Sue | 2721 comments I ran across this link for a free PDF download for Kindred.

I'm not sure about reading in PDF format to be honest, but I know many of us are looking for alternatives until libraries re-open. If you read via PDF, let us know how that works out!

Jen K | 3143 comments Thanks for setting this up! I'm looking forward to the read.

I can convert the pdf into epub (for most e-readers) and mobi (for Kindle) and email it to anyone who needs it. Just let me know!

Very cool!! I didn't know that was even possible!

It's a free program called Calibre (https://calibre-ebook.com/) which I use on my PC. It can convert just about any format to another, and of course it's an e-reader too. There are other similar programs but I've been happy with this so it's the only one I'm familiar with.

But be warned, sometimes things don't translate well, especially with punctuation, spacing and the like, so there can be mistakes. Overall though, the book is usually still readable.

Jen K | 3143 comments I started Kindred yesterday and forced myself to stop late last night.

The story is fascinating. I couldn't imagine being sent back to a time of being assumed a slave. It was well done to start with Rufus as small child to humanize him before society norms got to him.

Sue | 2721 comments I finished Kindred this afternoon. I listened to the audio, so it took awhile - at least I got in some extra walking time just because I wanted to keep listening!

I really enjoyed this book, and I'm glad it came up as one of my picks for the Trim challenge. So many people have rated it highly, I had both high hopes and I wasn't disappointed.

What a terrifying story - to suddenly be transported back to a time when your skin color automatically made you a slave! The book gave a pretty graphic description of the violence of that time, and our poor heroine Dana got to experience a lot of it.

I found myself absolutely hating Rufus and wanting to kill him myself! I understood Dana's decisions were to ensure her own survival, and I think the author did a great job of presenting the fact that even the limited choices Dana had were more than most slaves were afforded.

Pure coincidence that we read this book right now - as people are protesting the police brutality against an unarmed black man. So sobering and horrifying to think that we just haven't come all that far as a society.

I gave this book 5 stars.
