Jeff | 8 comments Hey guys, I'm currently reading "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr, loving it so far, and I am finding several passages that I would like to highlight or call out so I can reference them later in some way. If I am reading on my Kindle, I use the "highlight" feature, but I have never actually underlined a passage in a physical book before. I am sure that at least some of you run into this conundrum, so what do you do?
I'm debating underlining the actual passage and "dog-earring" the page, but that seems like such defilement to a nice hardcover book. I could go out and get sticky notes to stick in there so I don't have to do any physical damage, but I still would want some way to note the actual passage itself. If anybody could give me some recommendations on how to handle this situation, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Type the quotes here into favorite quotes part of GoodReads.
Sometimes I have a piece of paper that I'll put a short hand (p 322, 2P, 1S) so I can go back and find it. Translation page 322, 2nd paragraph, first sentence.)

I've used post it notes, too, but I have plenty. (Sometimes books come in for the library booksale full of post-its. Guess what happens to them?

Jeff | 8 comments Thanks Linda, I should use that feature on Goodreads!

Having grown up in Catholic schools where we were not allowed to write in books, I take pleasure in underlining and highlighting in my own books. It makes them special and puts my imprint on them. Mostly, I read on my Kindle and use the highlighting feature. Didn't know about the service on Goodreads.

If you have a smartphone and the Evernote app, you can take a photo of the page and save it in Evernote. Evernote gives you the option of taking a photo and saving it as a document - which allows you to copy, paste, highlight, etc. This is something I've done when it's a library book/book I can't mark up for some reason.

Antonia (toniclark) | 70 comments I share Jeff's reluctance to mark up my books. I sometimes dictate passages I want to copy to my iPhone (e.g., in a note or email message). But I didn't know about this Evernote feature which sounds great! Thanks, Trina! I'll try it out.

Antonia (toniclark) | 70 comments PS: All the Light We Cannot See was my favorite fiction read last year.

Gerald Miller | 821 comments When I dabbled in collecting Folio books they made it clear that marking books, using bookmarks of any kind were no no's for keeping books. I try not to do it.Ironically the only book I mark with a pencil is my Bible. Also I found out that touching old books not wearing gloves was a good idea because the oil from your hand helps the cover.

Antonia (toniclark) | 70 comments Can't get the Evernote app to work on the iPhone (latest IOS). It won't open or allow me to log in. That'll take some further investigation. . . . Any hints, Trina?

Trina | 14 comments Toni - I don't have a problem with the Evernote app on my iPhone, but I think I'm an version behind you. Have you tried deleting it and reinstalling from scratch?

Antonia (toniclark) | 70 comments I did try that. Will contact tech support. Thanks!

I've been doing this lately. It's my intent going forward to keep far fewer books that I've already read. Really just the absolute favorites. So underlining in the book, or using post-its, won't work. If I know I'm definitely keeping the book (admitedly not something I often know until partway through or even finished) I definitely have no problem marking up the physical book. It makes it more mine!

Gerald Miller | 821 comments Since we are in tech talk I was wondering what you guys think of ONE NOTE from Microsoft ?

message 14: by Antonia (new)

Antonia (toniclark) | 70 comments I got Evernote to work on my iPhone! But haven't yet figured out how to copy, paste, highlight, etc. I'll keep tinkering.

Haven't used One Note.

Gerald Miller | 821 comments I don't have the patience or learning ability to use or understand things like Evernote or one note. I like things I can see and understand right off.

Lisa R. | 43 comments These are great ideas. I never thought to use Evernote for this purpose or the Goodreads quotes area. Guess I'm going to need to keep the phone close while reading.
