Jen K | 3143 comments I've never actually read anything by Rebecca Solnit until this memoir. The beautiful and thoughtful writing on important issues inspire me to read more by her. Solnit describes how started her adult life at a younger age than most in San Francisco enamored with idea of writing her own stories into books. As she studied English and then Journalism, she also studied art in her work study at a museum and the community of her mostly black neighborhood, a end destination for many of the southern slaves in their migration for better lives. After an abusive childhood where Solnit learned to be invisible, Solnit found herself, her voice and in her work tried to support the voices of other invisible populations. She stood up for American Indians fighting the testing of nuclear bombs near their communities and their loss of land, for the gay men that she befriended in San Francisco and the women who were not seen as equal to the men- "It's not you. It's the patriarchy." Her earlier book of essays Men Explain Things to Me led to the term "mansplaining".

I look forward to more of her work.
