A recent report from Oxfam (https://indepth.oxfam.org.uk/time-to-...) states that "the monetary value of unpaid care work globally for women aged 15 and over is at least 10.8 trillion dollars annually". I was a bit shocked by this figure - what did you think?
In Chapter 3 of Invisible Women, Criado Perez discusses the unpaid domestic and care work that all too often falls squarely on women. From cooking and cleaning, to caring for children or sick family members, it's no wonder that women can easily find themselves in a position where they have no choice but to work part-time or take positions with lower pay and more flexibility in order to accommodate their unpaid responsibilities.
The New York Times recently posted an article entitled "Young Men Embrace Gender Equality, But They Still Don't Vacuum" (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/11/up...), which I also think is worth a read when considering this topic.
In your own experiences, do you find it true that modern women are still shouldering the burden of domestic duties? If you are married or in a domestic partnership, is the division of labour equal? Have you ever felt frustrated or overwhelmed by the amount of unpaid labour you are required to do?
Is there anything we can do to solve this problem? Do women need to go on strike the way they did in Iceland in 1975, or is there another way?
