TIDELANDS BY PHILIPPA GREGORY
FAIRMILE SERIES BOOK 1

The Tidelands of the title is Sealsea Island, a marshy area on the coast of Sussex. It is a place of mists and shifting sands. Treacherous tides and pools can trap and drown with no warning…

It is 1648 and trying to earn a living in this landscape is Alinor, a mother of 2 children. Crushed by poverty, she is a midwife, grows herbs for medicine and finds labouring wherever she can. Her position is made even worse as she is neither a wife nor a widow. Her husband has disappeared which leaves her vulnerable and viewed with suspicion by her neighbours.
Chancing upon a priest who is lost among the marshes, she helps him to his destination at the manor of the local landowner, a Catholic family. However, these are very dangerous times because, over the water on the Isle of Wight Charles 1 is waiting for his fate in prison.

As the story unfolds, Alinor and her family are swept up in a whirlpool of events as treacherous as the Tidelands around them….
