Which mystery work would you like to read with us during July?

Please place your suggestion here, or second someone else's.

Because we alternate between Golden Age and more recent works, please suggest a more recent or contemporary mystery for the month of July. For convenience, a cut-off date is around 1960, so any English mystery since then is fine.

Debra Diggs What about A Perfect Spy by John le Carré? It might be more spy than mystery and I am not sure if it only takes place in england.

France-Andrée (iphigenie72) | 386 comments I found a new series I'm interested in, but I waited to nominate the first one A Share in Death by Deborah Crombie.

We go by the book page Debra, and it's on there as a mystery as well as other genres. I read it once and it does have a great mystery at its heart.

I'd love to read Deborah Crombie! She sounds the sort of author who writes the mysteries I love, and I think she's bang in the middle of this group's focused style ... except that she is American, and travels to the UK to research her novels.

So I'm really sorry France-Andrée, but I feel we can't have anything by her as our group read. Please do share about her in our thread for American mystery authors, however.

France-Andrée (iphigenie72) | 386 comments That’s too bad then. I only read the synopsis and didn’t think about looking her up! Then I’ll nominate The Last Detective by Peter Lovesey, I still want to read it.

Michaela | 262 comments I nominate Ordeal by Fire by Sarah Hawkswood. It´s a historical mystery.

message 9: by Emmy (new)

Emmy B. | 87 comments Is Paula Hawkins' Into the Water ok?

Also Anne Cleeves' The Glass Room is something I was keen to read.

Is it okay to nominate more than one book?

Hi Emilia, either of these would be fine, but only one please. Which would you like to nominate? (Maybe someone else will nominate the other ;) )

Oh ok no problem - I think I'll have Into the Water. Thank you! :)

message 12: by Susan (new)

Susan I'd like to nominate The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell. It's her latest book, published November of last year, so I'm not sure if it's too new... It is available in multiple formats from multiple booksellers, though! If it doesn't qualify, no worries--I'm already loving some of the other nominations in this thread :)

They're both fine, thanks! As you say Susan yours is already available is various formats. It's only usually when a books is brand new, that there's a problem with accessibility.

I'll repost the list.

Eek sorry, I'm not up on the rules! I'm okay to keep Ordeal by Fire, if that makes things easier?

message 31: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) | 2932 comments Mod
Since we don't have enough seconds, I'll make up the five in nomination order. Please feel free to nominate anything that doesn't get in, in a future modern mystery poll.
