Cider with Rosie is a 1959 book by Laurie Lee (published in the US as Edge of Day: Boyhood in the West of England, 1960). It is the first book of a trilogy that continues with As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969) and A Moment of War(1991). It has sold over six million copies worldwide.

The novel is an account of Lee's childhood in the village of Slad, Gloucestershire, England, in the period soon after the First World War. It chronicles the traditional village life which disappeared with the advent of new developments, such as the coming of the motor car, and relates the experiences of childhood seen from many years later. (231 pages)

I have read all three books and enjoyed them all. My favourite is the middle book in the trilogy.

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... | 164 comments My library has the audiobook but my hold may be too long to get to it in May.

This is a two month read so hopefully you will get it in June, Kelly.

Kathy E | 2349 comments I'll be reading this but probably in June.

Kathy E | 2349 comments I’ve started this book and it’s lovely. Lee’s childhood reminds me of my own even though mine was 50 years later.

Manybooks | 610 comments I might consider the entire trilogy.

I've read all three books and enjoyed them all. I have a hard time deciding which is my favourite-book 2 or book 3.

Georgina (georgiet29) | 250 comments I really enjoyed this too and will be adding the next books to my list

Kathy E | 2349 comments I've finished the book and enjoyed it. I've added the two other books to my TBR.

I loved Lee's description of his mother, who was lovely but also difficult to live around. The descriptions of the activities of the seasons of the year were also moving. One thing that jarred me was Lee's chapter (view spoiler)l

I completely agree, the way he wrote of his mother really touched me.
I also found the other chapter disturbing.
There are some aspects of his book that make me wish I had been born a century earlier and others that make me realise how lucky I am to be here now!

Kathy E | 2349 comments Exactly, Georgina! I love reading about the early 20th century, especially before World War I, but I don't think I'd really want to live during that time.
