There are two main reasons for giving the Paleo diet a fair trial. The first of course is fat loss. The second it to change your diet to help or get rid of chronic health problems.
If you are trying for the second reason, you will have to follow the diet more strictly. However, if you are just trying to lose some excess body fat and generally improve your health, you may do well just following the diet 80% of the time. It was discovered that people that follow the diet 80% of the time still get great results with Paleo. This means that you can eat the occasional brownie, or have bread or rolls at a restaurant. You can cheat with pasta on occasion. This is a great help to many people. So many people fail on diets because they are just too strict. If we make ourselves miserable and are under constant stress, chances are we are not going to succeed with the diet. A good diet is one that you can stick with indefinitely. In fact, Paleo is considered a lifestyle, rather than a diet.
The Paleo diet in a nutshell (pun intended), is a diet based on meats, vegetables, fruits and nuts. When you become familiar witht the diet and become familiar with Paleo baking, you can enjoy Paleo versions of cookies, cakes and more.
There are no real gurus to follow with Paleo. You can guide yourself into the diet with a good book. I started with "Paleohacks Cookbook" http://paleohackscookbook.com, you can check my review. There are also others like "Well Fed" that are excellent also.
Next time I will be discussing some typical Paleo misconceptions.

I cant eat bread or pasta on the Paleo diet?

Yes I know this one is scary. Its true, especially if you are trying Paleo to combat a health condition. Grains cause a lot of problems for many people. Wheat is the most notorious. Why wheat is a problem is complex and worthy of an entire post in itself. To simplify, the wheat of today, is not the wheat of our ancestors. It has been modified and hybridized over the centuries. Even worse, it is bombarded with pesticides many many times, before it becomes a finished product. Its not hard to see that grains are one of the most common allergens. Gluten sensitivity is also in the picture here. For many people, grains in one way or another cause inflammation or autoimmune problems. So, yes, to get healthier we may need to avoid grains and products made from grain. But all is not lost. Im happy to report there are countless recipes for Paleo friendly breads, muffins, cookies, and even pastas. Some of these I actually prefer to the original. The secret is in the substitution of nut flours for all purpose flour. Once you master these simple substitutions, you can bake delicious Paleo baked goods. Sure its a little more work, but isnt losing body fat and feeling healthy worth it? More on this another time.
