Welcome to Christian Speculative Fiction’s SIXTH REVIEW SESSION!

Hi everyone. With Steve’s blessing, I’m heading this review session. Perhaps with our current world situation, we can use this time in a productive manner.

We will begin this session approximately two weeks from today. Please invite any author and/or reader who might be interested in participating in this Review Session.

Once the Review session begins, as before, we’ll complete the session in two phases, with each lasting 4 weeks.

Some Guidelines (Some parts from Steve Pillinger's Review Session One):

1. This is not a discussion thread. It is simply to organise and co-ordinate our review session together. (After the reviews have been done, consider opening a discussion thread, or threads, to talk about any of the books we’ve been reading)

2. The Aim:

a. NOT to pat one another’s backs! This is not a mutual admiration society. Yes, we hope that being reviewed by our fellow Christian spec. fic. fans will reduce the likelihood of low ratings due to the reviewer not being on the same wavelength.

b. But that does not mean that we avoid telling it like it is. We’re looking for sympathetic but honest reviews that will not only increase our review totals (and hopefully our average ratings), but will also help hone our writing skills by making us aware of areas for improvement.

c. But while being honest, we don’t want to go to the other extreme of only pointing out the faults in a book. Remember that for each author among us, their book is a much-loved act of sub-creation on which they have lavished days, weeks, months of painstaking care. A simple rule of thumb is: For every negative comment you make, include a positive one as well.

3. The Commitment:

a. Joining in this session involves a commitment to write two reviews within a two month period (one review per month).

b. Failing to do so will not only let the authors down, but will also undermine what we as a group are trying to achieve. If you find yourself unable to complete one or other of your reviews, please be aware that it is your responsibility to find a replacement reviewer—and to inform us in this thread of the change, including the GR profile link of your replacement.

4. The Nuts & Bolts:

a. There will be 2 rounds, one beginning Monday, April 20 and the other to begin Monday, May 25. Each of us will complete one review per round.
**All reviews for Round One are due Monday, 18 May
**Round Two reviews should be submitted by Monday, 22 June to close out the session.

b. Depending on the number of authors and non-author readers that commit to this review session, I will designate the review pairings (without any two people reviewing each other, which is prohibited by GR). If we can get enough interested people involved, it is my hope that the two-month session will allow for 3 reviews for each book presented.

5. How Participants Will Receive the Book to Read to Review:
Since there are wide discrepancies in cost between different books—and not everyone subscribes to KU—it will be the responsibility of the author to contact his or her reviewers and work out how to get them a free review copy. If the book is on KU and they can read it there, fine. Alternatively, the author can ask for the reviewer’s email address and send them a file (mobi, epub or pdf), or provide a link for them to obtain a free Kindle version.

6. Where to Post Reviews:

a. Once review completed, the reviewer will post it to Goodreads and to Amazon (preferably both the US and UK sites).

b. Reviewer will also post links to all 3 reviews in this thread to share with the author/group.

c. Only reviews of 3 stars or higher should be posted. If a book cannot reach that threshold, please complete a review and submit it directly to the author (and also a copy to myself so I have a record of your effort and response) giving truthful and constructive feedback on why the novel doesn’t meet your expectations.

7. Please note that the only acceptable response from an author to a reviewer is “Thank you.” Authors should never enter into a dispute with a reviewer about things they disagree with in their review. If they feel strongly that the review and rating are unfair, they should contact me as moderator, not the reviewer.

8. Authors Submitting Books for Review: Please Note:
Your copy should be either published or about to be published. The version you submit for review must be as if you were submitting to an agent or publisher—ready to go, free of errors as much as possible, and complete. It should not be an advance reader copy that is to be edited at a later time.

9. Notes About Pairings:

a. Authors are requested to let me know in the thread below if you are interested in your book being reviewed. I’ll give approximately two weeks for people to see this thread.

b. If you know of an author or author group (with leanings toward Speculative Christian Fiction), please do share and invite both authors and readers.

c. As authors come forward to submit their books for review, my request is that you let us know in the thread if you've read any of the books being offered. This will go a long way in helping me when the books are assigned.

How to Write a Review

For some of you this may be the first time you’ve written a review on Goodreads. Others may know the mechanics, but be unsure about what to write. Here are some tips:

One of our previous writers, Justin Coogle, posted a good outline elsewhere in this group. It’s repeated here for convenience:

1) General Impression - "How did you feel before reading it? How did you feel after? Lasting feelings? (Sad it's over, happy it's done, bittersweet, etc)."

2) Characters - "Favorite one, least favorite, most interesting, most unpredictable, etc."

3) Plot - "Favorite twists, was it generic? Was it unique? Did you enjoy where it went? What would you have done instead?"

