Tasha | 119 comments I usually buy new if I can, but if I'm skint I tend to check out my charity shops. I don't really like buying books online at all, I only ever do as a last resort really, but if I do it's usually new

Georgia (georgiabarber) | 33 comments I'm really not very trustworthy of books online that say 'good condition' because it's a rather relative term so it could mean anything, depending on the seller's definition!

I also really love owning my own books because then the book is only worn by my reading and it becomes evidence of how much I've read it (unless I lend it to someone of course, but if the book is that good I'd usually demand that they buy it themselves!). I guess I just like well-loved books!

Kerry (kerrykathleen2) | 164 comments When I'm low on money I usually look for 'like new' or 'very good' quality so I can get it for a reduced price while it still looking nice on my shelf.. It's hard to trust paperbacks when ordering online thoughh

message 4: by Cat (new)

Cat | 2 comments I'll buy new if I can, because I like the feeling of being the first one to open that copy and I love new book smell. I don't mind second hand and if I'm in a second hand shop or buying from Amazon and there's no other option though. I prefer new, but really it doesn't make too much of a difference to me - as long as all the pages are there etc.

message 5: by chloe (new)

chloe When I'm buying books online I'll usually buy them new. If I am going to buy secondhand books, I prefer going to a used bookstore so I can actually see the condition they're in. If I'm ordering a used book online then I'll probably be looking for one that says 'like new' or 'very good' conditions. All online booksellers have different definitions of 'good condition' so it's hard to trust that the book will actually be in good condition. I prefer new books, but I still buy some secondhand books - it doesn't matter much in the end as long as I'm reading!

escapeinmybookshelf (dearmrskara) I prefer to buy new books, especially if it is from a author I love. I have a Booksamillion close to me and I tend to find a lot of great YA books that are in the bargain section plus I have their membership card and buy lots of buy 2 get 1 and have coupons with them. I also buy a lot of books from Amazon. I do not usually buy from market sellers or EBay but sometimes I make an expection when I am having a hard time finding a copy. I recently bought some collectors editions from the UK on Waterstones.com and I also plan on ordering from BookOutlet.com

message 7: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (anovelglimpse) I buy new. If I want second hand, I usually just borrow from the library.

nandi | 4 comments New!

The Book Crusader (thebookcrusader) | 15 comments New or used, I prefer buying books in store, so that I know exactly what I am getting. Though in the past, when buying books off of Amazon or Ebay, I tried to get books that were as new as possible, unless there was a steep difference in price.

And I was never worried about the seller mislabeling the condition, because most sellers are afraid of negative or even neutral feedback.

message 12: by Nihar (new)

Nihar Suthar (niharsuthar) | 66 comments I always prefer them new, unless there is a tremendous cost saving between the new book and the second-hand book.

☇Briannan∞ (bbnnnaa) | 3 comments I LOVE buying used books! I especially love seeing where previous people have highlighted or underlined or made notes in them, or when they leave their bookmarks or something.. I feel like it puts soul & history into the book! However, if it's a book from a series that I love (seriously, Ellen Hopkins & Nic Sheff are so far the only books I HAVE to buy new!), or that I plan on keeping in good condition, I typically buy new.

message 15: by Brianne (new)

Brianne Geier | 18 comments I have no problem with used! Thriftbooks is one of my favorite websites to shop from. But I also love the crispness of new books :) But I mostly get second hand because it's more affordable.

message 16: by allison! (new)

allison! (allison12) I usually buy new, at a store rather than online. I do buy books at thrift stores, however, and have no problem with it. I have never bought used books online, and I don't think I will, mainly because I don't want to spend $11.99 and then find pages missing or ruined.

message 17: by RL (new)

RL (rllee) It all depends on whats cheaper honestly lol :D

message 18: by Lisa (new)

Lisa D | 15 comments Same goes for me. I usually buy used unless it's something new that just came out.

message 19: by MissBecka (last edited Jun 08, 2017 06:26PM) (new)

MissBecka Gee (missbeckagee) I adore second hand book stores!
I do buy new when it's something I've been drooling over the release date for.

message 20: by Suzi!!! (new)

Suzi!!! (suzievelyn) I usually buy new. Second-hand when it's the end of the month and I've spent most of my money on new books.

message 21: by Emily (new)

Emily (emily_woodal) Before I got a kindle, I would always purchase books from the book store...unless they were new, and then I would buy them off amazon.

