What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Hi all,

So the book is old (I think 90's).
It's about a journalist or writer disappearing in India.
Someone else goes after him.
That person arrives in Calcutta or Bombay on the train station.
Someone throws change at him after which all the homeless people jump at him to grab the money.
It was like a murder attempt.
He survives and searches for the disappeared guy.
He eventually finds him somewhere in the slums.
I think the plot in the end has something to do with the Hindu gods.

I'm not sure but I think the writer also wrote a couple of scifi books.