4) Themes - "What themes were obvious? What themes did you THINK you felt the author was going for? Favorite themes? Least favorite?"

5) World Building - "Was the universe memorable? Forgettable? What was your favorite part of the world building (weapons, architecture, people, races, societal structure, languages, etc). Would you want to see more? What more are you excited to see?"

6) Seek to Give a Fair Review – Highlight positives and what you liked at the beginning of your review. Share constructive feedback as well.

7) Avoid Spoilers! Consider Steve Pillinger’s words here:

"If you knew who the killer was on page 2, fine, say, 'I knew who the killer was by page two.' But do NOT say, 'I knew by page two that the butler was the killer.' If you feel your review will be seriously hampered if you can’t talk about the solution to certain mystery, or reveal an unexpected plot twist, then put a large notice at the beginning saying 'SPOILER ALERT'".

Above all, have fun! In writing these reviews we are really helping each other hopefully become better writers. Iron sharpening iron is good; iron piercing a heart, not so good. Be gracious, truthful, and helpful.

I’m new to moderating on Goodreads. Please be patient with me as I adjust and learn as we go along.

Thank you so much.

-Sean Elliot Russell

This is our Sixth Review Session! Welcome!

Please read all of this post (do not skim) so you understand all points related to this Review Session.

●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●

REVIEWERS PLEASE READ before RATING:

To All Reviewers: When you rate a book, please take into account the different meanIngs of 3 stars on Goodreads and Amazon.

On GOODREADS: 3 Stars means "liked it" (move mouse over the stars in a 3-5tar review to see this). So 3 stars on Goodreads is a positive review.

But on AMAZON, 3 stars is just an average: the reviewer neither liked it nor disliked it. Which translates as a negative for customers. When was the last time you bought a 3-star rated novel?

●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●

PLEASE remember the above when giving your reviews on Goodreads & Amazon.

If possible, please give reviews on both Amazon.com & Amazon.co.uk. Thank you so much!

■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■

Veteran authors to this group: you may see 3 asterisks beside your name. This means you will receive 2 reviews but I am searching for new readers to join in the session. The asterisks show up only at the SUMMARIES section.

I am included in this list but will wait for all others to receive their third reader before I receive such.

(I will do all I can to find new readers to get THIRD reviews for you but I obviously cannot guarantee; I'll do my best.)

For Round One, please be in contact with the author/reviewer-reader in the next 3 days to receive a copy of the author's work.

HOW TO CONTACT:
1. Look for their posting within this Sixth Review Session thread.
2. Click on their NAME which will bring you to their profile.
3. There is a downward-facing arrow by profile picture which should allow you to SEND MESSAGE.
4. Some profiles' privacy settings may prevent this. If so, please be patient and wait for the person to contact you.
5. Any troubles, please let myself or any moderator know. Thank you.

PLEASE NOTE:
It is not the author's obligation to buy/send you a print edition copy. This review process should not cost a penny to anyone.

E-books may not be everyone's cup of tea but
1. it's easy & free to send,
2. it saves a tree, and
3. it's less stress.

If it is possible for the author to send you a print copy, that's fine. But please try not to cause anyone to be burdened or spend unnecessarily.

Thank you for joining with us in this Review Session Adventure.

if you have a friend or family member who would enjoy reading one of the above novels, please get them to INBOX me and I'll add them!

Be kind in your reviews but honest. Aim to encourage and be thoughtful in how you share your feedback. Build up in the midst of any demolishing.

And if the book genre/style isn't to your initial liking, please try your best to be open-minded and let the novel stand on its own terms.

Have fun!

Hey Sean, thanks so much for setting this up!

I'd like to kick off by submitting my book The Restorers The Restorers (Mindrulers, #2) by Steve Pillinger for review.

It's been a long while since we've had one of these sessions. I hope there will be plenty of others out there who will join in either as authors with a book for review, or as readers who'll be happy to enjoy some of the great Christian speculative fiction represented in this group!

About my own book, I should maybe add that The Restorers is actually the second in a series. If you like, as a total optional extra you'd be very welcome to read the first one as well—The Mindruler.

R.J. Gilbert (rjagilbert) | 41 comments Thanks for this opportunity.
I would like to submit my latest book, "The Binding" for review:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5....

This book is a bit of a genre-bender but it definitely fits well into the "speculative fiction" category. Part adventure, part romance, part supernatural thriller, it follows a professional art thief and a museum historian who want nothing to do with each other but keep waking up together every morning as though they are married (and yes, this is a clean, Christian story) thanks to the power of a strange relic they are both fighting over.

I'm also open for reviewing if that is needed. Thanks again.

