I Read Comic Books discussion

With physical libraries and my local comic shop closed right now, I was expecting that I would dig into my massive backlog of comics that I own and haven't read yet. Instead, I used my increased March Hoopla credits to check out about half of the titles for the reading challenge.

How have the shelter-in-place orders and temporary business closures changed your reading habits? Are you more drawn to certain types of stories right now with everything going on?

I wish I was reading more - with working from home I feel like I have less reading time than ever! However, the library also closed all book drops so I have most of the reading challenge books right now and will until they reopen in May - hoping that will encourage me to get back into it!

I had high hopes of completing the challenge in March but it's been so chaotic I haven't had a chance to read much of anything this month, unfortunately (and a new Animal Crossing coming out didn't help, lol) but I think I'm pretty much adjusted to being at home all the time and will be shifting into the new normal and get back to reading again soon. :)

My main change is I can't get physical books from the library anymore, so I'm reading the ones that are already in my house. That is a good thing! I need to thin the shelves and I do have some good stuff laying around.

I'm also continuing to use Hoopla for comics. But for other books, I'm reading what I own.

I've been reading more. Pretty much all digital comics through my library though. Also, I've been trying to work through the excessive amount of comics I have from Humble Bundle. That's been slow going though because everything I put on hold through the library seems to come available at the same time.

I'd like to get through some of my physical backlog. I don't see that happening anytime soon though.

Like Phil, I started going through all my Humble Bundles I haven't read over the years. I've probably got a 1,000 comics to read there. Even though they are great deals, does anyone ever get around to reading these?

I've also taken advantage of the increased number of hoopla downloads available (It went from 8 to 25 then back down to 15.). In addition, I'm going through my physical backlog of comics. Hopefully I'll be all caught up by the time my shop reopens. If this keeps up for a while, I may also reorganize and catalog all my physical comics. But that's won't be allowed until I finish all the chores around the house my wife has mentioned.

I heard Marvel and DC have both put their new comics on hold.
Is that correct?
I imagine Disney is worried about the future of movies, of theme parks, of cruises..
Of comics, maybe not so much.

Marvel finally announced today that they have put new comics on hold digitally as well as physically. DC continues to be jerks even without Dan Didio and said they will continue to release comics digitally. It does look like their weekly comics have been pushed back though and it's just trades that are coming out tomorrow.

I am almost through my backlog of titles from the library, but as I have been increasing my time on videogames I have not really seen much of an increase in books. It's about the same.

Normally I insist on physical copies of books, but because of the quarantine, I am using Hoopla although I feel I am cheating on my comic book store. When I voted for this month's BotM, I chose Fables since it was on Hoopla and I could actually read it if chosen.

Well, I was bored enough today that I actually went out and did some gardening.

I usually read comics digitally only and manga in physical form. I have a massive manga backlog, as I'm also a collector, so I'll be entertained for a long time. Anything I don't have, I can use my library's digital offerings or just buy it online. I'm having a really hard time focusing on reading though.

When I'm this anxious, I don't know what to do with myself (drawing or coloring helps). I have a massive backlog of games on Steam for when I need mindless gaming (which I've been doing everyday lol) I've always been a total introvert, so my life has barely changed.

For the last couple of weeks I've been overworked and unable to read very much, but I'm finally turning that around.

Without the library I've also changed my reading habits to move to digital. I'm trying out a Marvel Unlimited subscription, and I can also get titles digitally through my library.

I've also found that I'm more drawn to rereading favorites that have sat on my shelf, or I bought after reading from the library, but haven't actually read my own copy. With everything being so uncertain, reading an old favorite is sometimes easier and more comforting than a book with an unknown ending.

Hi Mike! I'm reading SO much more than I expected. I'm catching up on Jason Aaron's Thor, Tom Taylor's Spider-Man, Waid's Black Widow, and excited to start Ahmed's Ms Marvel. Rowell's Runaways is a huge favorite, but I'm caught up on trades so those issues are released once a month. I'm also catching up on/rereading big X-Men events, so I can finally get to House of X/Powers of X. I wish the interface was more intuitive, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with it. Are you using Marvel Unlimited?

Unfortunately my library doesn't support comic books through Hoopla (aargh) and of the Big Two I prefer Marvel to DC.
