki, to find a list of the books that we have read, go to the group bookshelf, then limit the list to the Read books using the button on the left side. Finally, sort the list chronologically by pressing the date started column header.
