Okay, I think my social battery is more or less replenished. This weekend is Passover and Easter (Chag Sameach and Hoppy Easter, celebrants!) so, what about the following Sunday? Is that a good time? Or y'all good, got your social circles on point now?

message 117: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2796 comments Allison wrote: "you're in... Indonesia? which time zone?"

GMT+7 (WIB)

The 10 AM EST time is preferable than the other time slot.

message 118: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I will lurk in the shadows of the chat, talking about butts.

message 119: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14225 comments Mod
There'd been talk of a Le Guin (Left Hand? That's an upcoming re-read) or Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars.

How is 11 am EST? I think thats 10 PM GMT+7, 8 am Pacific. Is that too late Silvana?

message 120: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14225 comments Mod
Unless our west coast friends are not joining, then we can totally do 10 am EST.

message 121: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments To be clear, we're talking about April 19th, right?

message 122: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2796 comments 11 AM EST is still better, Allison, since your PM is too early for me :D

message 123: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14225 comments Mod
Great! 11 am EDT April 19

message 124: by Jessalyn (new)

Jessalyn Joy | 19 comments What book are you guys discussing?

message 125: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (justiceofkalr) | 403 comments Oh, cool idea! If you guys are discussing books that I can get my hands on, then I'll try and join in for the next time!

message 126: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (last edited Apr 10, 2020 06:48AM) (new)

Allison Hurd | 14225 comments Mod
We're discussing what book! I've put forward The Left Hand of Darkness or Red Mars. The requirement is please that it be a book off the group shelf, preferably something everyone joining has read or can read in a week. (Left Hand is quite short!)

message 127: by Anna (last edited Apr 13, 2020 04:05PM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments World Clock list of what the meeting time will be in different timezones. Click on "Make changes to current locations or date" to see your city/timezone. Or tell me where you are, and I'll add your timezone to the link :)

Not sure if I've time to reread but I expect to enjoy listening to the discussion. Both authors are among my faves, after all.

Just a thought, but it might be interesting to consider adding a session - if we have time - like "What is your Current Obsession?" or "What Culture Have we Consumed?" Some podcasts like the Galactic Suburbia or OOAC have those sessions where every host could talk about their current consumption or obsession in SFF culture (which could be books, TV series or anything).

Allison Hurd | 14225 comments Mod
I like it, Silvana! I'm also open to other book ideas, just looking for ones folks have likely read at some point, or could acquire with minimal inconvenience.

message 130: by Nicol (new)

Nicol | 505 comments I’m so sad I missed the first one. How is this done conference call or video conference? Sorry if that’s already been said and I missed it.

message 131: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14225 comments Mod
No worries, Nicol! We used Zoom last time which seemed to work fairly well, and I'll be doing that again :)

message 132: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 271 comments Are we also going to discuss The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August or will that be for the next one as this is still a group read going on?

message 133: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14225 comments Mod
I'm open to suggestions! I've given 2, First Fifteen is definitely an option. What have folks all read (or will have read in the next 10ish days?)

message 134: by Bill (new)

Bill | 197 comments I have First Fifteen out from my library right now so that would work for me. I’ve read Left Hand but don’t have access to Red Mars right now.

message 135: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (justiceofkalr) | 403 comments Oh, nice. I already own and have read Left Hand, and Red Mars and First Fifteen are both available for me on Overdrive, so those are all good with me!

message 136: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Both Left Hand and Red Mars (and the rest of the trilogy) are on audio on Scribd, which is free at the moment!

message 137: by Christopher (new)

Christopher | 981 comments Also I had no idea Left Hand was so short, the audiobook is under two hours!

message 138: by Dawn F (new)

Dawn F (psychedk) | 1223 comments @Christopher It’s not that short, it’s 9 hours and 39 minutes long, narrated by George Guidall. Whatever version you’ve found must be heavily edited!

message 139: by Christopher (new)

Christopher | 981 comments ah yes, it's the BBC version.... can see if i can get a hold of a better copy

message 140: by Bill (new)

Bill | 197 comments Thanks Anna. I signed up to scribd and got it downloaded.

message 141: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14225 comments Mod
So...we're presently thinking First 15 and Left Hand? The idea was to pick one lol so we don't overwhelm people who are less loose-y goose-y than I am about things like "deadlines."

message 142: by Christopher (new)

Christopher | 981 comments My preference of the three:

1) Left Hand of Darkness (on my TBR and seems doable in 1 week)
2) Red Mars (same, but longer, although I am 100 pages in)
3) First 15 (I have the book out, but unsure I want to read it)

Also wouldn't mind Just City, but realize it wasn't on the original docket.

message 143: by Kaa (new)

Kaa | 1544 comments I'm in! My preference for discussion would be Left Hand.

message 144: by Dawn F (new)

Dawn F (psychedk) | 1223 comments Damn, y’all gonna make me re-read it, aren’t you XD

message 145: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3679 comments I’m open to either Left Hand or Red Mars, since I’ve read them both.

message 146: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I would most enjoy listening to you guys discussing Left Hand, but since I won't be participating in the discussion, I don't think I have a vote :)

message 147: by Nicol (new)

Nicol | 505 comments I vote left hand of darkness too

message 148: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 17 comments I would like to join! I live on the east coast USA and so I believe that works well. I am interested in reading Left Hand also.

message 149: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14225 comments Mod
Okay, I'm seeing Left Hand, and if folks have time to read it, we'll take a vote about discussing First Fifteen. I'll update the first comment with the time and book :)

message 150: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 262 comments I'll hopefully finish First Fifteen this weekend and can start Left Hand after that, so I'd be find with either or both.