Unknown poet (Anna) (unknown_poetanna) I never buy books online. I usually buy used books at a store as long as they are in good condition because they are cheaper, and I feel less guilty that they had to cut down trees to print the books. I enjoy the thought that some other person has read this same book, and maybe enjoyed it as much as I did. If you have a Mr.K's (new and used books) nearby it's definitely worth a look at, that's where I bought most of my collection of warrior cat books.

This Kooky Wildflower Loves a Little Tea and Books (alittleteaandbooks) | 19 comments I do both. But, lately, I'm on the newer side of things.

message 24: by Gala (new)

Gala (galaer) It doesn't really matter for me. They're allways books.

message 25: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa I'd rather have a new book but if the second hand one is in good condition I'd get it :)

message 26: by Dan (last edited Apr 16, 2019 09:05AM) (new)

Dan Lutts (dan_lutts) | 505 comments I tend to buy new books, mostly paperback because they're cheaper than hardcover. But I wouldn't pass up buying a used book, especially if it's out of print.

message 27: by Paula (new)

Paula | 203 comments New books but a lot of my sweet valley high books are secondhand

message 28: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (bagofbooks) | 175 comments All of my books r new but if there's a book I really want to read I will buy a used copy & if I like it I will re-purchase it new. I'd have to say 99% of my Sweet Valley r new.

Booked with Caroline (bookedwithcaroline) Over the years I have completely switched from having brand new books to all second hand and I’m happy that I have. I can purchase more books for less and typically other book lovers take good care of those used books. There’s something to be said about sharing the love of books and recycling what already exists in the world to not be forgotten. I adore used book stores.

message 30: by Kiran (new)

Kiran | 9 comments second hand books are very good depending on if ur trying to save money but for me theres such a great appeal in buying books new and we all know new books last longer than older ones

message 31: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Stringer | 137 comments I meet up with a book club on a regular basis and we always wrap a book up and put only its genre on the front. One by one, we have to choose which one we take. It's a great way to get a pre-loved book! Other than that, I usually buy new.

message 32: by adriana (new)

adriana | 3 comments Not only is buying books second hand better for the environment, i personally think it adds character to the book. Sometimes when i buy a new book i’m hesitant to make creases and am usually just more carful but when i have a used book, i don’t need to worry about that. It’s also cheaper😁

message 33: by Sofia (new)

Sofia Rodriguez (sofiarenee) | 2 comments it depends on the type of book. personally, like getting all of my school books second hand, and my classics. I feel like it adds character, and its nice to see other people's annotations some times. But a lot of my ya that is relatively new you cant really find second hand, and if its second hand then its either destroyed or just as expensive as a new book. I understand its more environmentally conscious, so the vast majority of my books are second hand, but obviously, if I'm looking at new releases, I cant get them second hand

message 34: by Genna (new)

Genna i only have a couple second hand books and i see no wrong with them. if it’s a new release i will most likely get it from barnes and noble or amazon. but if i’m looking for books to complete a series or find something different, i go to second hand stores.

message 35: by Christina (new)

Christina Gizzi | 1000 comments I tend to get more secondhand books or books from discount sites. I’ve found more interesting books there that look brand new than from a store like Barnes and Noble. I don’t really see a difference between new and secondhand books, most of the secondhand books that I have look brand new and don’t feel like they’ve been read before.

message 36: by I (new)

I | 3 comments Almost all of my books have been owned before and I think they are great for anyone low on cash or If you don't want to break your bank buying books. I usually only buy new books if I'm looking for a specific book or if it is on sale. Buying books second-hand keeps books from going to waste and you can find books that are out of print!!!
