What else are you watching?

Looks like everyone else noticed, too, and it’s being called the Netflix Christmas Cinematic Universe: https://www.buzzfeed.com/kirbybeaton/...

HERE’S WHAT I KNOW:

I've seen exactly none of those movies 😕
Then again I hate Xmas and think "Die Hard" is the only good Xmas movie 😉 😜

The bizarre thing (heh) about the pre/sequel Thing is that they did all of the effects practically, just as in the original, but then replaced them with inferior CGI. Truly a head-scratcher, that.

Why??

I just found this video from a few years ago about it: https://youtu.be/JyOu3j7CtoE

Thanks for that. Lame studio decisions...

I do love me some Die Hard. But I also enjoy an annual viewing of Miracle on 34th Street (the non-colorized original, please), It's a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol (1951), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (original animated version), and of course Elf. And if they're available: Scrooged and Black Christmas (the unofficial prequel to Halloween).

It's a Wonderful Life was the last movie I saw in a cinema, December of 2019.
It also holds special place for me, not for annual viewings, but because a friend of mine released an album of songs inspired by it, and I give it a listen several times when December rolls around.

Other great holiday-but-not movies:
The Apartment by Billy Wilder. It deserved to sweep the Oscars like it did.
The Thin Man. So great; Nick and Nora Charles are the very definition of “relationship goals”.
Gremlins, Mean Girls, Trading Places, The Ref... especially The Ref for Tassie Dave. It hates Christmas so hard.
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation was a fun movie. So I don't hate all Xmas movies
and The Nightmare before Christmas was ok.

2005, actually, and it really does. It is darkly hilarious and still works because of the banter between Batman and Iron Man.
Physical media. How quaint 😉
Happy Thanksgiving to the US Sword and Laserinos. Hopefully you all are staying safe and socially distancing this year.

Doh, I just realized I was mixing it up with “The long kiss goodnight”, hence my questioning if it held up. I’m guessing not so much.

"Hey Swedes!"

The longer version of that story, Frozen Hell, which was published in 2019, just might be getting a movie adaption from Blumhouse, possibly with John Carpenter.

They’re both great.
The reason why I think John Carpenter’s The Thing is so great is that it manages to honor both the original short story (Who Goes There?) *and* the first film, which on paper would seem like an impossible task.
And one of my favorite bits was kept from The Thing From Another World when Palmer exclaims, “Supply window!” Which is a funny line from the original — ** glass breaking ** “What was that?!” “Sounds like a window.” 😁 — but they amplified it by making us think one of the initial vectors is a character named Windows.
I did a spoof on the original in college built around that line. “What was that?” “Sounds like a window.” (Door noise) “What was that?” “Sounds like a door.” (Plastic rustling) “What was that?” “Sounds like a bag of Fritos.”
You can watch The Thing From Another World for free here: https://vimeo.com/423664278 It holds up exceedingly well.

All you budding editors out there should watch those shows and ponder the insane amount of work that went into them. Some of the brief visual jokes in the Elf show required crazy investments of time.

I read The Starman Omnibus, Vol. 1 a few years ago, but don’t really have much knowledge of where this fits in with that, except the staff has the same look.

It was originally a DC Universe show, but now, going forward it will be a fully CW show. I guess we shall see how the quality holds up once they produce the second season.

I don't have cable so I don't think I'll have access to this. Reviews appreciated.

I’m looking forward to the FFCU... Fast Food Cinematic Universe.
Romance is in the air as the wedding of the century is at hand between the Burger King and the Dairy Queen, but tensions are high between his kingdom and the empire to the north: Tim Horton’s. Will Colonel Sanders come out of retirement to defend the royal family? Can Wendy finally accept her boyfriend Ronald’s clown culture? Why are the rumors swirling about Little Caesar and Long John Silver? Will the festivities be disrupted when the Hamburglar and Noid team up?
Move over, Avengers and Lords of various Rings, for this will prove to be epic!

All the fast food franchises you mentioned have a humanoid avatar (Dairy Queen an exception?) that can engage in some kind of relationship. What does this portend for Whataburger, White Castle, Shake Shack and poor upper-torso-only Jack-In-The-Box?

I still have the kindle book they released years ago, Tender Wings of Desire. I haven't read it. But I have it.
Coming soon to a Netflix near you 😉

Yet another instance of learning of a seemingly great character only upon their passing 💔 2020 carries a theme, and Henri seems to have embodied it well.

Seems most promising.

Henri will be missed.

Also watched Tom Selleck in Jesse Stone: Stone Cold, a police drama. I thought it was good. Maybe I'll read the book. I believe there's a series of these movies, 9 of them made by cbs originally.
