I have the book but I'm really not enthused about reading it for some reason. I'll keep an eye on this thread and if your comments intrigue me, perhaps I'll join in.

I might join, if I pick up a copy of the book. The author is hit or miss with me, but the reviews for this one look good.

It seems the toppler will be February 7-14.

We could start reading The Invention of Wings for example on the 1st or on the 15th. Any preferences?

I can do both, but I would suggest to wait until Feb 15th when the craziness is done. But again, I can do it on Feb 1st if this works better for the rest of you.

I'm fine with either as well but I think it would be nice to relax with this one after the toppler.

Sure! I just put the book on hold. There is 1 (!) copy avaliable at a nearby library so I should have it early next week.

I have read the first two chapters, one told by Handful and one by Sarah. I like the alternating viewpoints. I'm intrigued by Handful saying (view spoiler)[ 'The day life turned into nothing this world could fix....'. It sounds like not much good is coming out of that day, I assume it will be the day she's given to Sarah. Perhaps she's separated from her mom? (hide spoiler)]

With regard to Sarah's chapter, and the whole book most likely, I hope (view spoiler)[ there will not be too many abuse scenes. I always have a hard time reading those.. Sarah seems like a nice girl though, her mother on the other hand is not (hide spoiler)].

I'm around page 50, and so far I like both characters, Handful and Sarah.

How do you think we should mark the spoilers? the chapters are not numbered and they are so many that it will be difficult to keep track of them.

Peggy, it seems we are reading the same edition, so we can use page numbers, but I'm not sure about Tasha and any other member who could join us.
I'm not really obsessive about spoilers (if it's not a mystery) buy I don't want to ruin anybody's reading. :)

Good question Sandra. The chapters are indeed a bit confusing. Mine has 466 pages, it's not the on GR says I'm reading, because the copy I actually have has no cover photo and I don't like that ;-)

Perhaps we can refer to the 6 different parts?

I'm still somewhere in part 1, and I'm really enjoying the book. I had high expectations, it's one of my favourite genres (historical fiction, and also the southern US setting), and I'm glad the first impression of the book is good :)

Yes, my first impression was really good too. I'm liking it better than The Secret Life of Bees, that I liked it but don't loved it like most of the readers. I rated it 3 stars, so not bad. But I'm finding this one more mature.

I've had The Secret Life of Bees on my TBR for a long time, but never read it.

I finished Part 1. I'm wondering (view spoiler)[ how Sarah gets her different view about slaves. She has nobody in her environment who thinks like her, and I guess usually children tend to accept the way things are and have the same opinions as their parents. Would it all come from the time she was 4 and saw Rosetta being whipped?

She seems a very special child :) She will be 19 in Part 2, I'm curious what she is like now. (hide spoiler)]

I think this is one of the reasons. (view spoiler)[Seeing Rosetta being whipped was definitively one of the reasons. I think that the fact that she is kind of a disappointment to her mother for having different interests is determinant too. She doesn't want to be like her mother. She actually consider her mother a bad person. I think she says "mean". At the same time she sees how her sister Mary is turning to be like her mother, and she doesn't want to be the like that. I really wanted to read this one by Sue Monk Kidd, I enjoyed The Secret Life of Bees but was totally disappointed with The Mermaid Chair.

Hope you guys enjoy this one..i will definitely stop by this thread and read all the comments, hope I get motivated to buy it/read it soon.

Just finished Part 1. I'm surprised how things changed! (view spoiler)[Sarah's father has shown her his raw face. I thought he will be more supportive regarding Sarah's dream of being a jurist. And actually her mother has shown some compassion towards Sarah's disappointment. I guess she has already suffered when a girl for having her dreams smashed. Kind of a castling at the end of this first part. I liked it. (hide spoiler)]

I thought that was surprising too Sandra. I found her mother's remark about (view spoiler)[ all girls being born with ambition but that it had to be knocked out of them very interesting. Woman's rights (or lack thereof) seems to be a theme throughout the book. Some things Sarah says are not even that far from the truth in our day, at least not in some people's opinion, or as shown in ads and music videos sometimes. (hide spoiler)]

I've read about 2/3 of Part 2.

(view spoiler)[ I'm not sure what to think of Burke Williams. It feels like he has some ulterior motive for marrying Sarah, like he needs her for something, and I'm pretty sure she's going to get hurt.

Or, perhaps he might surprise us and have the same opinions about slavery as Sarah does and somehow make it possible for her to do something meaningful about it like she wants to. (hide spoiler)]

I realized February has only 10 days left and I also have to read Life After Life for the monthly read and challenge, and it is over 500 pages. I started Life after Life too (it will be my ereader train book), to make sure I can finish it in time, so I'll be a bit slower on The Invention of Wings (which will be my paperback at home book) from now on.

I know, Feb is mving fast. I dont think I'm going to be making my monthly read this time around. I have the book in eformat and I'm getting it real too but I have too many other reads going on! haha

Slowing down this one is fine. Tasha is only now jumping in. I have The Time Machine to finish too. And I'm not going too fast with this one. I'm only a few pages into Part 2. So I think we don't need to pause it, but we can take this one easy.

Poor Sarah and her love life. But she is definitely growing stronger in her opinions on equality. I'm curious to see if she's actually going to act upon it. It must have been so frustrating to be a woman in those times when you don't agree with the opinions of women in that time. And a spinster at 26!

I wonder what has happened to Charlotte. From the beginning it was clear something bad would happen, I wonder if this was it. (hide spoiler)]
