Sign up for June is now open! It will remain open until May 30th with pairs being made June 1st. All picks must be made by the 8th or one of us will make them for you.

Themes:

1. June 8 - Best Friends Day, pick a book where friendship plays an important role.

2. World Environment Day, National Gardening Exercise Day, and National Weed Your Garden Day all fall in June. Pick a book that involves nature in some way.

3. Aquarium Month/World Ocean Day, pick a book that involves water. Whether it is a book set at see, with mermaids, on a beach, or any other way you choose.

4. International Fairy (or Faery) Day June 24th. Choose a book with Fae/Fairies, or a fairytale of some kind.

Bonus: June 6 is D-Day, pick a WWII book.

Rules:
Comment that you are IN before May 30th.
Give at least 3 recommendations (more is always better in my opinion) to your partner, at least 1 pick must fit a theme. (Bonus points if more do!)
Do your best to read one of the recs given to you and come back here and comment on it!

Remember, this is to introduce us all to new books and/or give us a push to read something we have been putting off.

Note, part of the fun of this challenge is finding books that fit the theme that you think your partner would enjoy. Please state why you are picking a book and make sure that at least ONE fits a theme

Mackenzie any requests?

Shorter or light reads are appreciated as I have too many planned books this month already. But anything you think I should read is good! More choices are always better.

Sneha (lovegood19) | 258 comments What would you like to read, Jo?

I'll up for anything!

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Laura, any specific shelves or genres you prefer?

For me, I have a pick it for me shelf if you could use that! But I also love most of what you do so if there is something you don't see but loved, I'm down!

message 12: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Hey Sneha, I have a shelf with options for this as I'm limited with what books I have access to at the moment so if you could pick something from that, that would be great. If there's nothing that fits, I need to be able to access the book from Audible.

message 13: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Okay here are my picks for you Sneha, if you're not able to access any of them, then let me know and I can choose alternatives! (or if you've already read them, though I did check you read and to read shelves, so hopefully you haven't!).

WWII/National Best Friend's Day- Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
This is one of my favourite books, it's set during WWII but it also fits the friendship theme really well as the friendship between Verity and Maddie is central to the book.

Aquarium Month/World Ocean Day- To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
This was one of my favourite books from last year, it's a really fun and quick read and it's all about sirens, and pretty much entirely set at sea so it fits the theme.

National Fairies Day- Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, #1) by Eoin Colfer
They're not fairies in the strictest sense, they're a lot of different magical beings, but the people are referred to as "fairies" so I think it counts. Plus it's a lot of fun!

message 14: by Mackenzie :) (new)

Mackenzie :) (book_girl_777) | 253 comments @Brittney you can recommend anything that's kindle unlimited and on my shelf tag.

Here are your recommendations:

-the siren by Keira cass for world ocean day. It's also not one of those 500 pages books it's a fast paced book.

- Basicly anything by holly black for fae related books.

-Allies by Alan gratz for WWll b-day book.

-a ballad of songbirds and Ankeny Suzanne collins. I started this and it's really good so far.

Mackenzie here are your picks, I had a bit of a harder time as your shelf only has 20 books and I don't use kindle unlimited but I tried to stick to those where I could. Also could you please spell my name correctly in the future? Thanks!

1. June 8 - Best Friends Day, pick a book where friendship plays an important role.
Every Last Kiss (The Bloodstone Saga, #1) by Courtney Cole there are some friendship elements in this one. Its a historical romance/time travel/myth kind of book. Its on KU and I loved it when I read it.
Three Mages and a Margarita (The Guild Codex Spellbound, #1) by Annette Marie Best friendships in this series, its on KU and if you start it you wont regret it. I've been listening to this series its seriously amazing.

2. World Environment Day, National Gardening Exercise Day, and National Weed Your Garden Day all fall in June. Pick a book that involves nature in some way.
Touch of Power (Healer, #1) by Maria V. Snyder or The Black Gryphon (Valdemar Mage Wars #1) by Mercedes Lackey both are good books that have an importance about the environment they are in

3. Aquarium Month/World Ocean Day, pick a book that involves water. Whether it is a book set at see, with mermaids, on a beach, or any other way you choose.
Rolling in the Deep (Rolling in the Deep, #0.5) by Mira Grant If you can find a copy, horror mermaids. Enough said, its amazing.
Stillhouse Lake (Stillhouse Lake, #1) by Rachel Caine Just for something different, I havent read it yet but it is on KU and supposed to be an excellent thriller

4. International Fairy (or Faery) Day June 24th. Choose a book with Fae/Fairies, or a fairytale of some kind.
A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas looks like you haven't read this one yet, if you can find a copy it satisfies the Fae prompt.
Spelled (The Storymakers, #1) by Betsy Schow Great fairy tale retelling, on KU
Twisted The Girl Who Uncovered Rumpelstiltskin's Name by Bonnie M. Hennessy Not on KU but I believe its still free right now. One of my absolute fave retellings, it was well done. On the darker side.

Bonus: WWII
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein its worth every penny. One of the best WWII stories and its filled with friendship. Loved this and all the rest of the series.

I can't get ballad of songbirds anytime soon
Allies might be good but I am hesitant when it comes to middle grade historical fiction.
I had taken Siren by Keira Cass off my tbr. Tell me what's good about it? :)

You didn't actually pick a specific book by Holly Black so I guess I will go with The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air, #2) by Holly Black

Hey Jaya, if you are interested the sign ups for next month are already up. I can give you some recs for this month if you would like and if you have any to add to mine go for it!

Mackenzie :) (book_girl_777) | 253 comments @Brittnay I am so sorry for spelling your name wrong. My phone autocorrects on my phone while I had your name correct in the first place. Again I'm really sorry.

I knew there were some good holly black books but I haven't read much of them yet. I see a lot of people talking about holly black and knew they were fae.

Siren was actually a really good. It's about a girl who has to give her life to be a siren, (and the ocean controls her, which is pretty cool) when she isn't a siren she has to live on land. While she is on land she falls in love but has to figure out how to live him without making the ocean angry.

I think I'm going to go with every last kiss it deffinetly sounds good

Okay then I will look for the next month sign ups.

message 21: by Sneha (new)

Sneha (lovegood19) | 258 comments Jo, these are your picks:

1) Tunnel Of Bones - It takes place in Paris. Cassidy's best friend is a ghost. I thought this was even better than the first book.

2) Dry - This was actually very good. Its realistic fiction. If you read it, you might want to keep a water bottle with you at all times!

3) The Nowhere Girls- Its super intense. It's about our sexist culture. I hope you read this one because it's one of my favorite books ever. I really love it!

( All of these books have good friendship tropes)

message 22: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I think I'll go with Dry, I love Neal Shusterman's books!

So I finished it - and while I liked it somehow it didn't resonate as much with me as I'd liked - and the narrative felt a bit strange to me

The end of this month has been crazy for me and I haven't gotten to mine but may be able to start it early July.

message 37: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I finished mine at the beginning of this week and enjoyed it, though it's not my favourite Neal Shusterman book. Tbh, I think it's going to be hard for anything to ever top Unwind for me!
