Seeing our July BOM is The Sun Down Motel would you consider modifying Task no 11 Read a Book set in a hotel to Read a Book set in a hotel or motel... Pretty Please.

I consider a motel to be a hotel already! ditto B&B. This is a road trip, so hostel would work too. Campsite or caravan parks wouldn't, mind.

The Jetsetters is (a) set on a boat (I think, from the blurb) (b) yellow cover and (c) (and I will brook no arguments!) has deckchair on the cover, so that's a second :)

message 509: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Maybe there can be a separate thread for this (if there isn't one in Captains group), but can another GR Librarian here look into updating page count on this if appropriate? I don't want to update my own (or a teammate's) book during a team challenge. Conflict of interest. :)

Perfiditas

GR says 288 pages for this ASIN but Amazon says 322.

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I feel like Cat telling (trying to convince?) everyone that The Jetsetters has deckchairs on the cover is like me and Alysa trying to tell everyone that Save the Date was indeed brown enough during TT 😂

message 511: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments That cover was fine dark chocolate 4EVA!!!!!

And I actually do not mind that Jetsetters cover for deckchairs. I mean, there are chairs like that on pool decks, right?
At least no one was picturing the deck chair scene from Kate's Crew... until... NOW.

I assumed that book was to blame for the deckchairs and the townhouse tasks

message 513: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Probably, but not everyone around here would know that. Most people just figured, "Hey, it's summer, time for some deckchairs."

I wish there were more tasks that involved drinking pina colodas and such. *dreams*

@Sophie & Sammy.... I can't decide if I should be appalled that my views on Rincewind are so scorched in your memories that I'm being used as a caution.

But as it is true that Rincewind is bottom of my preferences I'll merely nod in agreement that yes, as & when I recommend a Discworld book, I'm reccing that book, and woe betide anyone who goes off-piste! ;-D

Hahaha! I kinda figured that was the case ;)

I'm almost afraid to admit it, but I'm actually quite fond of Rincewind. Mostly because my introduction to the Discworld was my husband reading the books to my bump when I was pregnant with our first. This was *cough* only a couple *cough* of years ago...

(I should probably go get tested for this cough that has just appeared from nowhere...)

Melindam | 8304 comments I picked up Colour of Magic while still at Uni and put it down right away. It took me *COUGH* (Sammy, this is contagious! ) years to venture to Discworld again... but thankfully, that time I chose well... it was Hogfather... and then Guards!Guards! and what a difference they made.

What are gym knickers? An inquisitive mind wants to know.

My school had these bottle green colour.
They are thick material that went over your knickers and you tucked your aertex shirt / vest into them.

Disgusting things that I had to wear thru school (they went under your games skirt too, to protect modesty.)

And now you had me googling aertex shirts too...

message 530: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1885 comments Why couldn't you just wear a T-shirt and shorts? That's what we mostly wore during gym lessons.

message 531: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1885 comments Well, I see that you definitely have fond memories of these...

message 532: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8052 comments I happened to click over just in time to see the lovely green shorts. Wow.

It must be an English thing. We US public school gym rats wore t-shirts and shorts, or sweat pants if it was cold. Can't say that I miss gym class, but I am pretty happy i didn't have to wear those!

Yeah. Wisconsin. Shorts in January is a bit harsh when running outside.

Girls only school!

We had capes, blazers and felt hats and summer boaters! The whole aspirational deal. (I was never allowed a cape, to my great sadness)
By the time we were allowed to mingle with the local boys school it was mid90s floppy hair, not mullets. Lots of bleached hair too... (I still have a weakness. James Marsters as Spike... Yum!)

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 121 comments Jenny wrote: "It must be an English thing. We US public school gym rats wore t-shirts and shorts, or sweat pants if it was cold. "

That must have depended on where you grew up. In the South, we were forced to wear gym suits. 🤮

These things were property of the school. You got one assigned to you at the beginning of the year and turned them in at the end of the school year. They'd been worn for so many years they were mostly threadbare and you were not allowed to wear anything else. If you "forgot" your gym suit, you got a zero for that class period. The scars........

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1977 comments These gym outfits are the stuff of nightmares!

In middle school we were each given a T-shirt and long shorts (the T-shirt we got to keep because we had to write our names on them...I think the shorts we gave back at the end of the year?) and I believe in high school we just had to bring our own clothes.

(In Indiana in the US. For reference, this would have been about 12-15 years ago)

Let's just say it's be a *cough* bit longer *cough* since I was in middle school. (You guys are right. This cough is contagious!)

They were also supposedly to preserve modesty but the things were skintight. So, yeah, complete fail.

message 541: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments I went to an all-girls school, but we at least got to wear basketball shorts for gym class. They were Maroon. Our colors were grey and maroon. The rest of the time we wore maroon and grey plaid skirt and no pants underneath them in winter, which was chilly. No hats though,

Kit that's second hand provided by the school is the stuff of nightmares

message 545: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12888 comments We had hideous shorts and polo shirts (you know, the really thick shiny ones) in Scotland, which even in -20C in winter had you sweating before you even started class.

In the Netherlands there was no school uniform of any description, so you could wear what you wanted, as long as it was suitable (no jeans for gym, etc.)
Of course, it being the late 80s/early 90s, this meant - horror of horrors - mostly shell suits! :D

message 546: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1885 comments I find the idea of a girls only school very exotic, we don't have anything like that in Finland, all are for both girls and boys (and very few private schools, most of those are Steiner schools). And no school uniforms either.

message 547: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1443 comments It is very much the same in Norway as in Finland, so I'm struggling a bit when trying to imagine what an all girls school would really be like. The first ting that comes to mind is the boarding school in the movie Wildchild=P

message 548: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments I have not seen that movie and we were not a boarding school but a catholic school (though my family is not catholic, which occasionally confused people). There were some things where you could tell how socially constructed gender and "being good at subjects" as the all-girls schools were often the only school fielding girls at math academic competitions. (Unsurprisingly, I was on the math team). My BC Calculus class was all female by definition. We had the largest girls’ cross-country team in the state with 10% of the school running CC (I ran). I would like the think it is better now. My twin and I attended since the public school in my area was struggling.

message 549: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Well girls I was in middle school in the mid 1960s in the US (Ohio) in public schools and we had these horrendous jumpsuits that snapped up the front. They were short style only and no one looked good in them no matter the body type. Also, because it was a jumpsuit (all one piece) you would get the worst wedgie every time you raised your hands overhead for basketball, volleyball, etc. Don’t even want to think about when we had gymnastics in those horrible things! They would ride up and your cheeks would be hanging out for all the boys to goggle especially when vaulting over the horse or on the parallel bars. So mortifying! I was long and lean, so mine would hitch up worse than the shorter girls. Also after showers we had to walk by the PE teacher in a line, open our towel and she would look to see if we were damp to prove we actually had showered. Can you imagine anyone doing that today? So creepy even then, but it was just the way it was for years!

message 550: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So glad we could just wear our own stuff. My daughter was very busty at a young age. They kept giving her extra baggy shirts to wear to gym. Her boobs were too distracting.
