I'm sure many are skipping around.

Monica Davis Final thoughts:

My first thought was that not all of these stories are in the fantasy genre, (but many were). Overall, I liked the book, but expected more from some of the popular "seasoned" writers.

For me, the best part (most enjoyable) was reading it with this group. The comments and observations from other readers were/are (some still coming in) an added bonus. Many of the authors were new to me, so to get the perspective of those who are familiar with their writing was very helpful. I've added some new books to read, based on comments here.

Including a collection of short stories as a monthly group read selection was helpful. It would be nice to have the option for more group short story collections from time to time.

Melora The group discussion aspect made the book particularly fun for me too, Monica. This is only the second book discussion I've participated in on GR, and being able to compare impressions with other readers is a treat!

Thanks to the anthology, I tried authors I otherwise wouldn't have, and some of them I liked well enough that I'll look at other things they've written (just what we all need, right? bigger TBR piles!).

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments It is wonderful when the comments are full of such great stuff. Fab discusions. Very proud mod. Thanks to all involved.

Lára | 479 comments A fine 3 stars book. Lots of good stories, some bad narrators (if you have audio version)...

3 stars because of the narrators, 4 stars for the book.

Glad you were able to enjoy at least parts of the book. Bummer about the "bad" narration.

Anne (almondine) W00t, I finished it just in time! I gave it 3.5 stars in general. I hardly ever read short story collections and this book definitely inspired me to read more of those. Plus I added a few 'new' authors to my giant to-read list :).

My full review on all the seperate stories can be read here:

Andreas Thanks for your review, Anne. I read the anthology half a year ago and didn't remember a couple of those stories at all.

I read your review side by side with my own which also reviews each story separately (here is the link) and it is very interesting to compare our results :)

Anne (almondine) Thanks for the like! :) Good thing I kept track of my reading progress, because I already forgot what Provenance was about after a mere two weeks!

That IS interesting indeed! :D Seems like we pretty much have the same opinion on every story except for the Stephen Saylor one. And even there we both concluded the whole thing was predictable as f***. ;).

Your review is way more in-depth than my gibberish though :$

Andreas No, it wasn't gibberish - compare it to others that rambled on just one story of the whole anthology or didn't say anything specific about them, your's was educated :)
I write a couple more sentences for each story because I found out that weeks after reading them, I often can't remember what they were about.
One problem is that it is very time-consuming. The other problem is that GR has got a limit on review lengths. That's why I started outsourcing anthology reviews to wordpress.

Anne (almondine) I DID notice some of the 'top comments' on Rogues were simply from people who could NOT wait to read it. Yet still haven't read it to this day...
Time-consuming indeed, way more than the average book review. I didn't even know about the limit. Oh man, if I had found out after endless copy-and-pasting that it didn't fit...how frustrating!

This was really an interesting and enjoyable read. There were a few stories that were not very good but other than those three or four tales most were really good. It would have a 3.5 because of those few but the rest of the book warrants a 4.

P.H. Solomon (phsolmon) | 11 comments I liked the scope of represented rogues in the book and even enjoyed several of the real-world stories. Though the anthology was well edited a few stories fell short including Martin's which seemed rather distant and dry - gave it 4 stars.
