Hello Members,

This thread is designed to help group members participating on any of our threads, any of our challenges, the 50 Books Read in any given year, readathons, Book of the Month, Buddy Read, and any Spotlighted discussions with the mandated citation formats. We are always here to help you with this and in no time you will know exactly how to do them. This thread will tell you - (focusing specifically on citations) - which ones are required within the discussions and when they are not.

For all other threads outside of book discussions - "all citations are always required" on all threads as part of our longstanding rules and guidelines. It helps the readers, it helps the moderators, it helps the goodreads software populate our site and threads properly and it helps you.

Outside of a formal book book discussion, citations are required for ALL AUTHORS AND ALL BOOKS MENTIONED ON ALL THREADS.

However, within a spotlighted, buddy read or book of the month discussion - the following is the citation criteria for all of the book discussion threads.

All, we do not have to do citations regarding the book or the author being discussed during the book discussion on the Spotlight, Book of the Month or Buddy Read discussion threads - nor do we have to cite any personage in the book being discussed while on the discussion threads related to these books being discussed during Spotlighted, Book of the Month, and Buddy Read discussions.

However if we discuss folks outside the scope of the book being discussed or another book is cited which is not the book and author discussed - then we do have to do that citation according to our citation rules. That makes it easier to not disrupt the discussion. Thank you.

As an example a full citation looks like the one below:

"book cover first, the word by second, author's photo third and author's link third"

Here is the example:

Becoming by Michelle Obama by Michelle Obama Michelle Obama

Note: In a citation for a particular book you want to mention, if the author's photo is not available, we simply add (no photo) at the end. In a citation for a particular book you want to mention, if the bookcover is not available then at the beginning of the citation where the book cover would be or should be - simply add (no image) at the very beginning followed by the book link since the book cover was discovered missing from goodreads, followed by the remainder of the required citation segments. Please do not add the blank icon as the missing bookcover - simply add (no image) the linkable book title text, followed by the word by, followed by the author's photo and ending with the author's link.

If you know that citations are required, please just follow the rules and guidelines. That makes it easier for all of us especially the moderators who are volunteers.

Remember, you do not need to get it right the first time - we will be there to help you along the way and show you the ropes. All we expect is for you to try to fix the citation or post the citation as required or "when asked". Thank you in advance for your cooperation in following the group's rules and guidelines. You will be an expert in no time and we appreciate your cooperation.

For the Book of the Month, Spotlighted, Buddy Reads and/or formal group discussions (those discussions with weekly non spoiler threads) - this is the criteria:

All, we do not have to do citations regarding the book or the author being discussed during the book discussion on the moderator led book discussion threads - nor do we have to cite any personage in the book being discussed while on the moderator led book discussion threads related to the specific book being discussed.

However if we discuss folks outside the scope of the book in this case - (the book being discussed in the Book of the Month, Spotlighted Book and/or Buddy read) or the member wants to post about another book which they then cite which is not the book and author discussed - then we do have to do that citation according to our citation rules. That makes it easier to not disrupt the discussion. Thank you.

Be mindful that the citation rule is in full force outside of the formal Book of the Month, Spotlighted Book, Buddy Read or other formal discussions which have weekly spotlighted threads. That means on all other threads all citations for book and authors cited are added at the bottom of the comment box. The 50 Books Read in any given year and the Personal Reading Lists threads all have required citations for both books and authors.

If you cite an author or a book that is not found in the book discussion and you do this on a specific discussion thread of a moderator led thread - you must do a proper citation like the one below:

Note: If you are citing an author or a book on any other thread of the History Book Club you must do a full citation for the book and author.

If it is a book:

Middlemarch by George Eliot by George Eliot George Eliot

If it is an author:

George Eliot George Eliot
