EPBOT Readers discussion

Hi everyone, I figure it's about time to be selecting the next book!

Rules for suggestions:

1) Please don't just list books you're planning to read. Give a sentence or two on why you think we should read a book as a book club.

2) If you made a suggestion before, please re-submit it for this time to be included. I won't be going to past suggestion threads, this is a new round.

3) If someone already listed something you like/what you would suggest, you can "vote " for it by adding support. You can add your own reasoning why you think we should read it.

After that, we'll gather up the books that have the most support and put them into a proper poll for the final selection.

I heard about this one in another group, and it sounds like perhaps the most amazing concept I've ever heard of:

Space Opera

It sounds like so much fun, which I think we could all use right now. The first sentence of the description - "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy meets the joy and glamour of Eurovision..." is pretty much the platonic ideal of awesomeness.

Oh i've been meaning to read that one a while, i just keep not getting around to it!

I'll resubmit Starless by Jacqueline Carey - apparently I don't go for stars? ;). Anyway, I've been trying to seek out more books that have positive representations of queer folks, and I keep seeing this one recommended. I've loved Carey's Kushiel books so I want to read more of her work!

I'm going to suggest The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. This is my next pick for my IRL book club, and Tor is recommending it for their read along with this blurb: "Not only is it a rich, standalone novel, with one of the most compelling main characters we’ve ever met in a book: Maia, half-Goblin, banished, untrained in the ways of the Court, is forced to take the throne when his father the Emperor Varenechibel IV dies in a mysterious accident. How can he possibly learn to lead people who hate him? But that’s just PLOT, the real reason we’ve chosen The Goblin Emperor is because it’s a lovely, warm, comforting read, and we figure we can all use a little comfort right now."

I first read it because I'm friends with the author's sister, and think it will appeal to many people here.

I would go for any of the books already mentioned.

Still trying to think of something to nominate, but I don't want to suggest something too new that might have longer wait times at the library. I'll think about it.

Ooh, another vote for Space Opera. That’s been on my list!

I’d like to request Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. I haven’t read it but I have read her other stuff and she’s a fantastic author. I also feel like it would have many great discussion points, and be a very divisive book - leading to a great discussion.

I loved The Goblin Emperor!

I think I might toss out a nomination for Witchmark. It just sounds intriguing to me, and I feel like it could prompt some interesting discussions.

Just a note, I read Ninth House last year and I really enjoyed it and would be interested to hear others' thoughts. However, I would definitely caution people to review trigger warnings before reading if you're at all sensitive.

A note on Witchmark - TOR books offered this as a free DRM-free ebook a little while ago, so I have a copy I can share with people here. It's MOBI format (Amazon/Kindle), but there are programs that can transform it, if you prefer a different reader. Can't help with paper copies, but this'd let folks who enjoy ebooks to all read it at the same time without waiting on library loans!

I'd picked witchmark up during that too, i just haven't gotten around to reading it

I think I'll gather up a poll on Monday, so if there's any more suggestions/comments/votes, get them in!

I'll see how this one goes because our library is indefinitely closed, book stores are closed. We'll see how much the final selection costs online (I read books, I don't have an e-reader).

Fun! I just requested it from my library - they're estimating an 11-week wait though :(

that sucks! The good news is, I don't close the questions down. so even if it takes that whole time to get it (sometimes they go faster if people end up skipping their holds/return early), you can always join in later!

It looks like my library ditched their ebook copy and only has this on audio. On the plus side, it's a short hold list - I'm #2 in line :)
