Anyone who is sad about missing conventions should read Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones. It's one of her few adult books, and it's great for anyone who has been to at least one SFF con. It takes place in 1996, so it is a bit dated, but the con aspect is spot on in my opinion. I'm currently rereading it, and it's made me laugh on several occasions.
