Luke Simons | 12 comments Naomi and Beth and others looking for Christian fantasy, and those looking for fantasy similar to C.S. Lewis, I have a recommendation. I have published the first book on Amazon about a young man who has to fight his way back to his throne, a throne he was anointed and appointed for. The book is called "A Kingdom in Crisis."

https://www.amazon.com/Kingdom-Crisis...

I apologize if this is not the right forum to place this in, but I wanted to share it.

Mel Cat | 2 comments For contemporary reads, I would recommend Broke(n) by S.T. Jones which is a good read. It’s about a homeless woman who gets off the streets and have to navigate her new life.

Also, for historical fiction, I would recommend Karen Kingsbury’s One Tuesday Morning series! It’s an interesting (fictional) take on 9/11.

This is a genre I'm exploring too so curious to see others ideas.

Lynette Eason has some good ones! I liked the second, third and fourth books in her Danger Never Sleeps series, but most people liked the first one, too. I also liked the first one in her Extreme Measures series and want to read the others.

It seems like most of the 'horses and cowboys' books I've read recently have been either historicals, or in the 'Love Inspired' line of books (as far as modern day cowboys), which I'm not sure has as much depth as you might want considering the KK novel tackled some pretty deep topics. I'll keep thinking about it, and maybe someone else can point you in a better direction!

message 122: by Ash Nicole (new)

Ash Nicole | 15 comments Yeah that’s what I have found too, Kate. I’ve tried to read historical westerns but they’re just not my cup of tea. The depth of A Thousand Tomorrow’s was one of the things I liked best about it. Thanks for the input!

message 123: by Sarita (new)

Sarita | 2288 comments Any suggestions for the following criteria would be welcomed :-)

April's genre is April: American Civil War > point-of-view characters from both the Union and the Confederacy.

This means the rule is that the book must include at least one point of view character on the Union side of the war AND at least one point of view character on the Confederacy side of the war.

One example is Gilbert Morris's Bonnets and Bugles series, in which Jeff and Leah are on opposite sides of the war. It's told in omniscient style, so both perspectives are given.

Other examples could be books in which a Union nurse takes care of a Confederate soldier OR a pair of brothers take up arms on opposite sides of the Mason Dixon line.

Please tell us who the POV characters are AND which side of the war they both represented.

Yankee in Atlanta (Heroines Behind the Lines, #3) by Jocelyn Green

Caitlin from New York travels to Atlanta in search of her brother

Noah supports the Confederacy

It's been many years since I read this book so I don't remember many details. I loved it though.

Missy | 937 comments These are some I have read and some still on my list -

The Rebel Bride (Daughter of the Mayflower, #10) by Shannon McNear She is from the South and treats Union soldiers in her home.

Traces of Mercy (Mercy Medallion Trilogy, #1) by Michael Landon Jr. She poses as Confederate soldier who loses her memory and he is a Union soldier. There are two books in this series that cover Mercy.

The Sentinels of Andersonville by Tracy Groot This takes place in a Southern Prisoner of War camp in Georgia which held 1000's of Union soldiers

To Whisper Her Name (Belle Meade Plantation, #1) by Tamera Alexander She lives on Belle Meade Plantation and he is Southern but chose to fight for the Union. This is also a series.

I'm not sure of any Christian fiction retellings of fairytales, but a good book that features a dad as a main character is Susie Finkbeiner's The Nature of Small Birds The Nature of Small Birds by Susie Finkbeiner .

Oh my gracious, yes! The Hagenheim series! I've not yet read any of them, but they've been on my TBR list for a while, and I was 'today years old' when I realised they're fairytale retellings! How did I not see that? lol

The series should probably be read in order... but I read it out of order first and still enjoyed it. If I had it to do over, I'd read them in order, though.

This isn't beneficial to you as of yet but I will be writing Christian fairytale retellings very soon!!! I just finished my first book. I have some minor editing left. Then, I'm writing another stand-alone but as soon as those are completed, I'm beginning my fairytale retelling series!

If anyone is interested in being the first to hear about it, then feel free to subscribe to my newsletter. https://taylermbrooks.wordpress.com (just scroll to the bottom of my homepage) There will be opportunities to get free books! I've already planned out the whole series and can hardly wait to begin!!

The Redwyn Chronicles series by Madisyn Carlin
(Also very much anticipating her Shattered Lands series, although I haven't started it yet)
The Once Upon a Western series by Rachel Kovaciny
Once Upon a Summer: Contemporary Retellings of Timeless Tales by Andrea Boyd and others
Once Upon a Christmas: Contemporary Retellings of Timeless Tales by Andrea Boyd and others
All The Queen's Sons by Elizabeth Kipps
Our Christmas Bear by Sarah Brazytis
Doctor and King by Camille Esther
Corral Nocturne by Elisabeth Grace Foley
Beyond the Horizon by Jesseca Wheaton
Waltz into the Waves: A Cinderella Story by Sarah Holman
The Once Upon a Duchy series by Rachel Rossano
The Lady of Lanaria by Michaela Bush
"The Man on the Buckskin Horse" by Rachel Kovaciny and "Out of the Tomb" by Ashley Stangl in the Five Magic Spindles collection (I haven't read the others in the book due to personal convictions about magical fantasy)

If anyone's interested in more, I have a "retellings" shelf (not all fairytales) that you're welcome to check out. :)
