Aymen Ben cheikh I love to listen to music while i m walking, working out, driving, working. But when i read i feel that i go inside the story, and i think that music would pull me back to reality.

Aymen Ben cheikh Arnis, do you have any other superpower beside reading and listening to audiobooks at the same time. Wow!

message 8: by Arnis (new)

Arnis (poseidons99) doesn't everyone do that? :D

message 9: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 2434 comments I love music, especially classic rock. I love to sing and dance. That's why I can't listen to music when I read. I'd hear a song, start jiggling my foot, and then lose my place in the book.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 1127 comments I often listen to music to inspire a certain mood before writing. George Ezra and Sam Smith are favourites for that at the moment.

I always play music when drawing or painting; the louder and heavier the better.

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) (sandyj21) | 5101 comments Depends on my mood, but if I am listening to music while I am reading it will be Jack Johnson, Norah Jones, Lilly Allen, Blues Brothers, Pokey LaFarge. 8:D

message 13: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 1127 comments I'd find myself singing along to all of your picks, Sandra.

Dawn G | 692 comments I like it quiet when I read. I like to feel what I am reading and noise distracts me.
Music is another of my passions and when I am truly listening to music that is all that I do. I listen with headphones and close my eyes. Just as I like to research new authors and books on the internet, I do the same with musical artists.

I will definitely let you know, Sean. I'm looking forward to finding fresh new music!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I love music and have a good sized digital collection. Have a thing for collection film scores.

As for reading and music and TV...doesn't really mix for me. I love them all enjoyed on their own. For reading I usually listen to rainymood.com

message 26: by Freda (new)

Freda Malone | 418 comments I'm going to tell a short story about this particular subject, so if you feel you have to roll your eyes at me, skip this. Just call me an enthusiastic participator. :D

I'm deaf, but I haven't always been deaf. I still 'listen' to music because I feel the beat (the bass thumps the floor) and I read other peoples lips while the music is playing. With this in mind, I am unable to listen to music while I'm reading a really good suspenseful mystery novel, or more so a thriller. Believe me, I've tried.

As I sit in my chair, can you imagine me reading one of Stephen King's novels and the 'thump' comes at a time I am the most terrified in the story? The first time I tried it, I nearly ran myself into a closet because I swore it was "Johnny"!! I'm a jumper, what can I say?

I fear what I can't clearly and accurately hear coming. If you heard a thump, it would sound like something you're probably familiar with. The heater kicking in, the dogs nails sliding across the floor. Your brain would be able to distinguish the sound. All I 'feel' is a thump, bump, boom type vibration that can not tell my brain what it is. I even sleep with a night light because should I ever feel a 'thump' while I'm sleeping, I have to SEE what it is in order to tell my brain and my fast beating heart, it's okay, or not okay (after I get up and investigate the sound). I really have no choice but to get up each time because the one time I 'think' it's the dog jumping from the couch, it could actually be something much more dangerous, the doors been kicked in. Hearing people wouldn't have to get up necessarily because they'd be able to figure it out just by way it sounds. LUCKY YOU!! haha.

So all in all, I really like the silence better while I read. If I feel like music, I'll put my book away and put in a CD. At that point, I know what's coming. :)

Very often read and write with music playing smd it can be literally anything. Sean, I see you listed Camel. What a guitarist Andrew Latimer is!

message 32: by Skye (new)

Skye | 636 comments In the past, I needed silence in order to read and music whenever I wrote: now the television is on while I read, and I still listen to music when I write; music sometimes is my writing inspiration; it reflects who I am at that moment in time.

Craig "NEEDS MORE DAMN TIME TO READ !!!!" I usually need absolute peace and quiet when reading but obviously there are times when you can't have that. I have been looking into things I could listen too whilst reading to block out the outside. I love Heavy metal so that won't work haha. I love Classical too which seems to work but eventually my concentration drifts to the piece I'm hearing, I can't win :)

message 46: by Skye (new)

Skye | 636 comments I know, Craig; I have the same problem; I'm easily distracted and I do like classical.

Craig "NEEDS MORE DAMN TIME TO READ !!!!" Skye, have you tried white noise or something similar to relaxation sounds? Didn't work for me unfortunately :(
