What a difference if would have made if Elvis Presley did not have Colonel Parker as his manager....

Many of his films passed 1963 were not good

But in his earlier films he showed he could act when he needed to..

Love Me Tender

Flaming Star (his most dramatic role)no singing.

PS... He would have been 85 years old this year

But Colonel Parker turned these down without Elvis knowning

All I can say - thank you "Colonel" Parker for turning down those roles! Elvis was an okay actor but in most of those films mentioned - I don't think so.
Certainly the end product would have been different and not for the better.
Who was he supposed to play in "Midnight Cowboy" - Joe or Ratso? The thought is mind boggling.
As with all films lots of actors names are bandied about by agents and studios in thought bubbles but only a few ever get to the serious end of discussion.

He was okay because the films he was in especially 60's were rubbish.

The critics and fans regarded his work in dramatic roles was good

in Flaming Star(no singing at all in the film) and Kid Galahad, he did act.

But anything from 1963 to 69 was rubbish...

Not sure about how it would have turned out for him, but John Wayne and Elvis Presley would have been different.

Came across this paragraph in Glenn Frankel's new book SHOOTING MIDNIGHT COWBOY (NY: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2021):

"(Producer) Hellman and Schlesinger shopped around 'Midnight Cowboy' to various studios, starting with MGM, which contractually had the right of first refusal for John's next film. Someone there suggested that Joe Buck might be a great role for Elvis Presley, provided they could come up with some songs for him to perform and, of course, eliminate the gay overtones. Someone else suggested Sammy Davis Jr. for Ratso. John just shook his head in amazement: only in America. It was clear to him that MGM never could or would embrace a film project that genuinely reflected Jim Herlihy's bleak little novel."

A singing Joe Buck and a Black Ratso Rizzo - now that would have made for an interesting interpretation of the book. A "G" rated musical starring Elvis and Sammy!!
Sounds crazy but the same studio did turn the classic "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" into a dreadful musical the same year, quickly forgotten with its only redeeming feature being Peter O'Toole's fine performance.
