NOTE: I am heading out of town and will probably not have internet access until next weekend --- so I will answer any questions then.
For the popular book issue: go to Explore on the homepage, then select Popular. Then click the 'by year' tab on the right side, and enter 2014.
New Releases is in the list on the right column. Hope that helps.

The link should work now --- GR changed their URLs for the new year ;-)
Yes, you can use a proper name that is more than 6 letters....but it must be in the title not the author's name.

I will join this challenge, it sounds fun!

Should one list the names of the books for this challenge at one go in the Reporting Thread or the books could be added as and when I read them - i.e. before the end of January 2015?
Please help me. Thanks.

As Jayme said, if you look above the comment box (where you are typing) there is the text add book/author. When adding, if you look at the bottom of the pop up box, you can see a radio button to chose the title or cover of the book.
It is recommended that you don't post everything at once. You can post a thread for each book, but keep a running total from post to post. Check out the reporting thread to see how others do it.

Yes --- all the books that you read will count for the 2015 Goodreads challenge. For that challenge, you just mark them read with the date and it will tally them up.
For our mini-challenge, any books you read can also be used for other challenges in this group or any other group.

I would look on the genre page of the the book to determine how to place it. The main tags are determined by readers but that's good enough.
How this challenge works:
Each book read must touch at least one task from at least one of the category lists below. Each book can have multiple tasks counted, if eligible, but no duplicates. (If there are two of the same thing, points are only counted once.)
GENERAL RULES:
Participants may join at any time during the challenge. The challenge last from January 1st until January 31th, 2015.
1) Books must be at least 200 pages long. Eligibility for this is determined by the most popular edition on Goodreads. If the most popular edition is 197 pages, it will not count, even if the edition read is 215 pages.
2) ALL points must be reported by 11:59pm EST on January 31th, 2015 to be counted.
3) Re-reads and audiobooks are accepted. Audiobook page counts will be determined by the most popular edition on Goodreads.
SCORING:
***Please report all points in the Reporting Points Thread***
4) To obtain points your book must touch at least one task in one or more of the challenge categories. Each item underneath the category is worth one point unless otherwise noted. Categories and items can be repeated as many times as you want throughout the course of the challenge, but cannot be duplicated for a single book. It is your responsibility to tell us what items came up in your book.
For the mini-challenge, you can claim multiple points in each category. For the time period and locale setting categories, action must take place at the specific setting at some point during the book.
5) Bonus points will be awarded based on the length of each book read (number of pages determined by most popular GoodReads edition), as follows:
200 to 300 pages = 2 bonus points
301 to 500 pages = 4 bonus points
501 to 750 pages = 6 bonus points
751 to 1,000 pages = 8 bonus points
1,000+ = 10 bonus points
Bonus points will be awarded PER BOOK READ.
6) Cover requirements will be determined by the most popular edition on Goodreads. When claiming the cover requirements, please choose the display cover option when linking to your book.
7) HAVE FUN!!!
