Kristie | 19166 comments Yes, Lynn! Glad to have you take charge. I have been gophering since posting and have my two books planned. I decided to try for the cards that might be more difficult in the first hand, so I have

Hand 1:
Woof for wild draw 4 - animal MC/on cover and card 6 author Spencer Quinn**
Also fits for:
Card 1 - first in series
Card 6 - author Spencer Quinn
Hand 1, wild - (card 6 author Spencer Quinn)

Hand 1:
Trouble in Mudbug for reverse - previously read by Janice
Also fits for:
Card 1 - first in series
Card 2 - title
Skip - narrator Johanna Parker
Draw 2 - author Jana Deleon (and card 1 or skip if used in hand 3)**

Feel free to move things around as you need. I have no problems changing this up if we need to. Let me know if you need any help with anything and I'll jump in.

Lynn | 2974 comments I'll more than likely have to come back later tonight / tomorrow with a spreadsheet plan because I have my choir zoom meeting tonight (starting in about an hour).

In the meantime please do post your book plans for that week and which cards / tasks they could be used for.
Please list ALL possibilities (even if you don't plan to read that many books) ..... and how many books you are willing to read in a week.

message 7: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments I suppose there's an obvious team name for us - Numero Uno

message 8: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19166 comments I just updated my previous post. After looking at my books and the cards, if someone else has a book to read for reverse in hand 1, Trouble in Mudbug will work for the draw 2 in hand 3 and we can use it for 2 cards because it also fits for skip or card 1.

I might be able to read 3 books, but I'm only going to commit to 2 because I've been reading a lot less lately. If I think I'll be able to fit in another, I'll see what we need later in the week.

That's perfect!

message 11: by Lanelle (last edited Jun 23, 2020 11:25AM) (new)

Lanelle | 4020 comments Thanks for taking the lead, Lynn. I know we're in good hands.

I'm not sure if it's annoying or not, but I have a habit of hanging back to see what tasks are remaining and filling them. I'll post my options soon and you'll see that I have books for all of the cards.

I should be able to read ten to twelve books.

Options: (view spoiler)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments Woohoo! Greetings team mates.

Lynn, could you update the first message and add our team members names?

I like the name Numbero Uno. It seems like an obvious choice. :)

Yes, I plan to have the various info in the top posts but I've just got out of a 3 hours zoom meeting and now need to eat. I will get it organised :)

message 14: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19166 comments Eating?! Wow... just wow, Lynn. Taking time to eat... Actually, the toppler hasn't officially started yet, so I guess we can allow it. lol ;)

We just had a new addition to the toppler and he is added to our team. Art should be along to check in soon.

I can do Reverse with one of your books, A Curious Beginning.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello team!

Love the suggested name - works perfectly ;-)

I can read 2 books for sure. If I can wangle a day or two off from work, (or work from home on a couple of days), I could do another 2.

I will spend some time today gophering and post various options. I'm flexible with what I read so can fit in where you need me to.

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments I'm putting together a list of the books I want to read along with all the cards they would fill. I'll try to post it tonight, but we have lots of time.

Still waiting on Annerlee and Art

message 30: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments I noticed that Hand #2 has a couple of 9 card tasks. I just picked up a freebie from Kindle that is 250 pgs long (as paperback) and I could probably squeeze it in. I updated my list above to include it.

message 31: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Hey guys, I had planned to have a spreadsheet ready by now so we could start some initial planning. Instead, the past two days I've spent putting together a makeshift recording studio in my wardrobe and recording a couple of tracks for my choir.

Will look at the spreadsheet (and my own tbr) this weekend.

message 32: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments No worries, Lynn. We're still a week away from the Toppler. There is lots of time to plan.

The recording sounds interesting!

Ok, that's interesting! I've been offline most of the day due to a migraine, not nearly as fun as recording tracks in my own personal wardrobe studio!

message 37: by Grainne (last edited Jun 17, 2020 09:20PM) (new)

Grainne Coughlan | 1298 comments I have done some gophering and these are 2 books that will work for Hand 1 and some for other cards as well.