This is my first time doing this. I would like to offer my book for review: Gods They Had Never Known
Gods They Had Never Known by J.S. Helms

It is a fictional retelling of Genesis 6: 1-4. This was a violent time period so the book does contain violence.

Thank you!

Hi Chris,
The first part of the session runs from either 20 April or 27 April ending four weeks later. Whoever your reviewer is, we'll ask them to post after May 6 which I think should be fine. What is the name of your new book, Chris?

So glad you are joining in our next review session!

At the moment we have 13, possibly 14, authors which is fantastic!

We'll give until next Sunday, 19 April, to get more authors/readers onboard. Exciting!

All pairings will be made by Monday, 20 April, which will be the official start. That first round will run until Sunday, 17 May (last of reviews due on that day.)

The second round would run from Monday, 18 May until Sunday, 21 May (when reviews will be due).

Please let friends (and fans?) know this Review Session is happening. Readers are also very welcome, and of course, other authors.

Thanks, everyone! -Sean

If you're wanting to take part as a reader rather than an author (i.e., you don't have a book of your own that you're wanting to offer for review), then you just indicate your interest here (which you've done), and as Sean has said on Monday he will put up a list of pairings for each round: i.e. we'll all be told which two books we are to read and review over the 2-month period.

(It's necessary to do it this way rather than allowing a free for all, so that all the books do get reviewed, that people don't end up re-reading books they've already reviewed, and to make sure there are no reciprocal reviews (x reviews y and y reviews x), which is against Goodread's rules.)

Hi Ian,
Thank you for showing your interest.

The review session works as follows (feel free to ask any questions for clarification):

The Sixth Review Session consists of TWO ROUNDS. Each round lasts 4 weeks for a total of 8 weeks (first session begins Monday).

I will pair books with readers/reviewers (all pairings for the two rounds/two months will be revealed on Monday).

Books will be paired in such a way to avoid review swaps.

Each Round: By the end of the 4-week period, we ask readers/reviewers to have read the book appointed to them and post a review on Goodreads and Anazon.com or Amazon.co.uk.

(Please see first post in this thread to read instructions on how to give a review and what to do if the book you read doesn't reach 3-stars ).

So altogether, each reader will review two books in total, one review Rd1, one review Rd2.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

Please let me know by Sunday night if you are interested in joining in. Just a message here is all that's needed to get you onbosrd.

Kind regards,
Sean Elliot Russell

Hi Andrew!
Thank you for joining with us! Your book is now entered in our 6th Review Session.

I'll keep in mind your stipulations about paperback copies being provided. Hopefully, that won't be a problem. Will do our best to work with you.

All the best,
Sean Elliot Russell

Hello Everyone!
Thank you for such an enthusiastic response to our Sixth Review Session!

We have 15 authors, 3, possibly 4, readers. This is exciting!

Late tonight, early tomorrow, the LIST OF PAIRINGS for Round One and Round Two will be posted (look for it at the top of this thread).

I'll give until 6 p.m. tonight, Greenwich Mean Time, for any other readers/authors to join in. After that, it may not be possible, but of course, I'll do my best.

Ian McGarry, please let me know if you wish to participate in this review session. Hope to hear from you as I want you to join us.

Speak soon!

-Sean Elliot Russell

The Pairings for ROUND ONE & TWO are posted above!

However, READERS are still needed.

At present, we have 8 authors/books that need a third reader/reviewer (3 of these are new authors to this group who have been prioritized).

The Sixth Review Session is closed to new books/authors, but if you are interested in being a reader, please leave a message or INBOX me.

Any new authors can let me know their interest and will be added to the Seventh Review Session beginning end of June.

Kindest regards to everyone!
Sean

Thank you Anne. That's really kind of you.

So Anne, as per Message Two above, I have you down for the following:

Rd1: Jes Drew's "Red as Blood"

Rd2: Andrew M. Seddon's "Farhope"
& Tessa Stockton's "Remnant: Court of the Giants"

Thank you, Anne!
Sean

P.S. If anyone else is interested in a third book to read, please let me know. No pressure; only if its possible/not too much for you.

I am usually a pretty quick reader and would be willing to review another book.

Hello everyone,
A big thanks to J.S. Helms who has also agreed to read a third novel. I have added Julie during Rd2 to read D. John's novel, DACLAXVIA Bk 1: Nascent". Thanks Julie!

And I also want to thank Kala Barnett for agreeing to read/review Jes Drew's novella, "Red as Blood" also during Rd2.

We have a great community here!

Hello Chris,
Thanks for your help!

I have added you to Rd2 to read/review Peter Kazmaier's “Dragon of Sheol” as Ian's involvement isn't for sure. If Ian comes onboard, it'll be easy to match him up with one of you veterans needing a third reviewer.

Thanks again, Chris! Blessings to you!
Sean
