What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read it probably about 1971-1973 but it could be from the 1950's or 1960's. Poor farmer boy walks to school a long distance and never misses even one day. School was rural but the boy was from far out in the country side. Seemed to be mountainous South America. Boy wore a rain poncho made of grass. Medium format picture book (for older kids than a board book but not a chapter book).

Was it illustrated, or did it have photographs of a real boy?

It was illustrated. My memory was that it was not a true story. No photos. Thanks.
