I just started this book yesterday and I'm hooked! Once again SCPL has introduced me to someone who I wasn't aware of and a powerful voice and story that I am excited to hear.
I'm listening to the audio recording which is ALWAYS my preferred format for books written by People of Colour specifically and anyone who has an accent different from mine. It helps to bring the story alive in a way that the written word (and my white washed trained mind) doesn't and makes it feel like the author is intimately telling me their story.
I'm looking forward to hearing more of R Eric's story and our discussion. I feel like I'm going to finish this one fast!
I am so pleased to hear that you are enjoying the book! I couldn’t agree more - Thomas is a very captivating and inspiring storyteller. I also enjoy listening to audiobooks, particularly when the memoirist is narrating. Listening to someone tell their story makes me feel connected to them. Thanks for sharing, Heidi! I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on this title.
Thomas is a Senior Staff Writer for Elle.com and creator of the daily humour column, “Eric Reads the News." You can check it out here: https://www.elle.com/eric-reads-the-n...
In his memoir-in-essays, Thomas explores what it means to be Black and gay in America. He shares his personal struggles navigating a world that saw him as “other” and wrestling with the complexities of identity, love, grief, and success, on his journey to self-awareness and self-acceptance.
My name is Jen, and I will be leading the Online Nonfiction Book Club discussion for the month of June. I am looking forward to our discussion of this timely, insightful memoir, full of heart and humour.