Hand 1 and 2: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
0: stand alone book
6: Title starts with S, author’s name starts with S

Hand 1 and 3: The Diary of a Young Girl
0: stand alone
4: Author’s name begins with F
5: Book has a mostly red cover
Draw 2: title beginnings with D

message 38: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Grainne - For card 'Reverse' it would be useful if you could make your bookshelves public, or add the team to your friends list so we can check to see if any of our books are on your read shelf.

Art (aka Whistler Reads) (art-whistlerreads) | 26 comments Hey people.....
new here...
very cooperative, tho...
assign me something, and I'll read it...
please help me figure out the rules as We go.....
I'm good for at least 5 books, maybe more...
it's the choosing part that is my drawback...
I have little(i.e. none) understanding of the "gophering" process...
just point me at what you need and I'll read it!!!
😆😆😆😆😆

my previous "team reading" experience is @SOSBingo...
I've led teams there...
I never pre-planned there either...
Is a book report required here?...

Still a work in progress at the moment, as were still waiting for Annerlee and Art (I messaged them both this evening)

The top of the spreadsheet lists all the books and what tasks they fit. I'll start working on the bottom part of the spreadsheet, which lists the hands, and start assigning books tomorrow.

Hey Art, if you could do the following ....
1. Let me know how many books you think you'll read in the week.
2. Give me a list of possible books
3. Work out what tasks those books will fit. You can find the tasks here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 42: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19166 comments Welcome, Art! What types of books do you enjoy? I can take a look tomorrow and make some suggestions. :)

Gophering is just our way of saying searching for a book to fit a task. Lynn, linked to the tasks in the comment above mine. We do report books after we finish them. For our team we will report in this thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Lynn, do we have any task in particular that we need more books for? I may put off starting The Bookish Life of Nina Hill for a couple of days so I can read it during the toppler. It fits for 0, 2, 6, 8, draw 2, reverse-Lynn.

message 43: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments Art, just to simplify it, each card has a possible of four tasks. Some of the special cards (wild, reverse, etc) might not follow that rule of thumb.

Kristie has "shuffled the deck and dealt out a number of hands". The first hand that we need to complete as a team has these cards: 4, Wild, 4, 6, Reverse, 5 & Wild Draw 4. So we need to fill those hands with the books we want to read.

Easiest thing to do in my opinion, is to look at the books you want to read next week and figure out which tasks they fit like I did in message 29.

Looking at hand 1, I have books that fit 4, Reverse, and Wild Draw 4. Other team members will have the wild, 6 & 5.

We can read out of order, but for scoring purposes we count them in order. That means if you don't have any hand 1 books, but have a hand 2 book, you can go ahead and read it. We just won't be able to score it until we finish hand 1.

It can be a bit confusing, but we'll help out.

Grainne Coughlan | 1298 comments Hi Lynn, I have sent a friend request to you all. I was getting likes on my comments and book choices a while back. They sometimes had links to questionable websites so I made my account private.

Welcome Art!! Great to have you on board :)

message 47: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Jun 15, 2020 06:57AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments Should we start trying to fill in the hands?

Hand 1: 4, Wild, 4, 6, Reverse, 5 & Wild Draw 4.

I want to start with The Library of Legends which fits the #4 card. (Audiobook)

Yikes! I see I don't have a great variety in the books I've priorized for myself. I also want to start Out of the Silence: After the Crash which would fit the other #4 card. It could also fit the Wild card.

Could I hog the two #4's in hand one?

message 48: by Grainne (new)

Grainne Coughlan | 1298 comments That’s fine by me Janice. It’s a good idea that we start to put some markers down. I can start on 6. I have that book on loan from the library for the challenge.

I've just accepted Grainne!

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

All of the books I have on my list fit for the Wild card. I could also do the Wild Draw 4, provided the Wild card counts as one other task in this hand?
