Absalom, Absalom!
question
What is the most difficult Faulkner?

I've read a few of Faulkner's but this one really gave me trouble. That is until I started reading it out loud.
Now it's beautiful.
Anyone else any ideas of WF?

For some reason the sound and the fury gave me the most trouble. Perhaps I was not reading it as alertly and missed a few things like two people being named caddy. Absalom Absalom was easily my favorite because I think it captures all of his themes and looks both forward and backward in his career. Some of the most insightful perspectives on race and history are contained in the narrative.
In terms of a whole novel, "Absalom, Absalom!" is the most difficult Faulkner. Certainly Parts I and II of "The Sound and the Fury" are very difficult, too, but Part I in particular clears up after multiple readings. An excellent start on Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County is "The Unvanquished." "As I Lay Dying" is also a Faulkner that can be read relatively quickly and provide an intro and feel for him as a writer.
Both "Absalom, Absalom!" and "The Sound and the Fury" stand up to multiple readings - they get richer each time, in my opinion. But I'm something of a Faulkner nut; I think he's the greatest American writer ever and among the top handful - ever.
My two cents on both:
