The toppler will be held from 12noon on Saturday, June 20th to 12noon on Saturday, June 27th ET.

This is a modified version of an UNO game that we play in another group that I moderate. It was created by my co-moderator, Karen. It has become quite elaborate and we play the more in-depth version of this game for 3 months yearly. I simplified it and added a bit for use here, but I just want to give credit to Karen for coming up with the original version.

Rules:
1. Books must be started and finished in the specified time period to qualify.
2. You may read any format - paperback, hardcover, ebook, or audiobook.
3. Each book must be at least 175 pages, based on the version you are reading. For audiobooks & ebooks use the page numbers for the first physical edition that comes up on the GR page. If there is no physical edition to confirm page length, audiobooks over 6 hours will qualify as will ebooks over 200 pages.
4. Only 1 task per book, except for the optional DRAW 2.
5. Tasks must apply to the edition of the book you are reading, particularly cover items/colors. Narrators only apply if you are listening to the audiobook with that narrator.
6. Graphic novels do not count.

Toppler books can count toward the group theme read and/or the monthly or yearly challenge, if they qualify.

If you are sharing your reads on social media, you can let us know what you are reading by adding #tbrtoppler.

***If you are also participating in the yearly challenge, please make sure to update your challenge as you read the books. Please do not report all of your reads at the end of the toppler as that makes a lot of work for Janice. Thank you!***

Hands:
Each team completes the same hands. Complete hands in order for scoring. (Reading does not need to be in order as long as the books are finished before the end of the toppler to be counted.) For example, you can read hand four before hand three, but you can not get points for hand four until hand three is completed.

Kristie | 19174 comments Scoring details:
Please read the scoring carefully. There are some trickier bits this time around. Let me know if you have any questions.

**You do not have to read the hands in order, but you have to complete one hand before you can get points for the next. A partial hand for your final hand will get points for the cards completed. Make sure you plan accordingly! - To clarify: For example, you can read hand four before hand three, but you can not get points for hand four until hand three is completed.

→Each card (except for WILD DRAW 4) is worth 10 points.
→WILD DRAW 4 is worth 15 points.
→Completing a hand is a 20 point bonus.

You will not get your 10 points for the SKIP card if you choose to skip it, but you can collect your bonus points for finishing the hand and move on to the next hand.

For the DRAW 2, you may read a separate book for this task or you may choose to read one book that fits this task and a task from another card in the same hand. You will still get points for both tasks. (1 book for two tasks option!)

For the WILD DRAW 4, you must read a book that fits one of the listed tasks and a task for any of the cards in the same hand. This must be one book that fits two tasks and the book can not be used for the other card. WILD DRAW 4 gets 15 points instead of 10.

*Narrator only applies if you are listening to the audiobook with that narrator.

*If using a book that starts with the word "A," "An," or "The," you may choose to use that word or ignore it for the "title starts with the letter..." tasks.

Ha! I just started a thread and said I assumed you wanted to take a back seat .... then saw this.

Fellow team 1 members, our thread is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 15: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19174 comments Every team has the same 8 hands and you need to finish them in order for points. It doesn't matter if you finish a book for hand five on Monday and hand one on Friday, as long as you finish all of hand one. If you read all of hand 4, but never finish a book for hand three, then no points for hand four. Hope that makes sense. It doesn't really matter the order you read them in as long as they are done before the toppler ends for scoring.

Whoever is your team captain / scorekeeper will keep track of which tasks still need to be completed and people on your team will coordinate with them to get them all done.

Just watch for a thread to pop up with your team number and then comment in the thread. A lot of people have done these team topplers before and can help you out.

Renee - You are on team 4 and the thread has been posted here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Ayacchi - You are on team 2. The thread has not been posted yet, so just keep an eye out for a thread that says team 2.

Kristie | 19174 comments I edited the rules above to clarify the hands and scoring. Every team has the same hands listed in message 4. You can read hand four before hand three for example, but you can not get points for hand four until hand three is completed. Let me know if that's still not clear.

message 19: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19174 comments Lynn wrote: "Is there a % rule on the cover colour tasks, or can we just go with look?"

It is by appearance. It needs to look mostly that color. The key word is mostly. A cover that just has something on it that is the color wouldn't work unless that item takes up the majority of the cover. If you're not sure ask your team, but if it isn't clear you should err on the side of it doesn't work.

Yes, that's fine. As long as two books are read (one for each 4), it doesn't matter which task for the card. If you had two titles starting with F, for example, that would work.

Yes, the main colors - red, yellow, green, and blue all fit for two different cards. You can choose which card to apply it to depending on what your team needs.

Does apply to something like "Draw Two" as well?
Use a book that you read for another task in this hand for a task that fits this card and get extra points. (1 book for two tasks!)

We can receive credit for two tasks with one book, more than a single time?

Kristie | 19174 comments Almeta wrote: "We can receive credit for two tasks with one book, more than a single time? "

I'm not sure if I completely understand your question, but let me try to clarify and see if I answer it. For the Draw 2 card, if you have one book that fits a task for the Draw 2 and fits another task for a card in that same hand you may use it to fulfill the tasks for both cards. That only applies to the Draw 2 card and can only be done once per card because once you fulfill a task for a card that card is completed.

The original question referred to hands that have 2 of the same cards in them. So, for example hand 1 has two 4 cards. You can complete any task for each of the cards, but once a task is completed, then the card is done. Each card is only completed one time.

We don't have any hands with two Draw 2 cards. But, if for example you use one book for Draw 2 and card 1 in hand three and you have another book (or even the same book read by another person) and you want to use the same tasks to complete the Draw 2 and card 1 in hand 4, you can do that.

Tasks do not get 'used up'. You can use any listed task to fulfill the card it is listed for. You just need to make sure you pay attention to the special things attached to the special cards. You can potentially receive credit for two tasks with one book one time for each Draw 2 card. Did I answer your question?

message 31: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Kristie - Hand 3 has a Draw 2 card, as well as Hand 4, and Hand 7.

message 32: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19174 comments I edited the rules to include:

*If using a book that starts with the word "A," "An," or "The," you may choose to use that word or ignore it for the "title starts with the letter..." tasks.

I realized that I knew this to be a rule, but never specified it. Just want to make sure everyone is aware that for the titles that start with a specific letter tasks the words "A", "An", or "The" may be ignored if you choose to do so. However, if using the "A", "An", or "The" benefits you, you may use it.

There are 2 instances of Card 4 in a single hand. All Draw 2 cards occur only once in the hands where they appear.

I get it now.☻

Thank you Kristie,

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Got it Kristie, you said there were no hands with two Draw 2 cards. My mistake!

Jayme | 4526 comments Hi Kristie - Great Toppler by the way :)
Quick question - if you complete all of hand 1 and are working on other hands is hand 1 considered dead and you can't switch out books anymore from that hand or can you keep switching books throughout the hands, if they fit, until the Toppler is over?
Does that make sense?
