Trisha (trishabisen) | 2389 comments This thread is to discuss Guards! Guards!, the eighth book in the Discworld Series by Terry Pratchett.

Pages: 376 pages

Length: 1 Month (May)

Participants: Marc, RJ, Scott. Sinisa, Sonsoles.

Everyone reads at their own pace during a Buddy Read. Because participants can be at different parts of the book at different times, it is extremely important to mark spoilers so that the book is not ruined for someone who is not as far along as others!!!

Mark spoilers by placing {spoiler} before the text and {/spoiler} after the text but use the < and > instead of the { and }.

Happy Buddy Reading!

Sonsoles (sonsoles190) | 112 comments Last month I skipped the Pyramids one, I'm not reading much with the quarantine and I preferred to finished the books that I had already started, but since we are going back to normal here in Spain, I hope I go back to normal too and I can make it this month =)

Marc *Dark Reader with a Thousand Young! Iä!* (marcthedarc) | 660 comments Sonsoles! Welcome back! What is this "normal" you speak of? haha

Hahahaha being able to focus on something and not having to struggle to read a single page.

I think it has to do with me working from home; having the work and the leisure in the same places makes me not to be able to disconnect from work and I spend the day working and with my mind in work... =/ what comes to my mind is that I am not going to enjoy whatever I try to read and it's gonna be time wasted, so better using the time on something productive, so I'd fell less bad.

I used to read everyday, at least 30 mins, while having breakfast. Nowadays I start working or doing things related to work.

But I hope that now that we can go out more and in 2 weeks some cafes are going to start getting open, I'll be able do something more than staying in the house and be able to focus again and enjoy reading.

Sinisa | 385 comments I have read like 30% so far and this one is awesome !

Marc *Dark Reader with a Thousand Young! Iä!* (marcthedarc) | 660 comments I finally started... May has been a drag of a reading month so far, up until now it felt like I would never get to the books I wanted to fit in, but I guess there are still 11 days remaining. I was tied up with two loooong fantasy books and a shorter e-book loan that I had to keep switching between for various reasons. I like to finish books at a steady clip so going over 2 weeks with mutiple books still in progress was a reading hardship. Oh, woe was me. Big problems, I know.

Anyway, I am so happy to have started this (really just started, I haven't even gotten to Carrot's introduction). This stands out as the first Discworld book to NOT open on a cosmic view of A'Tuin and the Disc as a whole.

Sinisa | 385 comments I finished like 5 days ago and since last comment things are basically the same, book is awesome from start to finish, great story, a lot of the characters were so lovable, so many funny moments and that sort of open ending was like a cherry on top. One of funny things i liked and that isn't a spoiler is failed attempt of preparing tee on that super hot thingy, I could have seen that picture in my head. I think this could be the best book in a series so far or in worst case No2.

Marc *Dark Reader with a Thousand Young! Iä!* (marcthedarc) | 660 comments I'm looking forward to re-meeting Fred Colon. My sense of him got lost over time, and he was overshadowed by the nobbiness of his partner Nobby Nobbs in later books, I think.

Sinisa | 385 comments @ Marc
Oh so we have more Nobby in the future, was one of my thoughts that we could have used him more in this book, he had a lot more potential but saving him for later is great.

Sinisa | 385 comments Was going back trough quotes and found this gem:

“I believe you find life such a problem because you think there are good people and bad people. You're wrong, of course. There are, always and only, the bad people, but some of them are on opposite sides.”
― Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!

Marc *Dark Reader with a Thousand Young! Iä!* (marcthedarc) | 660 comments Good quote!

I am about 75% done and will tey to finish today. I feel like Vimes tranditioned from heavy drinking to not too easily, but they addressed this with the "Knurd" idea.

If you keep the chances to exactly a million to one it just might work today...

Okay I wasn't at that part yet, but now I get it.

Easily the best Discworld book so far (in publication order), but still not quite showing that "wow" factor that I am looking for in the climax. I think it was undercut by what was essentially three people acting like idiots on a roof in an extended gag that ultimately did not contribute to the story.

But, it was hilarious. I could not stop laughing during Carrot's first scene with his father, especially. Great musings on human nature with how the citizenry reacted to events. Great Librarian usage.
