Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments I'm listening to it on audio - it's great.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12575 comments Well, I am really enjoying this. So light-hearted, I got through 5 chapters and will read a bit more tonight-

I love Calcifer, and there's a great quote from Sophie I love (of course I cannot find right it now) about it being better, being old, and not caring what you say-Ha! That's me!

Please do join us Robin!-

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments I´m 5 chapters in as well. Yes, I love Sophie´s thoughts on age, and how she´s more able to be herself when she´s old. And the diva is strong with Howl :)
I also love how it connects to the movie (which was my first many encounters with this story). It´s simultaneously the same story and not the same story.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11074 comments I liked that part too! She seemed to want to be invisible anyway. It reminded me of a joke I heard once from a comedian (comedienne?). She said when she turned 40 (or 50, whatever) she found out she had a new superpower - Invisibility.

Sophie might have felt safer too, especially with Howl because she thought he would only harm girls. I think it made her braver.

For most of my life, I never went anywhere (except sometimes in the summer), without wearing makeup and doing my hair. Over the last few years, I gradually stopped. I don't think I've worn makeup more than a few days this whole year (even before covid). No one cares.

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2596 comments I feel like I have to read this again but I never re-read because there are waaayyyy too many books on my TBR!

I never knew there was a movie! I will have to look for it, because it would be fun, I am sure. But I am glad I am reading it first.

@Nancy-Yep-I have am getting out of that habit of doing my hair and make-up...to go pick up grocery's LoL, what was I thinking! 2020 is the year of the natural woman!

I know what you mean about re-reading Barbara-there are very few authors that I will even consider re-reading.

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments It´s this one Joanne: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347149/

I´ve always been low maintenance... But lockdown sure didn´t make me use more time on stuff like that. My standard comment to the hairdresser is: Cut it as you like, as long as I don´t have to put in any effort in, in the morning, except for a brush.

message 10: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12575 comments It's Anime? I wonder if my daughter has seen it..

message 11: by NancyJ (last edited Jun 29, 2020 02:58PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11074 comments It's anime and it's very popular with film fans. The director is Hayao Miyazaki. He is as famous in Japan as Disney or John Lasseter is in the US.

Check out the imdb page for some clips and other films. My favorite was My Neighbor Totoro, I think the film is available on Prime video now.

annapi | 5505 comments I'm reading it now! So far it's pretty fun.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12575 comments @ Nancy, I spoke with my daughter and of course she has see it numerous times. She gave me the low down on Hayao Miyazaki-

I am really enjoying the book-moving onto chapter 12 tomorrow-i have no idea where this going, but that's Ok!

message 14: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments I'm at chapter 16. I really like it. The storyline is somewhat different from the movie, so I'm not sure where it's headed either. I really want some things to happen that happen in the movie, but can't be sure. Will talk about them in spoiler tags when I've finished. I am listening to the audio, it really adds to the story.
I love the worldbuilding with the moving castle, the different doors and the characters. The castle, Calcifer, Howl, Sophie, and Michael are actually quite similar to the movie, so I'm getting a mix of pictures in my head from that and my own imagining.

Should be done this week end-Pooch ripped out one of her staples and had to be taken back to the Vet....A larger Cone of Shame was dispensed along with new staples-hopefully that's all the drama and i can read for awhile!

message 17: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments Oh, hope your pooch will be fine! I'm not going to be reading much today or tomorrow. Had a busy day at work today finishing up before my holiday, and tomorrow we're packing and driving.

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments Thanks! It's not far, only a bit more than an hour outside town. But we have a couple things to do before we're ready :)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12575 comments Oh I really enjoyed this one! It was just that pick me up that I needed-Nothing like a good "Happy Ever After"!

I really like how the author kept me guessing until the end, about who was really the good guy and who was evil. The dog-man and the scarecrow really put the icing the on the cake for me

message 26: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments I really enjoyed this sweet magical story. I liked the things the movie had taken from it and also liked they're not similar, but the feel or the core of the story is intact. This is one if those examples where the book AND the movie are good and you can't say which is better, because they're just, different. I needed a story like this right now :D
I listened to the audiobook read by John Sessions, who enhanced the experience greatly with voices, accents etc (I even thought the narrator was a woman till just now...)
