Tarawyn Baxter | 4 comments I read this around 2015 but I have no idea when it was published. I know it was the first in a series and I got book 1 as an audiobook at my library but they didn't have book 2 and I figured I had plenty to read and maybe they would get it later or I would buy it, but I've been trying to remember it for 3 years and I want to read the next one.
Scifi/Space opera, Scientist Martha? working on a moonbase? uncovers ancient network of interstellar gateways. The sleazy guy from the company who hired her was sure they were going to make a fortune but there were warnings that since the builders of the network appeared to all be dead there might be danger here. Pair of robots from the network builders accompany her and husband George?/Henry? He's an archaeologist and they travel through the network exploring ruins on different worlds. Robots claim not to remember anything about their creators until the couple finds evidence that the founders were killed by the robots they created. At that point husband pushed her through the portal to safety and turned to the robots and said, "But you said you didn't remember anything!!" and they replied "We lied," which was how the book ended. It's a long book and there were multiple plot lines but I don't know if I want to confuse matters in case I'm confusing them with another book.

"In the far future, Ildirans give Earth the stardrive. Two archaeologists glean forbidden knowledge from the ruins of a dead world. Robot servants of ruling insectoid Klikiss guard the Klikiss Torch, which has the power to create suns. The reasons for the fall of the Klikiss empire may return."
