After the quarantine started I revived my Eve Online accounts to find out that now Discord is the chat of choice (10 years ago it was treamspeak) so I installed it. It works fine for me and moreover, there is a Hugo winners reading group that read Dune in April. I planned to ad our group there
I love the idea, but from personal experience Zoom yields more focused conversions. Without the camera on people tend to space out a lot.
I'd love giving it a go though.

I still prefer to go audio only on Zoom, exactly to be more at ease

Prefer no camera, but whatever. I guess I will have to stop sitting around in my PJs if we pick Zoom
I'm up for a Discord session.
How about we pick a buddy read for Discord. Something with potential for a good discussion.

My daughter uses Discord a lot, as a gamer and animation student (graduating next week!). I haven’t tried but I would. Most of my work meetings are done on Skype or Lifesize, only a couple have been on Zoom.
I think that there’s an inverse relationship between the time of isolation and people’s willingness to get on camera.

Hi again, I'm glad so many of you are open to trying! For the record, I was suggesting Discord because it's also a platform where you can just have ongoing text chatrooms, not just one-off video or audio calls.
Should I go ahead and create a server and post an invite here, or would you like to integrate this with the Hugo winners group you already mentioned, Z? (I think doing our own would be better, personally, so as not to hijack their project)

Okay, here is our discord server!!
It's a work in progress in terms of channels/organization, etc.
When the mods join, I'll swap over mod powers to you folks.

Feel free to join, everyone! We will be organising a discord discussion, so stay put!

Yeah, we're still there but Discord invitation links expire after a couple days. If anyone sees this at a later date and would like to join us there, let us know so we can send an updated invite.

Hi Sierra, please feel free to say a few words about yourself in the introduction thread. You've joined about a week or two ago but we haven't yet had the pleasure of getting to know you.

I think you can create a permanent link when you generate it. There should be an option to set the expiry time in smallprint underneath.

You're right, thanks for the tip!

Discord is an app for PC/mobile that allows for community to create multiple connected chatrooms. It was originally started as an online gaming communication platform, but it's evolved beyond that -- I'm in a bunch of language learning/exchange discord communities for example.
It's primarily text based but also has the ability to host voice conversations, which means we could *actually* organize live discussions of the monthly reads through the same platform.

What do you folks think?
