Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments I'm currently watching The Queen's Gambit. I've watched 3 episodes so far. I'm really enjoying it so I'm doling out the episodes. One per day. I'm also re-watching Hannibal. I finished season 2 yesterday. So. Much. Blood.

With all the "improvements" Lucas made to the original trilogy, this is the one he missed.

Trike | 11199 comments I watched The Dig on Netflix last night, which is based on the book The Dig, which in turn is based on a true event. I thought Ralph Fiennes was terrific, as always, and everyone else did an excellent job, but like a lot of adaptations it seemed to be missing… something. It’s so straightforward that I can’t tell if there was supposed to be anything metaphorical about the unearthing of the objects. I was never bored, but it doesn’t quite click.

I've seen this a few times. It's pretty awesome! I wouldn't be mad if they came out with yet another edition of A New Hope with a better lightsaber battle spliced in.

Thanks for the heads-up. I’m fascinated by Antarctica, currently reading Madhouse at the End of the Earth: The Belgica's Journey into the Dark Antarctic Night.

I haven’t listened to it. I take it that it’s not as good as his videos examining other franchises’ spaceships.

Sembazuru | 29 comments I'm watching (only 2 episodes left) "Better Than Us" on Netflix. It was produced and mostly located in Moscow, Russia.

I'm enjoying it, it seems to be the type of story that Azimov would have written. (Yes, they actually reference the robotic laws as the Azimov laws or robotics.) But, similar to the iRobot stories, the story is about what happens when a single robot either doesn't have the laws or interprets them in an unexpected way.

I've been watching it. The first episode was pretty good. It wasn't as inventive as I thought the show was going to be.

Then the second episode aired. Wow! I really liked it! Much more like I thought it should be.

The third episode falls somewhere in between the first two.

I've enjoyed the "What If...?" episodes.

My only gripe would be that they are just remaking the movies with a slight twist.

I hope they get a bit more inventive and tread new ground outside the MCU movie storylines. Maybe even bring in a few characters that haven't made it into the movies.

message 729: by Trike (new)

Trike | 11199 comments I’m loving What If. I think the show is every bit as good as the movies. The writing is terrific and the animation is spectacular.

Thank you for reminding me. I had completely forgotten about it. I'm not sure it is being promoted well.

Chris Bellevie (cbellevie) | 45 comments Loving What If...? but would agree, feels like they are sticking to MCU and really want them to get out of that. This is an opportunity to do anything, with any Marvel character.

Conversely, I hope they do stick to the MCU characters and stories, otherwise I'd likely be hopelessly lost. Not much mileage in a 'What If' story where you're not familiar with the canonical events.

Enjoying it so far.

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) I finally watched the first episode of What If...? It was good but not great. I'll probably keep watching. It's nice that each episode is a one-off and doesn't require weekly follow-up.

The Zombie episode was fun. At least the last few episodes have moved away from the movie storylines.

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5196 comments ^ I never read the Marvel Zombies comics but they were done. Because I didn't read them I don't know if this is a takeoff on that. Seems fairly straightforward to do a Zombie storyline regardless. Pick your situation and Zombie apocalypse, presto bitey! The writers must have enjoyed doing this one.

The only overlap that I recall is the fact that once superheroes got turned, the world fell within a day. Or maybe that was the DC one. Either way, superhero zombies are freaky.

Trike | 11199 comments I watched the first two episodes of Y: The Last Man on Hulu this morning. I liked it. I remember not enjoying the first graphic novel so I didn’t continue, therefore I have no detailed recollection of it. This seemed expanded in scope from what little I recall.

Getting this off the ground was probably why Vaughan took a sabbatical from Saga, so maybe that book will come back now.

Trike | 11199 comments Watched Kate on Netflix. Solid action flick if not terribly original. Possibly the best sword fight I’ve seen in a decade, though.

I was struck by the notion that Mary Elizabeth Winstead could play Charlize Theron’s sister, whereas before I always thought she more closely resembled Linda Cardellini.
